Blizzard didn’t have much problem last year when the PC Singleplayer and non-MMO industry boomed with the release of Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3. Hellgate London, The game that promised to satiate the fans who have been waiting for Blizzard to develop or at least announce Diablo 3 fell short of the fan’s expectations. But this year, the competition for the king of MMORPG is tight. Age of Conan, boasting lush 3d environments and hi resolution textures (and nudity as a bonus) promises hardcore PvP fans gory PvP - and Warhammer Age of Reckoning… that… well looks a lot like WoW, but those who are played it and were there during the hands-on events swear that it is better than WoW and looks better than WoW.
Definitely, these 2 MMO’s will boast breathtaking sceneries and babes with more polygons but it seems that Blizzard ain’t giving up on it’s graphics department just yet. WoW is getting a Graphics overhaul in it’s next Expansion, “World of Warcraft : Wrath of The Lich King” which is now tested by Blizzard employee’s closest friends and relative… and soon PTR
Eurogamer: Do you think WOW is ever going to need a complete overhaul of the engine?
JA Brack : That’s actually something we talk about every expansion. It’s interesting, two games have really tried that before, Ultima Online tried it and EverQuest tried it as well, and in each case it was only somewhat successful. In each case a lot of people continued to play with the original client, because it was faster, or they preferred it, or were just used to it or whatever. And so for me as a game developer, the idea that we would spend so much time and energy on something and have people go, “meh, that’s not really for me,” that’s not very exciting. So I don’t think there’s really a clear model as to how to do that successfully. The model we have with Wrath of the Lich King allows people with high-end machines some additional graphical effects, and then we’ll have some kind of fallback for the people who don’t. Will we need a graphical update from the ground up at some point? Yep, probably. And I’m positive we’ll talk about it next expansion.”
World of Warcraft, as it is, may be sort of lacking in model texture quality and omg-bloom-effects but though at present it lacks in the graphics aspect of the game, it sure is very playable. When you are playing in PvP BG and you look at the battlefield.. doesnt matter if you’re at a tower or someplace high, you can still tell what’s going on. You can recognize what spells we’re being casted, when you are getting hit or when people around you are dying. Im not saying that Age of Conan and Warhammer’s MMO isn’t like that but it’s basically what an MMO end-game should be graphics wise. Graphics should be supportive of gameplay and im sure that the makers of AoC and Warhammer MMO know this. Anyway, it doesn’t really matter who gets the MMO crown. In these kind of situations, the consumers are always the winners.
