First of all, make sure that you’ve patched Fallout 3 to the latest version. You can download the latest patch here : (open in new window/ tab so you wont leave this guide/page) Download Fallout 3 1.1 patch (v1.1.0.35) / Fallout 3 changelog
Problem #1 : Fallout 3 crashing / Fallout 3 crash to desktop (ctd) | Fallout 3 crashing at the start of the game
Solution : (from Bethesda website)
1. Click Start
2. Click “All Programs” (or just Programs, depending on the version of Windows, whether they’re using “classic,” etc.)
3. Go to the ffdshow folder.
4. Click “Audio decoder configuration.”
5. In the left hand pane, click “Info & debug.” This is the second entry in the list.
6. In the right hand pane, near the bottom, find a check box labelled “Don’t use ffdshow in:”
7. Check that box, and in the text box underneath (it lights up when you check the check box), add “fallout3.exe” (don’t include the quotes). If there is already something in that box, put a semi-colon ( ; ) after what’s already there, and fallout3.exe after that. Do NOT use spaces, since ffdshow will think that’s part of the filename. A valid entry would be “explorer.exe;fallout3.exe” (without quotes).
8. Finally, click “Ok” and start Fallout 3.
Problem #2 : Fallout 3 Freezing randomly in the game, sometimes permanently.
Solution : Try the solution listed above for problem #1
Problem #3 : Fallout 3 freezing when taking the goat (PS3)

For the Fallout 3 GOAT freeze workaround: make a save, quit to the main menu and reload the save. The game should resume normally
Problem #4 : Fallout 3 installation errors (PC)
Solution :
Problem #5 : VATS inaccessible. R2 not opening up VATS menu (PS3)

The Fallout 3 may not be able to recognize the Dualshock 3 controller (DS3). Disable the DS3 and enable the classic 6-axis controller. Turn them off again and re-enable the Dual Shock 3 and the controls should work properly

im getting “Fallout 3 has stopped working” errors all over the place, from startup and when I’m lucky enough to get it working I will come across that error again before i get out of the Vault (since I always tend forget to save). Hope that it’s not my system that’s causing the problem because my other weaker PC is running the game pretty well.

I am doing the mission to find the galaxy radio plaza. And i’m running down a street and then all of a sudden it freezes. I’ve turned it off and on 5 times and i’ve waited 8 hours between one of them! help how do i fix it?
uh, ffdshow? should I have that?
At the title screen, both “Continue” and “Load” are greyed out. Checked the saved games folder and see saved game files. Anyone eles having this problem or have an idea how to fix it?
My radio trough pip boy is popping when msuic sounds, but when speak its not, and when i alt+Tab it works normally, in game just freaks me and my speakers. Please help, im not only one, alot of people i saw have it, but none rational way to fix it ;( (pc version)

After restarting the game and creating a new character, a CTD occurs right where you start at 1 year of age. As soon as you attempt to walk over to daddy or anywhere in the room, an error screen occurs as well as crash to desktop.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, applied the audio fix, but same CTD.

Keep getting this crash on startup, can’t even get into the game. Works fine on my Core 2 Duo Desktop with an 8800GTX, but on my laptop that has an X1100 xpress chip (slow) I can’t even get into the game, Both computers are vista 32bit. I tried the ffdshow fix, and disabling sound, different configurations through the luancher ect.

“I have an ASUS 8800GT video card and was experiencing the CTD on New Game bug like so many others here. Also, like so many others, I tried all of the various solutions others posted (clean boots, codec updates, ect.) and had no success getting the game to start. I was quite frustrated and a very sad panda.
During the course of my own trouble shooting routine, I discovered that the game would load and run properly after the ASUS Smart Doctor and GamerOSD applications were uninstalled.
While it’s not an perfect solution, I do hope it helps some of you running what is turning out to be a fun game.”

Upon opening V.A.T.S. my computer sometimes shuts off completely. It only happens with fallout 3 when opening v.a.t.s.
Trying to instal Fallout on my xp desktop and im getting a CRC Error saything that maybe a file is corrupt but i just bought the game today. Havent installed on any other computers either. Thanks for help.
@ cromag723: I had the same problem when I created a ‘Live’ account after starting a new game. Just log out of Live and that should do it.
I played the game a decent amount of time yesterday, several hours, but now the last autosave crashes the game in the load screen. Previous saves work fine.

It appears the Asus Xonar software will cause the crash on game start bug - if you turn off the DS3D GX mode it works fine.
Those of you guys who are getting the Fallout 3 unwarranted securom emulation error like this one :

In case you encounter this error during launching the installation of “Fallout 3″ please run the setup.exe manually from the disc.
And i thought Fallout 3 won’t come out with securom or any other DRM shit!!!!

Add me to the list of people getting random crashes to desktop during gameplay. I was fine in the vault, but now that I’m outside it crashes randomly after a few minutes. Sometimes it takes out my video card as well, so I have to do a reset. This makes me think it’s a video driver issue but who the heck knows. Do these guys test anything? Why do RPGs in particular have to be so buggy? The whole Fallout series has been so full of bugs it’s hard to believe.
hey, i just started the game, bought it yesterday, ive played through the baby stages, passed the goat, and now the part where Amata wakes you up frantic, where you have to escape, well i leave that room, where the roaches attack the one guard, and it always freezes there, no exceptions.
It is a regular error, saying fallout 3 has ncountered a problem, sorry for your inconcenience.
I’ve tried reloading over and over again, but it keeps freezing and that same part.
I have not tried to reinstall it yet, and i have a asus ATI EAH4850 HDMI graphics card, i know many of you fixed the problem by turning something off with ASUS, but i am not so savy with 3d cards.
If someone could help me i would really apreciate it.
Updated my video drivers, shut down everything else, did the ffdshow change, nothing helps. CTD after a few minutes of playing, usually at a transition, like coming out of inventory. Game is unplayable.
i agree jr, i just set everything low and turned anti-analising and anistropic filter off, and it still froze on that same spot. I have the latest drivers, i am just at a loss, paid 60 bucks for the game, and also got the 30 dollar prima guide with it, i am very disapointed.
My fallout 3 freezes every couple of minutes for maybe 5 seconds… It doesnt CTD like all the others here but its reall really anoying…
Tried the FFDshow thing… doesnt help…
Its playable and its seems to be an awsome game…

henry, that is strange, ive been on the gamespot forums and this forum the last couple of days about the fallout 3 problems everyone seems to be having, and i have not come accross the problem you seem to be having, it just Freezes for 5 seconds??
very strange, di you try lowering the graphics, like turning of anistropic filter and anti anilizing off?
well, my problem is continuing, i am going to try making a new character, perhaps it was just a glitch in the first character i made.
The thing is it somethimes run smoothly for 15 minutes and then freezes for maybe 5-10 seconds. My framerates are good. then it just freezes but if someone is talking to me the audio goes on and just the pic freezes and then it just goes on… It just happens randomly and its really anoying…
found some poeple having the same issues… at least… Most of them seem to 8800 cards…

didnt know i even had it but since then everything seems to be fine…

Aaron, ffdshow is a program. If you have it installed it should be in your Start Menu-> Programs. If it isn’t there, that means you do not have it installed. You don’t need to install it and doing so will most likely not solve your problem. If you don’t have it installed, your problem is coming from somewhere else.
Non of all options to get it straight work.
DRM can’t be the prob. I run all other games like it should be.

Prorozz, I’m sorry, but I don’t understand your comment/question.
If you haven’t had problems with DRM before (in this case SecuROM), that does not have any bearing on having DRM issues now. The version of SecuROM is different from other ones so it may actually be the cause of it.
From what I’ve been reading up on, SecuROM only gives you an issue when starting the game (not starting a new game, just starting it in general). If that’s your issue, I’d recommend trying the fix in #20 above. If that’s not your issue, then it won’t help you.

Right now i uninstaled it, did a disk cleanup, and its defragging right now, wehen its done i wil reinstall and see what happens, hopefully it will work.
Fallout 3 continue to freeze after all… I try many solutions but nothing works. It still freezing only in the small ”interior”.
I got a 9600 GTS nVidia… I read a lot about this and many have nVdia too!

not sure if anyone else has ran into this yet, but I’ve had numerous issues with Fallout 3 on the PS3 besides the issue listed above when taking the G.O.A.T. I’ve had the sound stop working several times, can’t hear gunshots at all, no environmental sounds at all, have had the game completely freeze when entering into VATS combat a handful of times, have had the game ’stutter’ when running around in the out lands. The PS3 is basically new and runs all my other games just fine (Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Dead Space and all the ps2 games I play on it). No scratches at all on my Fallout disc.
I had originally had severe problems installing Fallout 3 on my rig. I have a Quad core with 4 mb memory and two NVIDIA 8800 GTX cards with Vista 32. The system would hang and need a cold reboot during the install. I managed to install the game without problem since I followed a Windows “Clean Boot Proceedure”. Now it playes without crash issue.
The first step is to run the msconfig in the start search box.
On the General Tab click Selective Startup, then uncheck “Load Startup Items” and uncheck “Microsoft Services”
Restart your computer and install the game by running the setup program directly from the disk.
After the install is complete then go back and reactivate the “Load Startup Items” and “Microsoft Services”
On my set uo the game has been played for more than three hours without issue.

Alex, I really have no idea on how to fix your issue. I’ve been reading up on it on the official forums and apparently a LOT of people are having the same problem. You didn’t post your system stats, but I’m going to assume you have an nVidia card of the 8800 line (seems to be the running trend). I would keep checking at the official forums and even sign up for a name to post your issue or even some suggestions if you end up finding any. Dengue, just like Alex’s issue, yours seems to be occurring quite often as well. It seems that if there are no NPC’s (non-player characters) in the indoor areas, the systems crash. Again, no solution seems to have been found, but I would recommend checking the official forum to see if anyone else has found anything.
Joel, the radeon 9600 graphics card is not officially supported by Fallout 3. The system requirements are:
1GB System RAM (XP)/ 2GB System RAM (Vista)
2.4 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 256MB RAM (NVIDIA 6800 or better/ATI X850 or better)
If you don’t have that setup, I would suggest getting one of the console versions (upgrading a computer would be more expensive then buying a $200 Xbox 360 and a $50 memory card).
vilezombie, from what I have read, the PS3 version has several issues. The one solution that has been posted is to turn off the messaging features of the PS3 (turn off friend notifications, etc.). Or sign out of PSN. That should help. If not, check out the official PS3 support forum. The forum is at: http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.php?showforum=38 They might have some good help there.
For anyone that has other issues, so far the solutions have been pretty simple for what has worked for people:
-”Disable” any codec packs (ffdshow or Vimeo).
-Turn off online notifications (PSN, GFWL, XBL) or connectivity
For anyone that is having issues with an nVidia 8800 series card, it seems to be a trend and Bethesda is most likely hard at work to release a patch as soon as possible.
The most important message I can give any of you is to check and post on the official forums for your particular system. Try and be constructive and help other people out. Feel free to post your issue, but don’t bitch, none of the issues was intentional, they’re already hard at work trying to fix the problems, and bitching won’t help any.

I’m trying to play the game. It installed fine but when i try to play it I get an error saying that its missing the xlive.dll. It also says that i should try reinstalling it to fix it but it doesn’t work. Can anyone help me please?
Thanks for the ffdshow trick, worked perfectly. Although in the newer versions Klite pack, It’s in the DIRECTSHOW control tab on the left, not Info & CPU

Hey, I know this is/was a common problem but even with the k-lite codec pack installed my game continues to just shut down the moment it tries to load after I click to start a new game.
Anyone have any suggestions?
I’ve been experiencing problems with installation (CRC error I presume - I’ve got Russian installation and I do not speak a word Russian) and turning ON HyperThreading technology (in BIOS) on my Intel processor seams to do the trick. I am now able to install game. Hope this helps to somebody.
I instaled and launched the game without problems, but after some 20 minutes the game froze, the screen corrupted and audio looping. I was forced to hard-reset.
If I try to play again every 5-10 minutes the game freeze and all I can do is hard-reset.
I don’t have ffdshow. My system is all updated and run pefectly every other game I have.

I have fixed my problem, i have been able to exit the vault iwthout any freezes, and so far things r running ssmmothly.
I uninstalled falout, then i ran a disk cleanup, then a dsk defragment, then i reinstalled it, created a new character, and walla, i highly recommend to everry who is having problems similar to mine(Just look at post 23) to do the things i have mentioned.
Steve, thnx for the input, and actually i have a ATI 4850, when your on the other forums steve, pass this info on to people with similar problems as mine, because after i did all this, its running smoothly with no crashes.
I do believe though for some of you, Bethesda is going to have to release a patch, and at the begining of the patch, it should beging with im sorry lol.

As long as you satisfy the minimum requirements, you shouldn’t need a new desktop. When you say crashing on start, do you mean as soon as you click play it crashes? Or as soon as you start a new game? The crashing at the start is a common problem and I’m sure you can find a solution to it.
Ya im having the same prob. crash on start up. my specs are more than enough to run it. however when i click play the screen flicks black like its trying to load then it errors out and i get the unhandled error (0xf0000005. ive tryed in windowed, tryed the fddshow/k-lite fix, and ive tryed reinstalling and defraging. nothing.
Everyone who is getting error messages randomley or on an exact spot in the game, i highly recomend uninstalling it, do a disk cleanup, then defrage your hardrives, then reinstall it, create a new characer, and do not change the default key tilll you r out of the vualt.
Many issues i have been seeing were related to the keymapping, many people changed the keys to default durig the tutorial(The Vault) and the error messages went away.
Also many people have defragged their comps, and some people it also helped, so before coming to any conclusions, like memory leak problem or codec problem, please try what i did, it worked for me.
@ 59, i am sure bethesda had many issues they nneed to fix in a patch, be patient, i know it is a bummer not being able to play, hell i had to wait a couple days until i could with ease, but i am sure that they will releae a patch soon, just too many people with too many problems, ranging from CTD’s to the secrom bullcrap.
i bought the game over steam. i start the game and as soon as i get to the startup movie the game crashes. the message says Fallout 3 has encountered a problem and needs to close. there isnt an error number or anything. my age of empires 3 has the same problem. though aoe3 started having the problem after i updated the game using a windows vista compatiblity stand alone patch. hope yall can help
I have had the same issues as most PC gamers with fallout 3.
I try to start a new game ..it starts to load then… Crash. Until late last night I never even got to peek at the game.
Anyways my solution is far from great but it might put someone on the right track to really fix this problem.
I had to completely uninstall my sound card drivers and then the game loaded no problem. Tested older drivers for my sound card but no luck up to now. SO for me it’s fallout3 with o sound or not at all.
Sound card is an Asus Xonar D2X
The rest of the system specs…well not sure if it’s really necessary cause this bug seems to affect people with a wide variety of setups.
I will say that I am running an SLI setup.
i tried the ffd show codec thing and it worked for me, im going to try it on aoe3 aswell. im as giddy as a school girl right now, thanks so much

another solution to the freezing can be turning off AA, read it somewhere and it worked for me, no more vats problem.
I had the “new game start crashing problem”. I tried the K-lite codecs and the ffdshow trick, but it didn’t work. I read something interesting. Someone who can play with the game, downloaded the ASUS OSD, it came with his driver package and after he updated, he couldn’t run the game at all. After I read it, I uninstalled my ASUS gamer OSD and I can start a new game. So if you have the ASUS OSD software installed, try to remove it, maybe it is your problem too.

Crashes after installation. DirectX 9.0C, Windows XP, 1Gb RAM, 3.0 GHz, ATI Radeon 9550. Message is “Failed to initialize renderer”. Please help.
sorry about not explaining more clear, AA is Anti Aliasing, start Falloutlauncher.exe and go to options, and set Anti Aliasing to 0. this allowed me from continueing a savegame with locked up vats. Also, for people who cant even run fallout3.exe try starting fallout through falloutlauncher.exe as well, this is another thing I found out which worked for me.
I was having a problem with my game freezing up randomly. I tried everything and nothing worked. I tried running it in a window (after reading that as a possible fix in an oblivion forum), and it worked!
I did a clean install of the game. At first it would simply crash when trying to start in a variety of configurations ranging from compatibility changes to graphics changes etc. Then after a reinstall it the program no longer crashed, it hung and froze during start up and had to be ended with task manager. I have not found any way to fix it at all. The game does not even get past the black screen on launch. It simply craps out by a crash or freeze.
Errors seem to be happening to everyone in every way. Every different Video Card, Sound Card, OS, Service Pack, RAM, CPU, everyone is crashing for one reason or another. My guess is that the problem is there is something all of these errors ranging from securerom to live to sound drivers to video codecs etc must have a common problem communicating with the game.
Short of Bethesda releasing a patch, unless you find your individual issue, you are not going to fix it. Even if you do find your issue. Everyone’s issue seems to vary. If you are looking for the magic bullet. I suggest you stop and just play something else until an official patch is released. That is what I plan to do. No point working myself up over it. I will just have to pretend it came out a week later or something to that effect.
If you continue and find what works for you, great. I just don’t recommend the stress over the game. Even people on consoles are having problems. This is another case of, trying to hit the release date ASAP and not making sure the game is ready for release… It happens a lot. Don’t expect it to go away any time soon. Just pretend the game is not out yet. Good luck all.
My crashing problem was fixed by running in windowed mode. Tried everything else suggested here, including playing around with detail settings and nothing else worked. I’m able to run now at max detail with the radio on and everything is smooth as silk - no crashes.

I installed the game, medium settings recommended on first play (i’ll take what i can) played thru the vault, went out into the wild, Megaton everything fine for 3 hours of game play. I went to bed happy…
Next day i load up my saved game and a few minutes into it, my computer just reboots, no warnings. This occurs every time i go into the game. I’ve been told it may be processor temp problems but i’m playing other games at full graphics no problem.
I unsintalled it, did a checkdisk, defrag, reinstalled everything. The reboot occurs before the end of the birth sequence where u choose ur character’s appearance and all.
I’m using the french version (so it may be related to that particular version).
Any insights?? Why did it work for the first three hours smoothly and then started crashing?

Best fix I’ve found so far is WINDOWED MODE.
On my PC the game lags to the point where it is unplayable.
It’s apparently a problem with multi core processors but I get no lag at all if I play windowed.

Just wait for the patch and in the meanwhile if youre really inpatient (like me) try playing it in windowed mode works fine for me only crashes while shutting down the game intentionally, it the only this i can thik of working so far.
Have re-installed, diabled this and that, updated drivers, changed to Windows 2000 compatability, and run in windowed mode.
Only running on a P4 2.8, Radeon 9800 XT.
Oblivion runs fine.

properties on fallout3.exe, play in 640×480 256collours.
the game will run, and later you can change the ressolution and stuff.
I suffered from randomly freezing too and for me (as far as I can tell - few hours of gameplay) worked to turn off the anti aliasing. That is the only thing which help for me.

Unfortunately for you Fallout does not officially support your video card. Even though Oblivion runs fine, this is not the same engine. The basis is the same, but modifications have been made to this one.

Chances are you’re going to have a very tough time getting this to run without a video card upgrade.

Is there a particular reason you’re using the French version? Because that’s kind of a unique situation, the fix to your issue may not be something a person here can help you with. I would check with French sites to see if any of them can help you.

The reason i am using the french version is because i am french and live in france and so bought the french version…
I’ve been looking on french sites for answers as well and it seems the original english version is as bugged as the french one or vice versa.
Since i installed fallout 3 i have noticed another problem : ALL MY OLDER GAMES CRASH FIVE MINUTES IN !!!!! (obivion, splintercell, Farcry the first one!!)
Is it possible installing fallout has modified software to the point where older perfectly working games at full detail now crash and reboot my computer???

Everyone, this is what’s working for me as of now: re-map your control keys to its respective defaults.
Seems when I play the game minimizes on my desktop and after a few attempts at maximizing it it’ll return , but only play for a few minutes before minimizing again.
Why do these companies push out games that aren’t ready, and most of the times the only people suffering are the ones with the PC versions?

That sounds like another new issue that I haven’t heard of. I would recommend going to the official forum and checking there for solutions. If no one has that issue, I’d recommend creating a new post to see if anyone else knows what to do. In terms of “incomplete” games, you have to consider that with consoles, every system is identical, so a game designed for one of them will work the same on any of them. However, because PC users have vastly different configurations (in terms of hardware and software), it is very difficult to create a game that works perfectly on every system. In this particular case, even the console versions are having issues, so it’s not limited to just the PC. I’m sure Bethesda is doing their best to get out a fix for all the issues that have come up.

On the screen launcher, you have the option “windowed” i suppose.
I fixed the problem where I crash whenever I go near Megaton by using windows mode, low settings for everything, updated video card, and some other stuff==. However, I have a new problem, I crash whenever I attack enemies by using VAC (or whatever, you know the bit where you choose where you want to shoot by pressing V, takes up AP), if anyone knows how to fix this, please tell me.
Also, to those that want to know how to get to windows mode, you just press auto play, in that pop-up that says start game, options, data files etc, press options, look down, you will see “mode”, underneath that, theres a box for “windowed”, click that.
from the gist im getting off the Bethesda forums alot of these problems are being cause by missing or corrupted shader files in the data/shaders folder. someone from a Russian site suggested copying shader 002 and renaming it to the missing shader. in my case was 008 and it finally let me get to the main menu. however it crashes for me after a brief loading period when i click new game.
~this fix is for the people who were crashing as soon as they on the launcher clicked play. it may or maynot fix the eintire issue just get you further in.
Necodominus - i can confirm that same fix worked for me, to the same degree. I had 005 and 008 missing, copying 002 to both of those got the game showing the menu (was just crashing on startup before) - but now crashes on new game.
Switching to windowed mode just makes it crash faster. None of the compatibility mode fixes work. Have removed ffdshow outright, no difference. Not using any funny asus soundcard drivers or control panels. Not using an nvidia card. Not using Core architecture processor or anything that supports hyperthreading. No overclocking, system is otherwise stable. Game controls are set to defaults. AA and all fancy effects turned off. All redistributables on the cd installed properly. Any further ideas?

Whenever I play, I randomly lose all control of my character. My keyboard and mouse do not work, yet the game KEEPS ON PLAYING. Yep, thats right, the game keeps on playing. I even have everything running on low, and yet it still randomly locks up like this. Like i said, I lose control over the game yet its still running…basically meaning I watch myself die as I lose all control and must ctrl alt delete to get out.
Fallout 3 crashes alot when im outside…almost uplayable. In that Megaton city he doesnt crash that much but in the outside area it’s really every 3-5 min….kinda sucks..

Alot of crashes start when using that V.A.T.S thing or when enemies approach…I tried alot things to fix it but this isnt rreally my job I think Bethesda should get their sh!t togheter before publishing this game.
I’m experiencing random freezes.Sometimes it freezes in same place in just few seconds difference from entering it. Uninstalled codecs, winamp, no vain. I have a temporary solution for my issue:put to 0 antialiasing and antistophic. This enables to pass the freezing moments/areas.

I’m having a problem after I select a new game. I select new game and it then plays a intro movie after it finishes it restarts. Is this similar to when you others are saying New Game crash?

I thought that I have a problem with the crashes and it turns out that I’m the lucky one! I fixed great deal of crashes with disableing ffdshow but still frezzes when I push F9 (quickload) and leaving Megaton, so I’m traying to avoid that! BTW game is worth waiting for past 10 years!!!
I installed K-Lite codecs which overwrited the olde onse, then I disabled Audio ffdshow in the K-lite folder just like it’s described above.
So maybe K-lite codecs do the trick! Try that!
Everybody who is ever watched films on his comp. must have some kind of codec on.
BTW whoever thinks that his conf. is too weak, he is wrong. My (AMD Athlon64 3800, Nvidia 6600GT, 3GB of RAM, Windows XP)works just fine.
I didn’t have a single mishap with the XBOX 360 albeit, a few freezes here and there until I got to rivet city, and my game started freezing every 30sec - 1 min, and then finally stopped loading my game. 40HOURS!!

New xp install on my older pc worked. Using an x1600 graphic card with only the driver installed. I have to run in windowed mode or it will crash. This game is buggy, probably some sort of memory leak/memory swap/video compatibility. Too bad it is fun when it works. I agree it would be VERY, VERY FUN without all the hassles to get it to work. Seem like they tested on a very limited setup as some people have no problems.

I have played the game without any problems whatsoever up to nearly lvl 20,the only “bug” I was getting (like someone else mentioned,sorry cba to scroll back up and find his name)was the odd 5-10 sec freeze and then the game woudl resume normally.However as of today i got my first CtD,and continued to get CtDs every 5 mins.
After disabling ffdshow I am now getting CtDs every hour or so.
It seems to be completely random.
Having played this game for a good 40 hours before my first CtD without any problems except 5-10sec freezes with ffdshow enabled I really dont know what to say.
Nothing has changed hardware or software wise in my pc,which is fairly old.Single-core athlon cpu,1gb ram,radeon x1950 gfx.
I will try the windowed mode method,hopefully it will work.

I have downlaoded the game from direct2drive.com sucesfully but i cannot install the game from there. I get a 6006 error code message. I am running on an gateway fx series gaming machine with 32 bit vista.

akerry, if you could elaborate on the 6006 error code message (such as perhaps giving us the exact error message), we may be able to help you. I would highly recommend the direct2drive support page since your error may be something specific to direct2drive and since you bought it there, you are entitled to support from the support staff there.

I heard they are working on a patch thats comming out this week. The patch is made against the crashes but I really wonder if it’s gonna work……………….I wanna play now!

Here are some tips on how to be “better at computers” for you;
1. Read the posts like everyone else, and you will know as much as we do… that question has been asked and answered about 100 times already.
2. Don’t ever post DXdiag results again like that… your one post now takes up the same amount of room as everyone else posts combined, and nobody here will understand what it means apart from (maybe) about 2 people I can think of.
I have an issue with save game corruption.
I play the game just fine, occasionally I will crash going out a door after a loading screen, but only to desktop. I can then load up the game and carry on from my last save.
However, the strange thing is, after I shut down my pc for the night, the next day I will not be able to load from my saved games. Anytime I try, it will freeze my whole system up and I have to hit the reset button. I can start a new game just fine, save that new game, close the game, load that game. But if I shut down my computer, the same problems occurs again. I’ve tested this four times now and I am certain it is a save game issue.
Any ideas? Is there a way to read saved game files somehow? Maybe there’d be a clue in there if I looked at pre-shut down save and post-shut down save.

From what I have been reading over the last couple of days, there are a lot of people with similar problems as yourself. There doesn’t appear to be much insight into your specific issue though, so unfortunately you may have to wait for this “magical patch” that has been announced by Bethesda. Looks like my friends are in the same boat though, with random crashing and no way to fix it that we have found.

Skinz, I don’t think SoldjahBoy meant to be offensive, he actually meant that there are several possible solutions already listed here on this page and that although your diagnostic can be helpful to those that understand it, most of us on this thread don’t have too much more experience then you do. Do you know what error you get when you crash at start up? By that I mean, is there any kind of error message? Does your game crash and send you back to the desktop? Or does your whole computer crash? This information is more useful then the long diagnostic file that you included earlier.
In terms of what you can do, there’s a few things I would recommend:
-I would recommend checking to see if you have any Asus software installed (you can check to see this by going into your Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel). If you do, I’d recommend uninstalling it.
-Also, your diagnostic shows you using Windows XP Service Pack 2. I would highly recommend installing the newest Service Pack through Windows Update.
-Another thing I noticed was that you have an ATI Radeon 9550/ X1050 Series. This video card is NOT supported by the game and “There are no plans to include it in future updates.” Asher above has the same issue as you do and it’s highly likely that your video card is giving you the problems that are occurring.
-Having looked further in your diagnostic file, I honestly don’t think your computer is powerful enough to run the game. The video card needs to be upgraded as I stated before. Your processor also needs to be upgraded as it’s just underneath the minimum requirements for the game.
Your page file also seems to be high for the amount of total space you have. What this means is that you probably have many things installed on your computer and have many things running at one time (this is not the only cause however, so I apologize if it’s not the case). To remedy this, remove old software you don’t use anymore and turn off all the programs you have before you begin playing the game. I would also recommend doing a defrag of your hard drive if you haven’t already (check this if you don’t know how: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848). This will likely take several hours to complete.
-The last thing you need to do is to update your drivers. To update your video driver, go to http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html and select the appropriate video card, download the suite (you don’t need to download both files) and install it. You have a strange audio card, so I really can’t tell you where to get the new drivers from. I would recommend checking the computer manufacturer website (if you have a Dell, go to Dell’s website to find the newest drivers for your audio card).
With all of those things done, your computer should run better and hopefully the game will work. However, I cannot make any promises because of the lack of support for your video card and you being just under the minimum system requirements. If all of that doesn’t work, there are a few options you have. The first option is to buy a new video card. However, this still may not allow you to play the game because the rest of the system may not be enough to run it. However, this is the cheapest option. Another option you have is to buy a brand new computer. If you go this route, I’d highly recommend you get one that meets the recommended system requirements (not just the minimum requirements) because this will also allow you to play other brand new games as well. This will be the priciest option for you. Another option is to return the PC version of the game, go out and get a video game console (Xbox 360 or PS3) and play the game on one of those systems. With the holiday coming up, there should be some good deals in getting a system.
Lastly, if you don’t want to spend any money at all, you can wait for the patch to arrive (it should be within the next few days) and hope that it will support your video card.
Hopefully I’ve given you enough help to get your system running the game. There are also several other solutions in the posts above that hopefully will help if my information didn’t. If anything I’ve said offended you, I did not mean it as such, I am trying to be as objective as possible and provide you with assistance. Hopefully it does work and you can enjoy the game!

If you could at least take the time to review existing questions and answers you might find that your question had already been asked and the answer to your question was basically “nothing can really be done about stat up crashes, wait for the patch”.

I can see that there are a lot of diffrent problems with this game, however, none of the stated fits mine. :/
I installed the game yesterday and everything ran smothly.
However, when i restarted the game several hours later, it shows the beloved “Fallout 3 has encounterd an error and must be closed”-message…
I read through this site and none of the stated solutions worked to make the game run as before.
HOWEVER…
I set the game to run in windowed mode, and then i can see the background animation before the main menu appears. But i can’t see the text, use any menu alternatives, and i dont hear the click-click sound (hear the music anyway… :S)

hi!!! my problem is that the game crushes when i push the play button on the launcher. the game crushes telling my fallout3 exe needs tou shut down etc… the exception that is displayed in the info is similar to others here, i just downloaded the pach and still no good.

steve, if the ffdshow “fix” isn’t helping, I would suggest trying one of the many other solutions listed on here. I also believe that the rest of your comments are also covered here on this forum. As for getting for the 360, it also has issues (none of the games are issue free) and Bethesda is working hard to get everything fixed. If none of the solutions fix your issue, let us know more details about it and we’ll do our best to help you.

I found a solution to my problem.
Now, f****g excuse my english, but…
-Go to your Fallout 3 folder. (Default is %systemroot%\Program\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\
-Right-click at Fallout 3.exe, select Properties.
-Got to the Compability-fold.
-Check the “Deactivate visual themes” box. (The box is checked when a checkmark is present.)
-Run Fallout 3 launcher, set your preferred graphics.
-Enjoy the game!
Note: I’m running Windows XP SP2.
Note 2: I coulden’t get the english details in describing somw Windows elements. Sorry for this. Hope you get it worki’n anyway. ^^

I HAVE A SOLUTION!!!
I have been having the same problems, crashing every 2-3 minutes. I installed the patch, however I had a no-cd crack on (because I hate cds), and it half patched the game. I still have the constant crashes, but I found that if i ran the game in windowed mode, when the “Lallout 3 has encountered a problem” error reporting window pops up, you can just drag the window off screen, and continue playing! I don’t know if it was the patch, or just this method, but I highly recommend you try it. I am running mostly max graphics, except 8xAF, 2xAA, windowed 1440*900, on x1900xt 8.10 ati drivers with hotfix. Hope this works as a temporary solution until a full patch is released.

I applied the 1.0.0.15 patch and it did NOT help my random crashing problem when in non-windowed mode. So, back to windowed mode and as before it works fine.
Fallout 3 stops working after I double click the fallout 3 launcher.
Here FO3 is given a blue screen of death after intro (sometimes you can play 1minutes.(no .dll, but 000000×7F orso) and PC is stable (memtest/cpu_test/Vidcart tests all fine)
Kepmapping was my problem, Same crash spot everytime, once u meet the first guard on leavin your appartment as the leave vault starts. Keymapping was causin the crash after extensive testing.

i have a real SOLUTION for permanent CRASHES.
I tried all this Codec-, Configuration and tunrning off AA stuff - none worked, still crashed every 5 minutes or so. Patch released on November 6 is installed.
However, if i run the game in WINDOWED MODE it works perfectly.
XP SP 3, Athlon X2 6000, Geforce 9800GT.
Alright I’ve been grappling with the crashes for a week or so now, and here’s what I’ve come up with.
Disabled audio and video decoders of ffdshow
Uninstalled and reinstalled the game, and all my video and audio drivers
Tried super-low video settings, disabling sound.
Have currently installed 178.24 nvidia drivers on a 9600gt
I’m using a usb audio device (portable speakers), but experienced same problems with my onboard audio.

Didn’t crash once til I entered the wasteland, now crash evey 30 seconds or so. When the game boots up I hear some kind of beeps crossed with a sucking sound. These are my cause of crashing. I went to my pip-boy by pressing tab, went to data, and clicked the radio, my sounds stopped and radio turns on, shut off radio, sounds start again.
-The solution for me:
When you enter the game, turn on the radio. The game works just fine. It crashes after about 45 seconds if the radio isn’t turned on. Wierd huh? If the static drives you crazy, turn the radio down in settings… Hope this helps someone other than me!!!! GL you fallouts gamerz
Ahh one more thing, now set my graphics up to high, and have no problems as long as the radio is on.

TIM - If you can’t find it in your “all programs” tab, or via a full computer search, you don’t have it. So your problem is just fallout.
this application failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. reinstalling the application may fix the problem………..this is what i get when i try to install this game on my systen i have a core 2, 2 gigs of ram, a 7600gt nvidia video card. i had it installed once, but i had to format my hard drive. after loading windows, getting all the updates i get nothing its like my disk drive is reading it wrong……. but ive installed other games with no problem……… this game freakin rocks! i wanna play!!!!!!!!!!!

the game didn’t freeze or crash at these settings, so, I thought maybe someone should try it if their game freezes every 20-30 seconds.
For me, the problem was audio — upgraded my RealTek HD audio to the latest version and the crashes stopped. So give that a shot if all else fails.

I’ve had my share of freezing with fo3 so I kept trying like a good little pirate. My solution was the following:
1, I installed Reloaded’s version of the cracked game
2, I cracked the executables(with the russian launcher, I’m sure you guys’ve experienced that the cracked launcher is in russian)
3, I mounted the following v1.0 no-dvd crack’s .mds file with daemon tools:

4, I played the game! No crashing so far, only on exit, but that didn’t harm my saves/progress/character (so far, again), so I guess I’m quite happy about it:) Can’t believe I was actually going to buy a fucking buggy game, I bet this wasn’t copy protection to the extreme, learning from oblivion’s well shown example.
Oh, the only bug I DID notice was that when I wanted to change my face with the robot in my megaton house, the face window was empty but I can live with that lol. As I said, no crashes so far!

If you had, or have Arc Soft Media installed, go to services and disable. Then find the file ASAUDIO.AX (probably in Program Files/Common Folder/ARCsoft and rename this file. I used “BACKUP_ASAUDIO.ax”. Double check that MPEG audio files will still play in media player. If so you will be good to go.

there is no such file as fddshow at all in my entire drive… or actually any of the files non existant… help…
I reinstall the game about 10 times, but can’t install the fix and the 1.0.15. patch neither. The patch sad: can’t find older file. Find a file with the same name, but it isn’t the older file.(yes, I try the same US/UK patch version witch is my game)
So, i can’ patch the game, and can’t run the fix too.
New problem:
I format my c:\, reinstall windows, install only VGA and sound card drivers. When I try to run the game, I only see a black screen, nothings happening. I wait about 10 mins, but nothing.
Can I play this game in my life? Or I have to wait for my next life?

Removing Vodei works for my problem.
My fallout 3 was working great when i first got it, i could play for hours with no problem. But when i get up to the part when your in that virtual world place it froze all the time, so i created a new char and its freezing all the time now anyway. Not freezing at specific points, just randomly, i was having fun to.
game doesn’t react anymore after the birth, I choose the gender and conversation between mom and dad stops after first sentence. it doesn’t freeze but nothing happens. all you can do is cry (virtually and for real)!!

The official patch worked for me after hours of fucking about with setting left right and centre…
Mine seemed to evolve around the radio, my crashes must have had soemthing to do with the radio, or sometimes when I just wandered about.
ANyway, I have the 2 patches zipped up here in a file if anyone wants them…

No skullptra fix, no patch, nothing at all. And I played 8 hours without crashing!
Simple rules: After restarting PC, shut off ALL minor important applications like ICQ, MSN and don’t open a browser! Simply start f3 and play… at least this is my solution for my problems!

In my case the game kept on freezing randomly with slight tendency to freeze in dusty indoors. By freezing I mean that the video froze, the sound kept on playing and I had to kill Fallout 3 process from Windows. I was getting desperate as I tryed EVERY fucking thing that had appeared on the net since the moment of release. As I have ATI HD4800 series with the latest drivers installed I didn’t expect that to be an issue. And all I had to do was to Exit the Catalyst Control Center which was running on the background. Now I’m going to play my ass off!
OK, so it didn’t really fix it, after few minutes of playing it does it again… sorry…
kajsd, i expierienced the same. solvation was to restart computer, and dont run ANY apps before launching fallout 3. by any i mean any, nothing at all! no browser, simply nothing!

i can start games just fine i can go on for a damn while without bugs….
Yet if i use teleport to a location ive seen or i load a game save it crash with no errors back to desktop so i have to start again.
Out of 16 saves only one work near river city the others just kick back outside the game.
the 1.0.0.15 fallout 3 patch significantly decreased the crash frequency. Those of you reporting crashes tried them yet
found a great solution, I tried the idea of having no paging file, the game ran fine for a while but windows crashed because there was no virtual memory. I tried turning off the ffdshow codecs for fallout 3. finally I turned the radio volume right down patched the game and went into the windows system configuration utility program and stopped anything from loading when windows starts have’nt had a problem since.
oh remember try not to have anything running in the background internet explorer, download programs whatever it seems fallout 3 is highly sensitive to other programs running I managed to have it running not a single crash last night while using this procedure. been working on a solution since I got the game, in New Zealand we pay &94.99 for the average copy and yet our currency is strong, I hate corporations. hope the game works for you guys, good luck.
kajsd, in my case I quit QIP and MSN, haven’t opened any browser and quit Google Desktop. Yeah, maybe there is some backround app that may be in conflict with f3. When I look how many process i got running when I want to play f3, it’s overall 38 processes. How many do you have? Maybe that’s one mistake
I have perhaps 31 processes with 2 non essential programs running whilst opening this website. I’ve had so far all up 14 hours of gameplay on fallout 3 with one crash. Still a remarkable improvement from having a crash every 5 minutes, My system specs are windows xp home edition sp3, 1.6 dual core, 1gb ram, nvidia 8600 512 ddr 3, realtek soundcard oh I forgot to mention that I turned the sample rate conversion rate from best to good as that has helped me with many other games in the past. onboard soundcards can be a bitch at times.

- I have managed to get the game stable on my PC, right click on fallout3.exe and set compat.mode for Windows 98 ME game has been fine since I made this change.
I have a fresh new OS… new computer… so I have only like 20 processes running, maybe? … but some of them are not originaly in Windows, I have something installed… Anyway I’m now trying to run the game under XP, I created a new partition and installed second OS… I’ll let you know how that worked for me.
OK, so the solution for me was to install another OS… XP… so far I have gone to as many dusty indoors as I could and no crash, that is a huge leap forward… thank you guys for help.

I just bought fall out 3 for my son, who will be coming back from Iraq. He has a new sony all in one computer blue ray dvd/cd and intergrated grafice card. when i install the game it loads up starts then “windows has encountered a problem, looking for solution” but nothing happens. Is it the graphics cards( video settings set to low) that keeps causing the problem? I am not tech savy like he is and the patch does not work at all. What can I do? he will be home mid march and his lack of space on the base is the reason for the all in one.
Mike, your best bet is to wait for the next patch that should come out in late november/early december from what ive heard. If that does not fix your problem, try either get a new video card…or just return the dam game

i downloaded this game from steam. when it finished downloading it installed but during installation it told me i needed to fix my net.framework for my windows xp so i said ok and it began to fix it but stopped in the middle of it and gave me the “send error report” error. so i said fuck it and tried playing the game anyways. the game starts fine but when i press play to you know play the game it crashes and gives me the same error report as above and tells me that fallout 3 has to close because of the problem. so idk if its because of that net.framework and if it is, does anyone know where i can fix it at and if not what i am i supposed to do?

this is exactly what happened with me will — November 22, 2008 .net failure during install. Anyone know how to reinstall through steam? Bethesda is useless. They asked me to run a diagnosis report then never replied. I was excited there for a moment until I realized that was just an auto reply and they really just want to sell as much of this broken game as possible before everyone realizes the PC version pretty much doesn’t work. I’m pretty mad I just gave the 50 bucks for nothing but a headache. On that same vein, anyone know if it is possible to return a broken game in steam? I’m probably going to end up just having the charge removed from my credit card, but I think Steam should know about this, maybe they’ll put pressure on bethesda.
this is the file that i get the error for “c58f_appcompat.txt” does the “appcompat” mean that an application i have isnt supported by this game? it might be my graphics card since i have a nvidia geforce5200 but im not sure if this game supports it or not. if it doesnt, does that mean that im fucked out of my 50 dollars and i have to buy a new graphics card to even play the game and if thats the case what graphics card should i buy that isnt ridiculously expensive?

Other crashes seem to be related to sound-issues (just at the moment when a radio-channel starts a tune) and I’m not about to deinstall other codecs. Other games behave flawless.

For those who have ffdshow problem, I suggest you install the k-lite all-in-1 codec pack and then follow the instructions of PROBLEM #1 mentioned above. Oh, make sure all your drivers(graphic, sound…) are up to date.
Ok i am having the same problem as 2 other people in this thread, kizo and someone else, and yes i read the entire thread to make sure no one has answered my question already. I run the game and hit new game. It goes through the opening animation and shows my character getting born. After i choose boy or girl my mother says her line and then nothing happens. The game just idols. It doesn’t crash and i can still hit “e” to make a crying noise but the game is just waits there and nothing happens. I can still hit escape and quit the game. i forgot to mention the quick launcher work i click play it goes black then the sound starts, but then comes up with a error about shutting down the program cause it is at risk, i turned of blocks and fire walls cant seem to fix it

YAY it took me about a days worth of work but i figured out my problem. For all who have this problem all you must do is when it goes into the idol mode, hit escape and go to options. go to the graphic options and start messing around with them. You don’t have to change any specific thing or even keep the changes but just move a couple sliders back and forth and you should be good to go. just resume the game and the game will continue
i have been getting random ctd’s at particular spots, such as at big town when crossing the bridge, the slavers area, upon leaving the area, & at the megaton bar when i try to talk to the guy in the suit / hat.
my computer is definatle more than capable of running this game, & none of the suggestions that are suggested on this page & many others work / apply for me.

i’m encountering slightly different issues.Played the game through for over sixty hours, not a single crash.Restarted and getting regular crashes, but completely random. Crashes all over, dosen’t matter where i am in the game world. Also getting odd visual affects, slight ghosting and random primary colour squares flashing. Defragged, removed old save games and did the ffdshow thing, still the same. Running a conroe 2.2 overclocked to 3.1 , an ati sapphire 4850 1024, dfi board, 2 gig dominator ram and xp pro.
Aa at x2 and af at x2.The only thing different really in the second game is the dog which is the next thing to go.
I haven’t had any issues with Securom, mainly because i bought the game and then used a fixed dvd exec so my son dont wreck the disc.
Regarding the 8800 issues, i have another machine that has my old 8800 in it and that runs fine.
If getting rid of the dog dont work its a reinstall.
I don´t speak a so werry good english, but i will try to explain my problem. Durin one quest, you ar supposed to escort dr. Lee (or what her name is) to the citadel (brotherhood of steels HQ) and after you have entered the citadel the task should be complited. The problem is, that i hawe been running around in the citadel for hours without that the task has been complited (dr. Lee is alsou in the citadel, walking around in the labs, and when you try to talk to her she only say that she is thinking on what our next move vill bee and then she walks away) Is there anything to do to fix this bug or should i just start to play throgh half the game agai, becorce i can`t compleate the main story becourse the game just say that my current mission is to escort dr. Lee to the citadel.
Ps. when i entered the citadel for the first time dr. Lee didn`t come with mee, instead she run away towords the opposit direction. But after 15min when i was about to exite the citadel the game “freezed” when i was about 8ft from the door( i was able to look arond and pause the game but not locking at the piip boy or moveing or shoot) Then dr. Lee come throu the door and valked straight to the labs. And I was continuasly unable to do anythin but look aroud. I tyred to ree-boot the computer many times but it allways ended up in the same way until i typed ENABLEPLAYERCONTROLS in the console and vas able to to move agen

i have a problem with the PC version of the game. The installation went fine the menu screen works fine but whenever i try to start a new game it looks like its loading (the little arrow thingy spins liek it should) but after about id say 5 seconds the screen goes black and the program stops responding so i have to close it using ctrl+alt+dlt!!! I have the newest driver’s, i have an 8800 GTX and i the same error happens with every different CD i try ( i tried 2 different ones) but i get the same annoying, game ruining error.

hey so it took me for ages to get mine working, to the point that i installed vista, i didnt have to and really it was simple.
if u installed the drivers for ur graphics card u should have a control panel for example mine was nvidia control panel.
on the first screen there is an option ” let the 3D application decide”, “use the advanced 3D image settings” and use my prefernce. i just changed mine to the second one from the first. and it runs smoothly hope it helps.
ok, ran wise registry cleaner, deleted every save bar the most current and sent the dog to vault 101. Aint crashed since.
Wondering if it might be something to do with telling the dog to wait at certain locations.

I am having the same problem as llamalord2212. When I press new game, it appears to be loading, and then the screen goes black and i have to ctrl+alt+del to close it. Anyone fixed this problem?
Edit: Just tried to load a save file that my friend gave me, still no luck. Anyone have any ideas?
Edit2: I found out using trial and error with InstalledCodec that it was the Viscomsoft MPEG2 Audio and Video Decoders that were making it not work.

llamalord, I did fix it. Download InstalledCodec and disable all of the codecs. If it works, enable half, etc till you find the problem codecs.
I think I have a fix for those of you who are using the Creative Soundblaster X-FI sound card.
When I bought the game a few days ago, I too had nothing but crashes. Mine happened at the birthday party everytime. I uninstalled the game, turned off my firewall (Zone Alarm Pro), and I went into the Creative Console Launcher under programs. When the launcher came up I unchecked 3D sound, and I uncheck the Crystalized box as well. I then reinstalled the game (no reboot) and the game worked like magic.
I tried the ffdshow route, I installed it and it didn’t work at all. I read a post about people using Asus Xonar, and unchecking the 3D sound box and it gave me an idea about the Creative X-FI.
I hope this works for some of you guys n gals out there.

If you cannot locate the folder, then more than likely the program is not installed on your computer. You may have to download it. There are links above that will direct you to the download.
FYI I finished the game with minimal crashing (every few hours) playing in windowed mode. I had hoped to have a patch to fix this problem before I finished…
Just to let you guys know from my earlier posting of the X-FI fix I found. I have been playing the game with no crashes at all in fullscreen mode. The only crash I get, (which doesnt bother me) is after I have turned the game off. I have not installed the patch, only because when I first installed the game, I also installed the patch before playing.
I will let you know if the patch causes any crashes for me.

Update: I am still running the game seamlessly. For me the fix was turning off 3D sound for my X-FI sound card. I do not have ffdshow installed on my system, nor am I running the codecs. The game runs very nicely.

My FO3 doesn’t progress any further in the starting storyline (during the babybirth)…
After I select the gender, I hear both parents excited & saying they have a healthy baby. And then the story don’t get any further, the masked man stunned there, but the background music cayyies on.
May I know what is this prob??

This a reply to DolphinuS and everyone else with a Processor speed of less than 2.4ghz.Minimum system requirements stated by Bethesda for FO3;
Windows XP/Vista
1 GB system ram (XP)/ 2 GB system ram (Vista)
2.4 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent
Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 256MB Ram(Nvidia 6800 or better/ATI X850 or better)
That being said, I have seen machines of lesser capabilities run FO3. The game is crashing on many systems that meet the specifications, mine too. Perhaps when Bethesda comes out with a patch that solves ALL of the problems with FO3, the game might play well on machines of lesser spec than called for BUT if my machine did not meet the requirements, I would not spend $50 just to find out.
After reading almost all (at least a couple hundred) of these posts I can not help but notice that no one is talking about what Bethesda Tech Support is telling them. I contacted customer support at the Bethesda site about my crashing problems and they got back to me in less than 24 hrs with a barrage of questions concerning my configuration and the nature of the crashing problem. I have been having other problems with my machine and brought it in for a full hardware checkup at the same time I contacted Bethesda thinking that I would have it back before Support addressed my questions. Bethesda got back to me first and I am still waiting for my machine.
The point of this posting is that Bethesda may not be aware of the full scope of the problems with FO3 because many people are just posting their complaints in forums instead of contacting customer support.
My answer to just about every question in this forum is another question. What did Bethesda Tech Support tell you?

i was installing fallout 3 by running bat file when it got 2% i restarted the pc ,now when i am installing bat file it asks to delete fallout 3 folder but i dint get in program file also , i repaired registry still bat file says delete folder and rerun

I got the error #1 immediatly, then, whenever I close the game, or sometimes at random, it gives the “stopped running” windows message, and also it crashed Windows one time only.

CTD: Installed F3: Vault was fine until I hit Wasteland 5 mins in… CTD. Happens in Windowed mode too. All my drivers are always up to date. So I tried FFDShow, uninstalling live 3.0, updated MS service packs, defragmented, uninstalled and reinstalled, lowered some graphics setting and ran fine in the School just outside the Vault…then 45mins later I went out into Wasteland *bam*CTD. I m so disappointed. $55 gone. I should have waited until the price dropped to at least $40.
My PC specs are fine and am right in the middle of Min and Optimum specs.

Here’s a problem I encountered and found solution for:
I played the game for like 10-15 minutes and then my computer restarts by itself (note: it’s not a shutdown it’s a REBOOT.)I started the game again and after 20 minutes it happened again and again and again…I have played the game for 6 hours straight in the past, but after I opened it recently it’s doing this all the time. So, I found a solution. Here it is:
1 From the desktop right-click on My Computer.
2 Click the Properties option.
3 In the System Properties window click the Advanced tab.
4 In Advanced click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery.
5 In the Startup and Recovery window uncheck the Automatically restart check box.
6 Click Ok.
Now, I know that this may not work for some, but for me it worked just perfectly,… no more reboots :)!!! I hope I helped ,cause I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about those restarts. And sorry for my English, I’m from Bulgaria^^

1. Uninstall any additional codecs you have (K-Lite, FFDShow, Nero codecs, Divx …) from the ‘Add/Remove Programs’ section of your Windows Control Panel.
2. Reset your codecs using the Codec Reset Tool - When asked to choose between Service Pack 1 and SP2, those of you who have SP3 must choose the SP2 option (in fact, this tool was specifically created for Morrowind’s NetImmerse & Oblivion’s Gamebryo engines).
3. Restart your computer.
4. Install K-Lite BASIC 4.3.4.
Windows Vista Users: (Thanks to Davyke)
1. Uninstall any additional codecs you have (K-Lite, FFDShow, Nero codecs, Divx …) from the ‘Add/Remove Programs’ section of your Windows Control Panel.
2. Restart your computer.
3. Install the latest STABLE version of Vista Codec Package.
4. Restart your PC.
a. Open FFDShow’s Audio configuration.
b. Navigate to DirectShow control on the left side of the window.
c. You will see in the right part of the window some entries. Find ‘Don’t use with FFDShow’ tick it and add Fallout3.exe to the list (don’t forget to seperate the different items with a semicolon).
d. Do the same for FFDShow’s Video configuration.
Last Step (For Vista Service Pack 1 and XP Users): (Thanks to iago0)
5. Execute REGEDIT and navigate to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management -> Double click on PagedPoolSize -> Change the value to hexadecimal = 18000000 (that’s a 402 Mb paged memory file - It is different from your Paged File on your HDD).
- To maximize the value use 0xFFFFFFFF (auto max.) or preferably 0×20000000 (manual max.) - That’s approximately 536 Mb.
- DO NOT go below 0×0C000000 (approximately 200 Mb) aside the default value of 0.

For those of you who don’t have that specific registry key, you can safely use HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00X\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management where X is equal to the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Select -> Current, because HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet is pointing to it.
Previous post, i spent all week trying to get this game working, told ffdshow to shut up, updated all my .net framework bullshit, updated drivers. The thing that really did it was the registry change. Played for like 3 hours tonight, not one crash. YeeHaa!!!

I’ve been doing some research and I’m finding out that everyone who can play Fallout 3 has ServicePack2 installed. I have ServicePack3 installed on mine, so that’s why I probably can’t play? If anyone that has SP3 installed and can’t play the game do a rollback to SP2 and see if you can then. come back and let us know what happens.
When I try to install fallout 3 at first it said “setup.exe failed to inizialize resources” (more or less) and never installed…It just installed the driectX stuff and GFWL and afterwards it kept saying “installing Fallout 3…” But doesnt do absolutely anything. I restarted computer and now it doesnt give me any error message while installing, but it keeps to freeze on “installing Fallout 3…” and doesnt install anything. I saw it installed some files on D/Preogram Files/Bethesda/fallout 3/ And in that folder there are some files, but ther is no other folder. I left it 1 night to see if it might install anything else…but it doesn’t.
Is it the CD or my PC? Any1 has also got any installation problem?

ffdshow problem is only a problem if your have ffdshow installed (or some other codec pack that contains ffdshow, cccp in my case). All I can recommend is to install all windows updates (primarily .net framework), update all drivers (there have been problems with Realtek onboard soundcards), and because there are problems with memory holes in the programming apply the changes to the registry I mentioned previously. I also shut down any background apps, virus software, firewall etc… (not before disconnecting my internet connection). With all this I have had about 3 days of gameplay without one crash. Hope it continues…

I have downloaded Fallout 3, but my problem is that when i am born i the game freezes up soon after i choose the sex? Has anyone ever had this problem? I know after when they ask “what sex is the child” the game should ask “what name?” but i dont get that. Just “Dad” in front of “Mom” doing nothing, saying nothing. BUT when i press ‘e’ the baby cries :p

Talented, I have the exact same problem with you. My specs are Intel Core Duo T2250, Geforce 7400 256 MB, 2 GB RAM and Vista 32 bit. I know its a weak PC but I believe it should have no problems in all details low. I managed to play Crysis, Crysis Warhead, COD4 and 5, Gears Of War, Mercs 2 and all the high end games in the last 3 years with this PC. Just like Talented, I start a new game, the character is born, I pick my sex and then the scene stops. It doesn’t actually freeze, the background effects keep rolling, I can cry, and characters (mom and dad) stand still, but the scene doesn’t proceed. I’ve waited for 20 minutes. A friend with a stronger PC installed with the same copy and he had exactly the same problem. Another friend installed with another copy and he has no problems. He’s going to bring his copy to me tomorrow, so probably it’ll solve everything, but I still wonder what the problem was. Thanks.
He i figured it out. It may be the games resolution. I have a 3870.
step 1: open up the screen for fallout that says “Play, options, Data files, Tech Support, and exit”
Step 2: Click Options and turn on windowed. Shit its small but that crashing was driving me insane.
i start the game get through age 1 then as soon as im at the birthday party i cant hear n e thing i cant move all i can do is look around with my mouse
so far I didn’t have any problems apart from the ffdshow issue that I fixed and I played the game without any problems but today I open the game… and when I want to load a game it just freezes.. dosen’t get to the loading screen it just freezes at load yes or no … and I noticed that sometimes when I open the game now the menu music is not playing .. odd..
To Alex and Yatagan! It works now! I think the problem was just to reset the settings because when i had started i changed my settings and that could have messed everything up. If that doesnt work remove the game off your computer, restart and reinstall the game. I found that when i entered the game as being born pressing F9 helped speed up the game process so maybe that could help.

I just got the game a few days ago and it just keeps on crashing on me. It worked fine in the begining but when i got to that “super duper mart” or whatever, it crashes all the time. I’ll load the game and when i start moving the character around it just kicks me off back to the desktop.
Josh-I would suggest lowering some graphic settings a bit (try diff.combinations) and even better buy some RAM. That worked for me, Im not to sure that I needed to fool around with my PC in the first place. Thats the thing, some things work for some…and not for others.

My problem is that during the game, the graphics get very screwed up. Basically what happens is quite a bit of the screen is composed of large black shard looking things, that move when you change what you’re looking at. I know that it isn’t my graphics card, because when I first installed it THE GAME decided that the best graphics setting is “high detail”. Help me please
Well, add me to the growing list of unhappy players that CTD after leaving the Vault. Fine in the Vault but now I can’t play for more than 10 minutes without a CTD.
My install’s just hanging at “Installing Games for Windows(R) - LIVE”.
It doesn’t freeze, per sè, rather it just sits there for about ten minutes until I give up. I don’t even know what this compulsory “live” rubbish is, but I don’t like the sound of it. Reeks of Microsoft spyware to me…
Lol, scratch that. Another 15 minutes and it moved on. NFI why it took so long, I’ve got 4GB of RAM and an X2 2.4GHz Athlon, shouldn’t be that slow lol. Brilliant use of InstallShield by Bethesda lawl.
Everyone that is having problems have you installed the new patch before playing? I had the same problems with crashing, and I installed the new patch before I played, and it never worked for me past the birthday party.
I also have a Creative SoundBlaster X-FI, I disabled 3d sound in the creative console launcher.
So I uninstalled the game, then re-installed it with the 3D sound turned off for the sound card, and this time I did not install the patch at all.
Needless to say everything worked and I just beat the game last week. I did not have anymore crash issues at all.
Is the patch a bad patch? Just wondering.

windows xp pro 32 and 64 bit…same problem with both…and then i reinstalled a new copy of the 32bit win on a new hdd…and still the same

I had the same problem with F3 freezing up within seconds upon loading a save game. I got as far as in Megaton but always freezing within several seconds. Not exactly fun. I was ready to write it off as yet another loss when I came across a board that suggested closing programs running in the background via msconfig. Viola I did as it said: START/RUN (OR IN VISTA START SEARCH)/ MSCONFIG… a system configuration window appears. UNder the GENERAL tab Click SELECTIVE START UP. Make sure to UNCHECK the LOAD SYSTEM START UP box. Then go back to the top and click the SERVICES tab. Click HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES. The list should be remarkably smaller and click DISABLE ALL. Click APPLY or OK and restart computer. THat was it! I now run F# with ultra high settings and it works and runs beautifully.

In addittion to my last post…Now that I can play F3 I notice it’s a RPG. I thought maybe it be like thief or something. I dont care to spend 300 hours interacting with the characters of the story. Give me a job and tell me who to shoot. The game looks great, though. I like JERICHO much better as a game. IMHO.

yeah the game looks great and has some nice features…and there are several ways you can play it, ex your “home town” can be megaton or the random penny tower (can’t remember the name)…ther’s also loads of funny stuff for you to find and many places to explore
I have played from the beginning to the end (credits) with Megaton as my home town…but now I’m trying to do it an other way, I’m going to blow up Megaton…if I get out from the Supply Store in Megaton that is… :/
I think this might be a great game if it just would run properly. The game just freezes at random spots without a warning. I made it out of the vault and then started getting random freezes. Hope there will be a real fix for this at some point. Until that i guess we just have to wait.
Can’t even start the install… I insert the cd, nothing happens. Go to my computer, try manually starting the installer or anything at all, and it says
“this appliation has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.”
Hello i’m Thor i had the same problem with the emulation programs, i couldn’t get it to work so i uninstalled all the crap on my computer and still nothing worked, i havent red if any one have come up with a solution which works, but well i tried to first get the fallout 3 lanuncher which there is a link to on number 20 of the posts, and then when i had that i went into (this is PC not Mac) Control panel i believe it name is, and then add and remove programs, and under that, over in the left side of the window theres one named add new program, if you got your cd in your computer at the moment under there, there is a buttom where you can hit “Install game” then you first install it there, and then when you got it installed you use the Fallout 3 launcher to start it up, you have to do this every time though, and then you just hit “Play” but i got problems when i am out in the waste land too, right now i am trying to clean my computers database and gonna clean it IRL i might think it is some dust on my graphic card, hope i have helped and hope i will get help in the future! - Thor

th egame has no other glitches for me than that a while back if i killed afrendly and saved it would frezee up for some people this might be the fddshow thing and others it might be the C:\ drive Locals which for kp users are diferent from vista and block saving of some files the shity thing is that most XP users can not acses this feture so youll just have to deal with it. but do look into it it gets very anoying in late game
IF u r using XP or VISTA to close out of a game freeze push CTRL, ALT, and DELETE keys simultaneously and use TASK MANAGER to END PROCESS. That way you won’t need to restart your computer..
IF you are running XP or VISTA try using MSCONFIG. GO to START and at RUN or START SEARCH type msconfig and disable ALL non-microsoft services under the SERVICE tab. When I did that the game ran perfect. Before that it would freeze within 20 secs…
to alan, oh yeah because if i just could have done ctrl alt delete i would still reboot my computer… really get real, some one that plays a game like this gotta know just alittle tiny bit about computer funtions..

i the all knowing havee figurd the answer when you start out in megaton and you have the option of blowing the bomb or difusing it dont defuse and at the very least chose to blow it and you wont encounter the problem again you are welcome from my genius

System freeze sounds like major HW conflict. Did you take Odin’s advice and DISABLE all non-microsoft services using msconfig?

This is an amazing game.
Only problem is, every 5-10 minutes of playing I it crashes. Music plays on for a few minutes, then the famous ’send error report’ of Fallout 3 appears.
Tried most of the stuff here, running on SP2 (getting SP3 right now), updated drivers and such. I’m hoping for a nice fix from the developers, because some shit is wrong here.

Good luck trying to return the game. If you bought it on Steam there’s no way they’ll return it and Bethesda’s stopped replying to requests as to what to do if you don’t feel like spending a week reconfiguring your machine to play this POS. Too bad. I was really looking forward to playing it.

Hello! people i think you need to clean up your computers both with blowing all the dust out of your computer and clean your computer with virus scan, after i did that i only encounter minor flaws like if a missle hits the ground like inside 2 meters of me theres a small chance that the game will shut down, but its very play able. and to alan yes i allways shut everything down before i begin my games.
I shut all non-windows running services off permanently via msconfig. I have been playing F3 now for a total of abt 12 hrs game play and it’s awesome. I blew up Megaton just to see the result and that was cool. Now I am stuck and surrounded by super mutants and this glowing ghoul guy that I cant kill, lol..

I’m sure many people can’t find any folder in their “start > program files” with FFDShow. Doesn’t mean you don’t have it!
That’s because it’s installed through something else, like as a codec in the installation of K-LITE codec pack (or something like that).
You can still find it and change the settings to disable it in Fallout3.exe.
VISTA INSTRUCTIONS (at least in my case): Click on the big “Start” button, in “start search”, type “ffdshow”, you’ll see “ffdshow audio decoder” and “ffdshow video decoder”. You can click on them and then see the settings menu. Second option on the left is “DirectShow control”. In the content area of that option is “Don’t use ffdshow in” and a list of software. Click “edit”, then browse to where your Fallout3.exe is. Add it, click “Apply” in the ffdshow window and you’re done.
I had freezes at certain specific locations, rebooting wouldn’t solve it. After I did this, it wouldn’t freeze anymore.
Had been playing Fallout 3 fine with all graphics on with my Geforce 9800 GT 512, no fram skips long loads or nothing. But then about 1 hour into it as I was approaching a battle in the wasteland, the game suddenly crashes, and gives me this error:
“The exception unknown software exception (0×00000fd) occured in the application.”
I looked at the error report and it said:
“Faulting application fallout3.exe, version 1.0.0.15, faulting module fallout3.exe, version 1.0.0.15, fault address 0×007d77a1.”
I would greatly appreciate it if you could assist me in finding the cause and solution of this problem. Thanks in advance!

Just rebuilt my computer with a new motherboard but the same cpu, ram, video card, sound card, drives, etc. With the previous build I had to run F3 in windowed mode to avoid crashing. Now I can run it maxed out in full screen mode. The main difference between the motherboards? The new one has an Intel chipset instead of that crappy nVidia nForce 680i chipset. Of course there might have been other problems that reinstalling Windows fixed, but my gut tells me it was that damn 680i chipset. Good riddance.

To shut down all non-windows services (applications) go to START (big button bottom left of your screen) find RUN or START SEARCH type MSCONFIG under the SERVICES tab click HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES then click DISABLE. APPLY, ok…Restart computer..see if that works:-)

Abdallah… I would check those settings in msconfig just to be sure they were checked off. If you just hit OK without APPLY, first, then those changes were not set.
I was playing Fallout3 the last month with no problems.
I changed my video card to a Radeon 4850 which had problems
and I returned. Put my ATI 1900xt back in redoing all drivers
with cleanup etc and Fallout 3 crashes right away with the
C0000005 exception.
This is a memory exception error.
Before I hadn’t changed my drivers for awhile so maybe the
memory space it used to load was different or something
else was changed. I reloaded Fallout3 so I’d guess it’s
a conflict with something that loads in the memory.
Half life Episode 2 works fine.
Fallout3 crew will have to fix it.

Abdallah, sorry to hear that. F3 was freezing for me immediately upon playing the game. I purchased mine from STEAM. I disabled ALL non-windows services, restarted computer and viola, works fine. I have the game set on ultra and it looks sweet. If you don’t have anything particularly valuable on your computer I would reinstall the OS and start with a clean driver slate. That’s extreme but doable. I usually do this 2 or 3 times a year anyway.

Hey WTF…did you read the other previous posts? There are many things to check…are your motherboard, video, and audio drivers up to date? There’s something called ffdshow that is giving some ppl probs. My problem was as soon as I started playing the game it would freeze or get that same pop-up you get. What did I do? I typed in MSCONFIG at the start/run button (start/start search for Vista users) and disabled ALL non-Windows servises and apps.. restarted the comp and viola! F3 runs great and I just beat the game…took me abt a week to do so… hope this helps.

Explain how you “did that”. Did you go through and use msconfig? You need to shut down ALL non-microsoft services which includes ANY anti-virus programs.
i guess the only solution is to wait to bethesa to release the patch that will fix all that stuff my game doesnt freeze it only crashes i play about 2 minutes then crashes always tried everything …useless
I found these suggestions..
Disable your virtual memory (pagefile).
That means 0Mb pagefile for all drives. Or you can just click in the “My computer” Preferences “no paging file”, apply, and you’re set.
I’m using XP, so not sure how it works for Vista.
Try the game in WINDOWED MODE.
that didnt work for me however i found a solution i righ-clicked on my fallout 3 main folder then clicked on sharing and security then i disabled read-only and and clicked apply now the game still crashes but when it does i just re-click on the icon on the taskbar where the start is and i countinued playing flawless =)
shit that only worked one time now it returned to crashing but without send or no send so i cant click back on the icon its like this game is a living thing that fights back i am at suicide risk

Abdallah…If I was still having probs like you I would reinstall Windows from scratch, load all the updates Vista (or XP) needs, download update all my MB and video drivers, then use MSCONFIG to shut down ALL non-wondows services and apps like useless virus detectors.. But that’s me
My crashes comes after killing friedly people and then when I try to save it crashes…basicly I can play but if a friendly person dies I can’t save…so if some random creature kills a trader (for ex.) I can’t save…so now the game is just lame…
it freezes when i try to get back into tenpenny tower (xbox 360). and i have loaded a previous save and now i cant get in throughthat either.
I use the CCP (Community Codec Pack) and so i tried the fddshow thing with that. It seems to prevent the “unknown software exception (0×00000fd)” from appearing so often, though it still happens on occasion when I leave a town (annoying!). However the game recently froze on me for the first time…had to ctrl-alt-delete to exit the game. Music still playing, but nothing else happening accept me frozen staring accross the waste. This game has more bugs than ANY I’ve ever played. Wish someone would patch/fix the important ones
The ffdshow fixed my issue of starting the game, but during the game it did crash. I don’t know how reviewers for these games could test run it and give it game of the year.

well this is a bit unusual way i have a nvidia geforce 8600 gts graphic card so this soulution might help who have the same card i ran the game the game in windowed mode and in 1024 x 768 resolution aa and af off ,i played the game still crashes and send and dont send appear i bring up the task messenger so i can control the desktop mouse then i put the error sign down where i cant see it press on the game tab down where start is and continue playing flawless. i got the window as big as the screen btw ,but with the blue part at the top ,not annoying that much every1 can live with that as long as they can play =)
btw dont press close or click x on the error sign just drag it down where you cant see it , and when you want to exit the game use the task messenger or whatever it is called (control+alt+delete) hope this helps =)
I had the problem of CTD. It was happening more outside than in and it was happening anything from every 5 mins to 30 mins. 2 words folks WINDOWED MODE. It plays like it should and as my native resolution is 1280×1024 I can just put it in that windowed and move the window slightly and wala.
Ugh.. got to the outside and it crashed. Now it crashes before the game starts. Even window mode doesn’t work.
Noticed distorted noise coming from playing the game now. It’s caused by the music soundtrack since I can turn it all the way down, and the sounds is gone but the footsteps, hitting sounds okay.. but any case now I can’t play.

Installation issue:
Problems begin at moment when Direct X components are being installed. DVD drive acts weird and seems like it has a problem reading a content of disc. However installation goes on and when gets to: C:\…\layout.bin a window pops out with:
The folowing error occured on the file ‘D:\layout.bin’
The volume does not contain recognised file system.
Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted. (0×3ed)
I had the game installed when i was running my old vid card and xp and i never had any problems with it. Yesterday i installed vista and my new 9800 gtx from nvidia and i am getting crashes. The message pops up saying it has crashed and if i close it windows will find a solution. I have updated vista and all my drivers does anyone have any idea how i can fix this?

Justin…it could be a driver issue for the dvd player. It could be a page filer problem. It could be any number of things. Did you try right clicking on the icon in MY COMPUTER for your specific drive usually D.?
Whenever I try to install the game, it freezes at “C:\Fallout3\Data\Fallout - Meshes.bsa”

I just returned my game to the store and got my money back! I can’t even complit the first mission…so now I’m happy….I tested a downloaded and cracked version of the game and I took away all the saved files and everything and now I’m playing and it works just fine…atleast for now
On ps3 my fallout freezes everytime i get near jefferson memorial it doesnt matter what direction i come it just keeps happening as if there is an invisable wall around it. gone on from previous save and done loads of side missions that have taken hours gone back to unlock the door on the bow of she ship at rivit city and because i have to go near jefferson memorial i cant get to it because it freezeswhich means i cant look for mr pinkerton in the bow of the ship so i can complete the replicated man side quest and i cant complete the main story. can anybody please help.

alan - I did shutdown some services, and disabled ffd. Can play a little bit then crashes. Well at least it loads fast. Just have to save more often. I’ll probably later try shutting down more services, but some of them I know I need later. I did switch to windowed mode which helps a bit.
Hard to tell when it will crash. Sometimes crashes before you can click Continue, other times it plays for 15 minutes.

Any service (non-Windows) you would need just start that program via clicking an icon on your desktop/quick launch/or START-PROGRAMS… I disabled ALL non-Windows programs and F3 NEver freezes or crashes since..
My fallout 3 crashes all the time I am leaving super-duper mart. It is a permanent bug since I’ve been trying everything (changing resolution, graphics options, actualizing some graphics (divix drivers), sleeping some time, leaving all the equipment, etc. ) I am dissapointed deeply because I have no earlier saves and I can’t ommit that quest. I left the game 2 weeks ago probabily forever.

I figured out my problem.. It was the brand new nvidia 181.20 drivers.. I thought it was fallout 3’s new patch because I installed both at the same time.. so i rolled back the drivers to 180.48 and it works perfectly
Errrm.. Those of you that cant load your saved games, if you signed up for LIVE after you saved your games it will like change profile, so Log off LIVE and load your games
In my case there was no LIVE action. My saved games load normally, the problem occurs during changing one special location only: super-duper mart->outside. That’s all. Last patch (1.1.0.15) doesn’t seem to solve this. Any ideas?
DO NOT INSTALL THE LATEST PATCH FROM STEAM. F3 was working perfectly until 5 mins ago when I let steam update the game. I started it and it says fallout 3 has stopped working…
I am getting a CTD (crash to desktop) with out any error reports. This occurs every time I attempt to open the atrium door and try to load or continue any saves after the previous crash. I can create a new game but it still crashes at the same point. I have reinstalled the game once, added fallout 3 to the ffdshow codec exception list(audio, and video), set the controls to default, updated EVERY driver and my BIOS, reinstalled new audio codes to replace the old ones, set the video controls to the lowest settings, uninstalled .net framework 3 and it still crashes at the same point. My hardware greatly surpasses the recommended system specs all with drivers downloaded today(1-15-09)no beta ones. I am running a XFX nforce 780i, xfx gtx 280, 4gb corsair dominator mem 1066mhz, 3.00ghz dual core, XP Pro sp3. I have also intsalled the latest patch but the game still crashes, same as before!
I have the same issue as alan above… auto install of the steam update and now…. nothing…. launch screen comes up with sound, hit PLAY and nothing, no error message, just my desktop… such shit.
hey Rich– I had the exact same problem with my nvidia card.. if you have the new 181.20 driver, I found it caused the game to crash, with no error message. Roll your driver back to the 180.48 WHQL driver.

I was getting CTD every 5 mins or so untill I turned off anti virus and disabled the write combining option in the advanced display settings (right click on desktop, Properties, Settings tab, click advanced, Troubleshoot tab and then uncheck the write combining box) this enabled me to play all night with no crashes, this may or may not work for you.
FINALLY WORKING and STABLE 12 HOURS: First thanks to all of you guys for your help. As a very advanced computer user, fixing computer problems becomes an obsession. This one was very bad to the point that I would give up (impossible me give up!). Now this has been very rare that a ten minute fix or tweak wouldn’t work for a game. Has it been about five years for me? Was the last time due to a hidden virus? I’m still trying to remember. I have a bad flu so I had all day to play.
Sorry for the unscientific-like methodology of what worked for me but information is power. I can’t isolate any one fix. Some fixes were don because of redundant programs or the usual bi-weekly maintenance. I’m running Vista X64 Ultimate which is a critical bit of information. I have an ASUS 9600GT. For one thing I DID NOT try the .ogg fix where users associated WMP with it or went to the extreme of conversion. I did remove all codecs and installed the latest x64 codecs. Used the FFDshow fallout3.exe fix. For obvious reasons, I uninstalled ASUS Smart Doctor and GamerOSD because throttling could be an issue where the VATs could actualize that feature. Lastly, Nero was superfluous for me so I removed that program suite.
Now I tried to deliberately push the game power user style to make it crash at “all the familiar places” (burn in test) to my surprise the game worked fine where it would have crashed 20 or 30 times.
As a side note to my post 434, I upgraded my drivers to the new nVIDIA and REALTEK drivers. That’s important. These are things one needs to do anyway. Therefore, my fix coincided with “you got to do it anyway” modality. I did go the extra mile because the game is a work of art, something not said lightly. It’s “idea intensive”.
I also want to thank everyone again for selflessly conveying what they know to help others. That’s why I was determined to return to this site and write this post.

Go to your event veiwer and see what file it tells you is missing when you try to start the game. (most prob MSvoc80.dll or something like that) Then google the file and look for a download (prob be zipped), once downloaded unzip the files and copy them to the same directry that the .exe file for the game is in, this should then launch the game fine.

What the heck is ffdshow? I am looking everywhere for it and cannot find it. Please help. Game crashes the moment I load a saved file. I tried to replay from the beginning and got further only to get the same crash at a different spot. Now everytime I try to play. it keeps kicking me back to windows. HELP!!!!!! HERES WHAT YOU SHOULD DO.
Go to tes nexus and download windows maximizer mode for fallout 3. Then configure it as explained in the readme. (Its not hard or complicated very easy.)
Then start the game in windowed mode. Once inside a game Alt-tab and run Windows maximizer it will expand the window and it will look like full screen. This REALLY STOPPED THE CRASHES FOR ME. I tried a lot of other fixes but none worked.

You should esspecially (sorry for spelling) try this fix with windows maximizer. My game does not crash in windowed mode either, this mod simply expands that window so it look like full screen. Hope it will work!
Can’t install Fallout 3 because your DVD-ROM doesn’t like SecuROM? Running setup.exe simply causes your DVD-ROM to spin endlessly without any progress? I worked out a solution for myself. Perhaps, it will help you, too.
STEPS:
1) Boot your computer with the game disc already in the drive. This will avoid causing the auto-play feature to lock up your computer.
2) Right-click on your DVD-ROM drive and select “Explore.” The “in-use” light on your DVD-ROM should come on as the device checks the disc. WAIT FOR THE “IN-USE” LIGHT TO GO OFF BEFORE PROCEEDING. If the “in-use” does not go off, then your computer has locked up, and you need to begin again with step #1.
3) Hover your mouse cursor over the “FalloutLauncher.exe” file. The DVD-ROM’s “in-use” light should come on again as your computer loads information about the file. When the “in-use” light has gone off, and the file is represented by its true icon (a smiling Pip Boy face), you are ready to go on to step #4. If the light does not go off, your computer has locked up, and you need to begin again with step #1.
4) Now, right-click on icon for the “FalloutLanucher.exe” file. The “in-use” light will go on, again, as the computer gathers information about the file. It is not necessary for you to take any action from the right-click menu. You are simply letting the computer “get familiar” with the file so that it will not hang when you are installing it. Once the “in-use” light goes off, you are ready to move on to step #5. If the “in-use” light does not go off, your computer has locked up, and you need to begin again with step #1.
5) Repeat steps #3 and #4 for every executeable and cab file on the disc. This is time-consuming, and your computer may lock up at any time, on any file, but this is the only way you’re going to install the game from your DVD until the SecuROM Team fixes the problems with their copy-protection.
Once you have “familiarized” your computer with every installation file, you SHOULD be able to run “setup.exe” manually from the DVD without it locking up your computer. If it does, eject the DVD from the drive, restart your computer, and try again.
Estimated time to complete installation in this manner: 1-5 hours, depending upon how many times you have to go back to step #1.
Hello everyone. I believe I’m as sick and pissed off as all of you who couldn’t solve their issues.
Mine’s goes like this: When I try to exit the vault 101, the game would crash after loading and just before showing the outside. I’ve already tried the following: Reinstalled Nvidia drivers (175.19 - 178.13 - 180.48 and 181.20 which I’m currently using.)(the problem persisted so I think it’s not a video drivers issue), FFDshow fix, reinstalled codecs, Edited memory ussage on regedit, lowering graphics on Nvidia control panel as well as in-game settings, deleted saved games, started a new game, putting controls to default settings, windowed mode, tryed almost anything but there’s no way to avoid that crash. I’m currently upgrading my Realtek audio drivers and making a HDD defrag. I’ll reinstall the game after that. (reinstalled it 4 times already). Posting the resoults after this try…
Anyways, if you know any way to help me I will be more than grateful. Just want to play the game as everyone else.
Oh and by the way, if you’re having crashes after the intro video, deactivate Shadows in the graphics settings (not Low quality shadows, I mean totally disabled). That fixed the issue here.

I use ffdshow & it makes the game freeze, so when I tried to find the ffdshow folder it didn’t show up. Not when I look in programs & not when search it & not when I look in uninstall programs. help?
To find ffdshow.
Just load an avi file and the ffdshow icons will appear down near your pc clock. Just right click on the ffdshow audio decoder icon and then a list will appear then simply click on ffdshow audio decoder in the list and it will take you to the options.
I keep crashing and getting sent back to the desktop trying to finish Tranquility Lane. Very frustrating game, wish they had tested it far more before it’s release. Having said that, it is a very engrossing and totally enjoyable game to play.
I hope my above advice regarding how to find ffdshow helps.

Im sick and tired of Fallout 3 not working, i have been through all 451 posts and tried everything, but still it refuses to work. I’m tearing my hair out! It worked fine in the vault but then BAM! crashes every few minutes when i leave. Why did these stupid people not even test the game before release? someone should take their asses to court or something. I’ve only had the game for one freakin day and it just amazes me how many times i have sent an error report (somewhere close to 40) after the game has CTD. I have updated to the 1.1 patch but still it doesnt work. I know im not the only one with this problem and i know its a waste of time contacting the Bethesda support because they won’t do anything to help. I hope they release a patch to fix all these bugs and crashes before more people waste their money on this game.

Download the maximized windowed mode from tes nexus. It will expand your window so it will look like full screen. I had the same problem it would always crash exept in windowed mode. Now i use this mode and it doesent crash any more!

I have the same problem as Alex “roaches attack the one guard Kendall” then it crashes. Can’t get past that point. I tried everything I think. The defrag, updated drivers, etc. Its at that point were some kind of cut-scene or a pause that the game crashes. I also have NVIDIA 8800 GTS. I think its just a tweaked in the graphics card, but what do I know. Does anybody know how to fix this problem? Iam now 4 days in this and $55 for this game. Please Help!

I had a similar problem it kept crashing every time the game loaded another game map, I just turned off auto-save in gameplay and I save manually every now and again, it still crashes still but not as much as before.
So if anyone keeps crashing during auto-save turn it off and do a manual save, and you don’t have to go to the Main Menu to save all the time.
Just open up the console using ~ on a desktop or ` on a laptop and type save [save name]. Replace [save name] with whatever name you want to call your save.
When I install I get this error message: Default Feature file data2.cab data error cyclic redundancy check.
Anyone know how to fix this?

well when i first tried to install said that the exe file had a trojan so i put into quarantine then when i installed it froze and windows live, so i let out of quarentine and it installed but when i run the screen goes black with the hour glass but then closes and i get a windows error or somthing, it might be my temp install files, any one wanna help me out?
I’ve got the same problem as a lot of other people, with Fallout 3 crashing when trying to start a new game. I’ve tried disabling ffdshow (both audio and video), running the game in windowed mode, with lower graphics, using a crack, not using a crack, updating to the most recent version, disabling lots of non-windows services, I’ve even tried that fan-made patch (that took forever) - so far nothing has worked. Did Bethesda do any testing AT ALL before releasing this game? It seems like 50% of everyone who buys the game end up not being able to play it. It’s been out for some time now. Most of these issues should be solved by now.
What pisses me off the most is that since I don’t have one of the officially supported video cards, I don’t get any support at all - even if the problem has nothing to do with the video driver whatsoever!
Hi, for those experiencing crashes while playing, turn off anti-aliasing and anisotropic, it worked for me, am getting no crashes now. My system is Intel Core2Duo, 1GB RAM, 8600GT Latest Drivers. Also crashes may results from over heating of the graphic card; fallout 3 may crank your Card up to 73 degrees.

Alright I’m getting the “Failed to initialize renderer” error still and I’ve tried everything I can think of to fix it, but nothing has worked. I even tried running it in 640×480 and 256 colors, but then I just got an error saying “Failed to initialize renderer. Windowed mode is not supported on this Adapter.” Anyone have any solutions yet?

Cant even start the game..Keep getting “command line syntax error” when I install, then crashes with “new game”

I have consistently had issues with the game since I started playing but as I progressed they became more frequent. The problems are mostly related to freezing. Black screens with and without music freezes. Normal screens with and without music freezes. Game freezes when exiting/entering a structure. Freezes in V.A.T.S. Freezes when simply walking around. Most of the time I have to restart the system and load from last save but on occasion it will momentarily freeze for several seconds and then resume as normal. It will lag quite a bit for only a fraction of a second or up to a second when walking around. I have also had it go into a permanent choppy frame rate, that’s the only way I can describe it, similar to early films that had a low frame rate, only solution is to save and reload. Other glitches include enemies I have not yet been in battle with flying at a high rate of speed by me and landing quite a distance away. Also enemies that I have killed but their bodies disappear as soon as they die. Checking a metal box or something of similar nature or a body that does NOT say [EMPTY] and finding it empty or not being able to check bodies or objects at all, I only hear a click when it clearly states ‘Search …….” or “Open …..” On a few occasions during an explosion there is a wire spinning spider like thing that erratically floats around in the air. I have also purchased medical help from a doctor and then looked at my status and there was no change. I have gotten stuck between objects and had to restart, most memorably at the ranger compound storage room. There are objects that you cannot obtain or move that you would normally be able to elsewhere in the game, again most memorably at the ranger compound storage room there is a deans electronics underneath a generator that could not be obtained. I have had sound issues such as when I am firing a weapon there will be no sound at all or at times it will come later after I am finished firing. I usually listen to the score of the game and at times it will go silent during normal game play. Speaking of sound issues, I have the PS3 connected via HDMI to a large HDTV and then logitech computer speakers connected to the tv. When playing any other game or when using the computer or watching a movie or anything else that requires sound they work perfectly but when playing Fallout 3, some music, dialog and other game sounds only come out of the right speaker so there is some issue there but that’s probably not common with most players. Another issue is that I will be in battle and then after I have finished and have been walking a while it will indicate the damage I’ve inflicted on my enemy instead of it registering as it should upon contact. Pipboy screen on several occasions will become so bright when I bring it up that its almost impossible to read, while everything else is normal brightness, I have to save and reload to resolve the issue. I don’t know if this is a glitch or designed into the game but I noticed a couple of times when I was firing the Vengeance (which for those of you who don’t know is the upgraded model of the Gatling Laser) off of the top of a small cliff at an enemy, the laser would go straight a few feet and then turn 90 degrees and hit the enemy. We all know a laser goes in a straight line plus my gun was pointed out and not down at the enemy. I have 3 followers or rather had 3 followers now two….this is another glitch it seems. Had Fawkes, Dogmeat and Charon. Fawkes and Charon followed me into a building but Dogmeat for some reason stayed behind. (no enemies nearby) When I had explored the building I then exited to the wasteland to find: “Dogmeat has died”. I have had on numerous occasions had one or the other or all 3 not follow me at all and I have to go back and find them or have to reload the game because they would stand in one spot while I traveled quite a distance away. I have noticed friends and foes alike completely frozen throughout the game where you cannot interact with them and you can walk through them as though they were not there. Other somewhat ‘normal’ glitches are different scenery will flash/blink or not look as it was obviously designed to. Remembering way back after entering the classroom it would not let me take the G.O.A.T. Sound of gun fire when entering a structure or some other clicking or pounding sound when no one but me is in the structure is another glitch. I have never played a game with so many problems and I am not even close to listing them all, but still this is the most appealing game to me that I have ever played. If it were not as awesome as it is I would have never put up with all its errors. Maybe I’m not as experienced as most gamers but when dealing with a game of this magnitude problems can be expected.

After all that you atill pay the game? Lol.. I know I know… I purchased mine thru STEAM and wasn’t going to let $50 go easily. I had it for almost a week trying to get it to run without it freezing. I did a GOOGLE search for fallout 3 troubleshotting (there’s plenty of them) and I found a solution for my computer. I just disabled ALL non-windows services using msconfig. Restarted the computer and viola! I have it set at ULTRA levels and no crashes except once do to a heat issue. IF I went through 10 % of the crap you going through I would have said fork it! No game is worth this mess!
I had also all sort of crashes, mosty during coming in/out places. My config is core 2 duo , 8600gt …most enough for high settings BUT 1 GB of RAM!!! I emphase this , cos the moment i added 1 more gig the game run flawless!!!

I got these random freeze ups too. Especially inside houses and for me there are so far 4 houses (or 5 can’t recall) where I’ll freeze almost instantly. 3 houses are in the city where the fireants are and where you can get rid of them.
And fourth is in the tranquility lane simulation. I haven’t tested this trick with the houses in that city yet but it could work with them too.
So to the point.
Just DISABLE FRAPS. Don’t use fraps. I didn’t have it running while I was entered the abandon house in tranquility lane simulation and it just ran nicely. When I had fraps running BOOM almost instant freeze.
Oh yeah, the fifth place is at the Big town in Bittercup’s house. Though it isn’t 100% freeze up quaranteed, it is very sensitive place and I have to test this out there too but I think this may resolve it.
So.
Don’t use FPS counters while you play.
My problem seems a little stranger. My game barely ever froze (maybe once every few days). I am now level 13 and the game is unplayable. Sometimes it will crash every minute, sometimes I can go 30 minutes or so before it crashes.
When it crashes, the screen just simply locks up and freezes, and i have to do an CTRL ALT DEL to get out. I don’t know what is wrong. I deleted almost all my save files. etc. I have 8 gigs of ram, a quad core 2.6mhz CPU and an Asus nVidia 9600GT card. Obviously specs are not a problem.
Any ideas? I dont even have FFDshow on my computer so obviously thats not the common problem here.

START/RUN (OR IF U R RUNNING VISTA START SEARCH)/ type MSCONFIG… a system configuration window appears. UNder the GENERAL tab Click SELECTIVE START UP. Make sure to UNCHECK the LOAD SYSTEM START UP box. Then go back to the top and click the SERVICES tab. Click HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES. The list should be remarkably smaller and click DISABLE ALL. Click APPLY or OK and restart computer.

Great gaming machine, updated drivers, played the game completely through once with maybe 2 CTDs, started a new game and can’t get past the atrium. At least 7 unistalls and reinstalls, new patch, new video card (ATI 4650), and I’ve tried everything listed above. The people at Bethesda must be laughing their asses off. Thanks again.

Sorry to hear that. Did you try rolling back to a previous restore point? I would try that. Roll it back on a day it worked if you didn’t already try it. Its in ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/ SYSTEM RESTORE.

I run F3 from Steam. The latest upgrade will cause my game to freeze. Roll back if you updated your game.

That fixed my freezing problems. And I have read enought to be enough convinced that the game has issues with QUAD CORE processors. That fix will force the game to use only up to two threads instead of four on quad cores because if the thread usage on quad cores get dropped from 3 or 4 to 2 or 1, the game freezes.
That fix prevents the game ever even reaching using more than 2 threads. Yes it gives slight impact on performance but my FPS has been mostly the same 85 with exception of fps going down and up a bit more often as previously.
Hi.I have a pretty strange problem.I bought F3 quite a while ago.i managed to achieve level 20 and to accomplish the main quest along with most side.
Then i left the game for a couple of months and found out about the new patch and the add-on. So I applied the patch, installed OA and loaded my last save game(before the last main quest). just the second I used VATS,the game CTD,and i saw ffd icons on the toolbar.I never had any major problems with the game before,and it was 20+ hrs of play. Still,I disabled fallout3 AND the launcher in ffdshow.Turned on the game again,happy that im over with this minor issue,just to discover, that the game freezez just after clicking a savedgame(any savegame I want to load) or continue.It wont even CTD, it just freezes 5-10-20 minutes,and forces me to c+a+d and close it from the manager.
I reinstalled the game,did not apply the patch,and the same error occured.I applied the patch and still the same.I installed OA and the problem was still fucking there.
Does anyone have any ideas?I know its not my hardware,and I did not install any software that could interfere with the game.

I have already disabled FFD show and its accompanying programs and I am still getting CTD’s. I have tried disabling AA, but still getting CTD’s. Originally I had no CTD in the first 20 hours, now I get it every hour, and nothing has changed on my rig/windows. Why the hell should I disable AA so the game looks crap huh? I didnt buy a 9800gtx for nothing. This is a new HD too, and doesn’t need defragging or anything, windows is perfect, and everything else runs fine. I’m getting FED UP with this game, as there are constant bugs that are getting on my goat. The STUPID VATS idea that allow you to release 3 dozen rounds in the concrete 5mm away. Getting stuck talking to idiot characters, getting stuck in scenerey, and the fact that this game can actually crash my rig needing a reboot? WTF?

I fixed it. After trying every last thing on this website, I went back through this entire stream and decided to go back to basics. Followed entry 55 from last October. For those who have similar platforms: Dual core 1.8s, 2 GB Ram, ATI Raydeon HD 4650, and a large hard drive, first unistall FO3, do a simple disk clean up, a defrag, update your drivers, then reinstall from the folder. Mine was CTD at the same spot at the beginning in the vault atrium area. Many struggles and reinstalls with no luck until I did the above. Now it’s a cruiser. Oh, I did not download the Jan 13 patch. I found the easiest way as suggested up above, seems to be to run it in a window : ) avoids the headache altogether it seems.
Fallout 3 (PC) keeps on crashing in the same damn place. I get the BB guns shot the target the rad roach comes I shot it an BAM crashes. I did what it said on top I also downloaded the patch an it still keeps crashing in the same place. I know it’s not my PC as I can play Crysis with the graphics set on high. I about two seconds from snaping the damn disc as it seems I wasted $50 on a POS. Please help if you can.
ShadowRoo - Same exact place I started having my problems. Then once I got past it and it started crashing while escaping the vault in the exact place. If the drivers are updated, I highly suggest you clean and defrag your hard drive. I tried everything on this website and that was what finally worked.

My friends, there is hope! I have found a fix! For those of us with Quad Core processors who are experiencing random screen freezes, I have found the fix and it works! Played all night and didn’t freeze once! Heres what to do:
For anyone who has their game freeze up randomly:
The game engine has some issues with processors that have more than 2 cores. You can force the game to only use two of them and it will stop the freezing. I haven’t had it freeze once since I did this several days ago.
Open up the fallout.ini file in: My Documents\My Games\Fallout3
Find the line:
bUseThreadedAI=0
change it to:
bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line after it and insert:
iNumHWThreads=2
This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.
Now, what we need to do is get the word to Bethseda so they can fix this in their next patch so we CAN use Quad core processing (afterall, we paid for it). But for now, I am very happy to at least be able to play this game! Get the word out!!! Unfortunately, im sure this isn’t the same problem everyones having, but this IS the fix for those of us with Quad Core CPUs experiencing random freezes.
Could any plz help me. I have this error when I try to boot the game. It says, This Application has failed to start because d3dx9_38.dll was not found. Re-installingf the application may fix this problem’ Does anyoen know how to fix this.

I downloaded the Fallout 3 RELOADED torrent. Installed it, used a legit key of mine ( i bought the game before but the disk broke and im installing it like this ) when I click new game it just loads for a second then says Fallout 3 has stopped working.

OK people I believe I found a solution the the ctd. Those that know how all you have to do is set the affinity for the game to 1 core so far it is working for me. To set the affinity start the game but don’t load anything, hit ctl,alt.del, then task manager, applications tab right click Fallout 3, go to process, right click the highlighted process, set affinity, then choose a core it really doesn’t matter which but I chose the second one, close the windows and you should be set.

I’m having mouse trouble. I’ve tried playing in windowed mode due to the frequent crashes in fullscreen, but now in windowed mode, my mouse has weird lag. My FPS is fine, but I move the mouse and the game responds a second later. It’s perfectly smooth, but it’s always behind by about a second. I tried disabling Vsync, tried screwing with the flip queue thing, tried messing with Fallout.ini, and none of it helped. Any ideas?
I have a 360. With my first character i have done many things, discovered many rare items, and killed almost everbody. I had a suite in tenpenny tower but when i tried to go into the lobby door, it froze. i tried again and again and it still froze. Pleas help

I had constant freezes (almost none in initial Vault, more later on) in the game, to the extent of having one after some 30 seconds or so. (No crashes to desktop, the screen just freezes and I could ctrl-alt-del out and kill fallout3.exe and start again.) Sometimes when starting the game I got just black scren Irritating! So I searched the ‘net for clues how to cure this annoyance. Removed ffdshow, checked directx, installed latest drivers - no help.
Then I tried adjusting the processor affinity. (I have dual-core Athlon.) Running the game with only 1 core helped me. No freezes so far after that.
So try alt-tabbing out of game and right-click fallout3.exe in Task Manager and unchecking all but one boxes at “processor affinity”. There’s also a utility called process.exe which helps you create a batch file that starts fallout and then sets the affinity.
Yep, the game’s “Enhanced for: multi-core”… Right.

After you have spoken to President Eden for the first time, you need to speak to Elder Lyons. When I wan’t to return to Elder Lyons, the screen freezes and I can’t do anything.

Well i FINALLY finished with the Skullptura fix which took almost 5 hours, and have been playing the game for about 2 hours without a crash, but unfortunately it crashed to the desktop while wandering D.C. for the first time.
I have a problem where it crashes to the desktop randomly in the game but not at the start. And i dont have an ffdshow folder in my “All Programs” tab under start. Anyone know what to do?
well I’ve been trolling through here trying to find out how to fix my random freezes. All with little success each but its cumulative, started w/ uninstalling XP codec pack, then did the MSCONFIG fix, now trying the processor affinity, and we’ll see how things go. Wish me luck.

so marked improvement, just played for a few hours w/out any problems. For those of you who are also experiencing these problems the Processor affinity (for dual/tri/quad core) users is done thusly. Start up FO3 as normal, load your game, ctrl Alt Del go to the “processes” tab, right click on FO3 at the bottom should be “Affinity…” go in and uncheck one of the processors.

been playing fallout 3 with minor crashes and i finished it. however there is no end video showing it goes right the credits … any idea how to solve that problem?
furthermore i try to update the game to play DLC stuff but the update crashes before it can update the game. i am trying to upgrade to version 1.1.0.35 but as said the updater v1.1 crashes at around 13%

My Fallout 3 crashes in the Walk to Daddy scene. No matter what I do in that scene - even just doing absolutely nothing - the game will CTD in 10 seconds or so. I’ve seen a previous post about this issue so it’s not just me. Does anyone have a resolution for this particular problem?
the best way to avoid the CTD and all the othe FAILS and bugs in the game is to UnInstall it!

hi girls.. i found something that works. my game was freezing at some locations.. now i use usb sound card (m-audio mobile pre), not my onboard realtek. game doesnt feeze anymore!!
Ok… here goes… and I TRULY hope this helps some of you:
My pc: HP media center, Core 2 duo 6400, 2gb ram, geforce 7900Gt/GTO 256mb, Realtek HD audio (what a joke), Win Xp pro Service pack 2.
What I did: I uninstalled fallout 3. I went into add/remove programs and uninstalled framework 3.5, framework 3.0, and 2008 visual c++ redistributable.
I then downloaded and installed microsoft visual c++ 2005 redistributable. So now in add/remove programs I have .NET framework 1.1 , .NET framework 1.1 Hotfix, .NET framework 2.0 service pack 2, and Microsoft visual c++ 2005 redistributable all installed. NO OTHER FRAMEWORKS OR REDISTRIBUTABLES.
I then uninstalled my nvidia drivers and deleted the nvidia folder off of my C drive manually. After that I uninstalled Realtek HD audio drivers.
I then downloaded the nvidia 178.13 drivers off of the net.
I shut down my PC.
I took my graphics card out of the PCI express slot and cleaned it for the hell of it. Reinserted the card.
I then went to best buy and bought a cheapy dynex sound card. 25 bucks, pretty basic little red card.
Came home and inserted the card into an empty pci slot.
Now, I turned on the Pc and when the found new hardware wizard came up i allowed the computer to search for software for the newly detected device(s). It installed the drivers for the dynex sound card ( had the disk for it, but the drivers can be found online as well) and then I installed the nvidia driver 178.13. Restarted my computer.
Now, I explored the fallout 3 disk and found the direct X folder. I installed directX.
I then installed the actual game, Fallout 3, onto my PC.
It detected my settings and set all my graphics to medium, but I upped the resolution and maxed out all of the draw/fade distances.
Now guys, I can’t eplain it… and I’m sure that the many of you who are much more PC savy than I will read those steps that i took^ and say ”He didn’t need to do that step” or “what was the point of that?” or “such and such program would be better” or whatever. I don’t care. All i know is, after following those exact steps^, I have now been playing Fallout 3, fullscreen mode, graphics pretty damn high, music on, and with plenty of bells and whistles, for over four hours w/o one single crash. And this coming from a guy who had the game in windowed mode, tweaking the graphics every which way, no music, trying umpteen different beta drivers and still suffering graphics tearing, and playing with crashes to the desktop that happened about every 2-5 minutes.
Not sure exactly what I did to make it work, but its working. What a truly amazing game, once you get it going. This game relies so heavily on atmosphere and immersion. And it was impossible to get into this title with the crashes and the graphic bugs, no music etc. Now I am up and running and having the time of my life.
I truly hope that some of this epic post at least points you guys in the right direction. I had been up every night after work for about 3 days fighting with this damn game, trying to get it right. And I’m so excited to say that the procedure above^ is what did the trick for me. Give some or all of those things a try, and I sincerely hope you guys get your copy of F3 up and running. Best of luck, and I hope you make it out to the wasteland soon!
I have the same problem, Ive found a few solutions, Disable anti-alisasing, try playing in windowed, you have one or more skills about 100, aka over level 20.. The game crashes for some reason when you have skills over 100, there is a file you can download that fixes this.

Erm, sorry to be the bearer of bad news guys but I’ve just completed this game and its just not even worth it.
There are no plot twists, no “OH MY GOD!” moments, no bosses or really hard parts at the end. In fact the end sequence is ridiculously easy and it leaves you feeling hollow inside. Its only AFTER the credits role, you realise you can’t go back to the game - at all. I didn’t even reach level 20 or see half of the map. Just because a company can make a game, give it a seemingly endless world to roam in, lovely graphics and a fantastic atomosphere, it DOESN’T MEAN THEY CAN WRITE A STORY.
What’s worse is that even if you’ve been playing it GOOD karma or BAD karma, the ending is nearly exactly the same, and you still can’t play on. I am so disapointed.

At first I wasn’t impressed with the game until I got used to the setting. It’s really all about walking in a certain direction, collecting ammo and repairing weapons, blasting all enemies, finding the Alien Blaster cuz without it don’t evn get spotted by the Deathclaw, and avoiding the ending as long as possible. I am on my second time through and I am purposely NOT following dad until I have covered the map. I like this game it is beautifully rendered. But like all games it gets repetetive. I bought Fear 2 last week and beat it in 2 days. I find F3 much more satisfying and wirht the money.
The thing is, this all seems pointless and souless as you complete a mission yeah, but to what avail? There are no surprises, there is nothing exciting to see after you have completed the game. I have seen all I have wanted to see, I have killed all the super mutants I wanted to kill, mastered mullering the death claws, and I’m just bored with it.
The missions don’t effect the game enough. I mean living out an evil life in F3 just doesn’t bring anything new to the game. Completing the missions too? through all the characters you meet you will not find a single one interesting that has any worth while point.

today while i was playing fallout three i walked into a sewer system. i am currently on level 8. as i walked into the room and it auto saved like it always does. i ended up dying in the sewer and respawned back to the door. then i found i could not use my right analog stick to aim. i could walk around but could not aim. i then found that when i opened my pit boy i could move around on the map with it. i loaded previous games and was able to aim just fine but when i loaded this game i could not aim no matter what. i have no idea what to do any help would be appreciated.
Fallout 3 sounds like a massive buggy game. I loved the hour or so i played on the xbox 360, but i cant even get the shit to start on my comp. beggining to think its not even worth the effort =\
If fallout 3 crashesx every time you try to load a game save or load a new game then try reinstalling your graphics card drivers. Then DO NOT RESTART YOUR COMPUTER click restart latter then open the game.

and when you got these problems with an asus video card, try to install new drivers, if you get errors during installation, you gotta reinstall windows.

Bryan I have had the same problem your haveing I did what Cersei post 529 said to do an the game works fine. Yes it is alot of shit to do but it my help you get past that part that most likely is pissing the fuck out of you. To all other haveing trouble look at post 529 that seems to work as I can play the game now an it is really good ONCE YOU GET PAST ALL THE SHIT.

I start my game, when the menu loads up, I press “Home” button, and sign out from the “Games for Windows Live”. And voala, I can see my previous save game.

Hello i am getting the fucking god damn “New Game” Crash, i push new game, push yes to confirm it, it looks like its gonna load and it does not do anything but say “Fallout 3 will have to shut down blah blah blah” Has anyone found a fix to it, besides the one above, because that doesn’t work for me
When I level up (now to 23), I choose my skill points and then my perk. When I click on done, it freeze up. I followed the steps in problem #1, seeing that I saw in my status bar the blue ffshow icon. Still getting the same problem. I even upgraded my codecs.
apparently game doesnt like it when it goes into sleep, or screen saver..this happened to me a few times while goin to bathroom and havin a cig break….id have to bring task manager or force it to quit in different manner..there is a way around it but havin to change the screensaver settings is too tedious. as reported crash to desktop, and this is from mod, but anyone get a dark texture for all of game, then the walls floors ceilings get stuck with fallout icons? the logo, pip boy image etc in the neon yellow colors? ive also got micro stuttering..if anyone else gets this, “microstuttering” where there are VERY small hiccups occuring every few seconds, go to settings and uncheck vsync under the “windowed” option, that may help…other then the desktop crash most seems fine.

im only 14 so i dont know much about this stuff but i installed it and it all started up great so before creating a game or anything i updated my game with the latest patches… well when i got back on to start a new game it loads for 2 - 5 seconds then goes to the desktop and says “Fallout 3 has stopped working microsoft will notify you if a solution is available” well i havew gotten that in things and as we all know they never notify you
so i surfed the web and its been a month now that i havent ever been able to play Fallout 3!!! so i came across this and well… posting here in hope that somebody will give me a solution before another month or 2 goes by

i have custom comp with windows xp that meets or exceeds all of the requirements for fallout which i bought today. long story short when i put the disc in nothing pops up so when i go to “my computer” and double click the blond kid icon for fallout it says something about the application failing and that i need to reinstall it but i havent installed the disc in the first place. help?!?!?!?! i need some apocalyptic goodness asap….ive been told to uninstall nero and all of my burning programs which is doable but im wondering if there is a better way. First off if you do not have ffdshow installed you can not have that problem so basically half of you are installing the codec that will cause the crash and then disabling it,
Fallout 3 has many problems most of them arise from the third party software installed along with the actuall game namely Windows live and secur rom software along with some outdated net frame work software .
most of it will interfere with your sata drives or your DVD rom drives or your vid encoders (third party media players and burners like Divix )
the # 1 cause of crashes for PC’s is multithreading.
if you do not have multi core CPU or if you have more than 2 Core’s your game will most likely Freeze @ random
you will need to restrict the game engine’s multi threading..
if you have a single core CPU turn off all multi threading swicths from the fallout.ini file .
plus add a command under the [general] section of the fallout.ini
the command line is
iNumHWThreads=
if you have a single core add the # 1
iNumHWThreads=1
if you have dual core add the # 2

yes that’s right the game engine cannot properly thread a quad core and will cause the memory to freeze .

when i load up my save fall out turns my laptop off after about 10 mins of playing. i tryed getting rid of the saves but that didnt work. my laptop works fine when not in game however when i load up fall out it just turns itself off.

I would start up the game, click on “continue last saved game”, and the game would load. I would see the screen for a few seconds, then it would crash to “windows encountered an error”, and would close the game. I Installed the patch “Fallout3_v1.1.0.35_English_US” and fixed my problem.
I have problems with the game crashing randomly, but after installing this patch, I don’t get stuck on constant crash mode anymore.
My advice: Save often, and not on the same file. I have at least 5 different save points for each game variant, and it has saved me MANY headaches and frustrations. This game is full of bugs, anyone who bought this game should have known what they were getting in to. Amidst the bug-babble, though, this is one of the best games I have ever played, and will continue enjoying for its amazing replay value.

After hours of searching through the net for fixes i have found my desktop crash to freeze “but not for 5 seconds” and then exit, this person saying this brought something to my attension. When i bought left for dead every now and then it would freeze for 4-8 seconds, didn’t depend anything on computer performance, it was THE GAME. The only way Fallout 3 CRASH to desktop can be fixed IS WITH A PATCH, no simple fix can be found, bethesda needs to update the game and properly, without this the error will not be fixed.
Well we all now that there was this ”black isle studios” place which ”originaly” started fallout three but sadly it was cancelled. Then Bethesda stole it from them because they shut down most probably or it was just canceled. Well from my point of view if Black Isle Studios actually made fallout 3 they would have tested it and fixed the damn thing.
Anyway just in case people with the failed to initialize render problem want to use the skullptura fix it wont work.

I downloaded the game and it all went smooth.. i mounted with deamons tools and after it installs, the black screen takes over and it than soon closes… says “Fallout3 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. ” can someone help me?

I was unable to get Fallout 3 to function with my current setup of Vista Ultimate. I had never experienced a failure to install AND play a game on my computer prior to this.
I don’t have the most current computer (P4 3.2 ghz Single Core, 3 gb DDR2, 8500GT 512mb), and I’ve I tried all of the solutions mentioned here to no avail. While I could install and even update to v1.4, I could never get much past the black screen that CTD after launching the game. I suspected it had to do with various baggage that had been accumulated over the months since my last install of the o/s (about 18 months ago).
So I decided to reinstall XP on a separate drive.
After much hassle getting XP functioning again, with all drivers, I installed and launched F3 and was playing merrily along when F3 froze my system at the BB gun scene. I had to reboot to get out of it. I suspected it might have something to do (at this point) with my processor temperature.
So, I tore my computer apart and wiped my heat sink and processor clean of the former goo and reapplied the goo (Arctic Silver Ceramique). Lo and behold, the game now plays like a charm. 0 crashes in 20 hours.
The moral of the story: for freezing issues, check your processor temperature. F3 seems to be very sensitive to that.
BTW, it had no effect on my Vista installation; it still CTDs upon launch, sigh…
I suspect a clean install of Vista might have the same results, but I’m not willing to do THAT.

Hi, I seem to have a same problem as many others, but none have been able to solve my issue.
1st: when I install the game, it gives a “syntax error” related to “Microsoft Visual C++” programme. Reinstalling this does not help, nor removing nor anything else (tried it all). The game however installs itself even though of this error.
2nd: I try to start a new game, it downloads a little while then crashes. None of the aid above has solved this issue for me. I’ve tried ffdshow fix, windowed mode, all possible patches…
I have a laptop with double core, enough memory (4GB) and a decent graphics card. So, what the hell am I supposed to do with the game when it’s impossible to play it ?? I just bought Fallout 3. Seemed to install just fine. I get to the play screen and tell it to play. It sais that I am missing xlive.dll. I looked up several solutions. The most fitting one was just to install XLiveRedist01.02.0241.00 from the cd g4wl folder on the cd. I tried that and it said that the administrato has set policies to prevent this installation. So I look up solutions for that. They seem to be lacking in effectiveness. I went into msconfig and shut off startup items and all non-window policies and restarted the computer. Tried to install XLiveRedist01.02.0241.00 again with the same message. I shut off all windows policies except the windows installer and tried it that way. Same message. I defragged so that the virtual memory was contiguous. I added virtual memory to the partition that I was trying to install to just in case. I have tried a few other things but mostly they were smaller versions of the one I just mentioned. Please could someone help me. What is up with the poli

one is a windows vista 32 bit and the other is XP
On the laptop ( windows vista ) it works fine with a rare percentage of game crash
But on the computer ( with windows XP ) it randomly crashes specially on small rooms of the game
i do ctrl alt delete to finish task but sometimes the task list doesnt show up and i have to reboot my computer
Please help me with this bug !!! and the computer with the XP is way better than the laptop i play ( still the 2 play without lag ) but the PC with XP runs a bit faster

I first noticed that my Fallout3 was freezing after just getting out of the vault, and I was getting small freezing problems now and again, but they were of little significance. Now, every 10-20 minutes of gameplay, the game freezes, yet the sound continues until the current sound (A speech from Three Dog, Music etc) is finished, then it completely freezes up. Any help would be appreciated…

I have a Donwloaded version because the expansions are not available in the PS3, but when I try to start the Broken steel DLC the game freezes and everything that is realated to the DLC shows a Big red exclamation point and the weapons show this mensage PipOS error - 26 [File Not Found] . For the last two weeks i have been playing fallout three i hve come across both freezing and a c rash to the desktop with the Fallout three has stopped working messages. I have looked for the ffdshow folder but am unable to find it. I have my game installed on two computers, my first having a current system rating of 5.9 and even in all aspects and the other, with a 4.4 with at it’s weakest setting, prossesor. The first computer CONSTANTLY FREEZES and sometimes crashes to Desktop menu, while the 2nd, although it lasts longer, probably because it is on its lowest setting, will crash to desktop. What Going On
I uninstalled, then re-installed Fallout 3 without any patches and the same crashing problem persists. This is crazy, because I could play it for many hours or even days before any crashes occurred.
I think there are a few possible major culprits:
1. Windows Live
2. SecuROM
3. Code incompatible with latest graphics drivers
There’s no way that the problem is my rig. I play stacks of games all of the time on my current rig and they are all fine.

Ok posting again because I don’t think I was specific enough with my problem. I start Fallout3, and press “Play”. The screen goes black as if it’s loading then it crashes to desktop saying “Fallout 3 has stopped working, Windows is checking for a soulution to the problem” (yeah right). Fallout 3 won’t work at all for some reason! On the launcher screen when I click play, the game will attempt to load. It’s a black screen with the hour glass cursor in the middle. Then the game crashes to my desktop and the error meesage says “An error has been encountered and the program needs to shut down.” I have tried so many different solutions but non have wroked.

Then when i click play it seems like its loading put then the menu pops back up again I’m trying to play this game.

Hey everyone. I’m having a weird problem. I installed this game on another computer and it works perfectly. I got my own computer back today and installed it on there and I seem to have some audio issues. Well I think its just the audio. In the beginning at the birthing scene, it almost acts if the game skips the audio altogether and goes right to the choices. I can’t figure out what the problem is though. The people cannot talk at all, but it just skips right through like they never had anything to say at all and continues, like the dad walking away and then the birthday party scene. Does anyone have an idea why this is happening?
I am having the exact same problem as post 625. I dowloaded the game, it pulls up a window and it has the play option on the top. i pressed play, it has a black screen with a loading bar, then it says, “an error has been encountered and the program needs to shut down”. can someone please fix this for me? i have looked everywhere online, and nothing has helped me. thank you.
Found this posted on another site, thought someone here might benefit if it’s not posted already. This fix is designed to correct the problem fallout3 has with processors that have more than 2 cores:
Open up the fallout.ini file in: My Documents\My Games\Fallout3
Find the line:
bUseThreadedAI=0
change it to:
bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line after it and insert:
iNumHWThreads=2
This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.

my solution to the ‘failed to initialize renderer’ problem was: go to desktop settings en choose avanced. then you choose ’solve problem’ and put your hardwarespeed to maximum. (Sorry if there are wrong translations, but I always used the dutch version so I don’t know all the english terms.)

I have read everything you could about these freezes, and to list the “possible” causes would take up more space than this thread already takes up. Really, no one knows! The closes I came was a registry fix (either using CCleaner or regmechanic) and it would work for a lot longer, but eventually freeze.
First of all, the freeze I am having (and have had) has happened on XP, Vista 32, Vista 64 and windows 7, so I can rule out the OS being the problem.
The game has worked flawlessly before! For months on end on the SAME system (I did install new memory, but tested it and it is fine. Bad memory would also cause more problems than a game crashing). So its not hardware.
When I check the error logs windows is its usual helpful self in not giving me anything but numbers that when I look up on windows site, says “this error shows an application crashed” No kidding? Windows is of no help…
I did find out by lots of digging the error codes 1002 and 1001 (its what I saw in my error report) were caused by a bad registry entry. So I did a clean (I mean a Mr. Clean clean) install of the game on a new OS. Ran for ten minutes and froze. I ran CCleaner, and BAM, ran for a few months! I thought that was it, but it eventually froze (not in any particular part in the game or time from me starting, seems completely random). I then ran CCleaner again and it ran for about another month, now, I have run CCleaner and Regmechanic on it and it freezes a few seconds into gameplay.
No setting have changed or anything, so its something to do with the registry (and lord help and bless anyone who can find out what in the registry is causing it). here is my frustration, what didnt work:
- There is no ffdshow folder for me, thanks.
- I put windows sound to 2.1 (even bought a new 2.1 speaker system) and ensured the game was not on surround, no dice.
- A clean reinstall will not work, unless it was installed improprerly to begin with. Besides, who wants to reinstall a game because it freezes? Sure you can save your saves, but its a hastle, thats not a legitimate solution.
So, use CCleaner and good luck. Check your error logs that windows keeps, you might have mor einformation!

Ok, the start up wizard comes up, i do all the information, then the game starts to download, but after only like 4 files are downloaded it just stops. Fixing Glitch after Child born in opening..
Well i have surf net ,test and trial for 8 hours just to get it done . So i share my experience to whom have problem with it.
1.I never reinstall cos i think its non needed.
2.Download .net framework 3.5 only not the full sp1 and install ( other version i think u need to uninstall )A must.
3.Check registries keys in regedit in START box. HKEY_local_machine/software/bethesda softwork/fallout3
there in right panel “installpath” check it where it install it to your right drives. If the game install in C should read c:\program files\fallout 3 ..if not just change the drive wherever u install the game.
This is for game launcher to work on click play button.
4.I am using 9800 GT series so ..the best is driver fir fallout 3 is nvidia 180.48 after certain trial on others driver version.
Then restart your pc. On fallout launcher , option , set as default and click to play. If Success then u can change the setting u prefer and relaunch again .
I have try on 3 pc which on vista ultimate sp1 32bit, Xp sp1-2-3 , other vista version 32bit. 64bit might worth a try.
So there u go …hope my solution here and my wasted time effort will enlighten for u all.

How to get Patch on Asia Version to Us version( for asia version only )
Not recommended but do it in your own state.
For those who might have purchase originals Asia Version and after all the installation and tested the game work and able to login in window live once game start.
Here goes.
1. You need a non original Fallout 3 Us version .
2. Unsintall the original Asia version game only.Restart Pc.
3. Install the non ori. us version fallout 3.
Important Do not install the window live stated in your Non Ori.CDs as u have the previous original updated window lives or it might not work.Crack it,you know the stuff.
4.Type regedit in start/find button. HKEY_local_machine/software/bethesda softwork/fallout3
there in right panel “installpath” check it where it install it to your right drives. If the game install in C should read c:\program files\fallout 3 ..if not just change the drive wherever u install the game.
This is for game launcher to work on click play button.
5.Launch game ..and login to window live as usual ( it will shown as normal as u play original version) and automatically install patches upgrades to Us version.Cos u have a original retail that u have register in LIVE.
Its just a temporary solution for us asia retails player which o not have a single patch release by beth and needed to play on operation anchorage or further release of fallout 3.
You might need to reinstall the original if the asia patch is out … weelll till then… lets play

Considering yours pc specs is a gaming machine.
Please check your CPU usage in task manager. Cause Vista is well known to have a bug causing CPU stupidly run 100% suddenly. (in my case when open to do some copying mods to fallout data files )For me i just restart and play the game.

Hmmm maybe you need to check also for the codecs … as nero and roxio is sux for fallout 3 causing sound glitch and slow framerates .
Delete those if you have one. And reinstall new codecs.
Recommended is CCCP ( i am using ) - tested very less freeze in games.
K-Lite Codecs is okay - tested not as good as CCCP
I installed CCCP and noticed no change at all. The menues like the pip boy and main work perfectly but gameplay is still impossible. I could’nt find a task manager just a task schedualer, are they the same thing?
Vista u need to CTRL ALT + DEL key then select start task manager.

So here i concluded the fix on fallout 3 which i again wasted my time due for knowledge and satisfaction.
I has used on tis fix on my gaming pc and other test bed pc also which has problem.

Before start .. Please make sure that ypur pc system requirement are compatible with FALLOUT 3 or it will not work.

1. Usually cause by manual patch which are not match with your FO3 region version .

3.Try to install the original WIndow Lives
Freeze or hang on BAby opening ..please see post 654.

1.Nero,Roxio,FFdshow is a BIG nono for FO3. Delete them.
Install CCCP recommended . K-lite codes is good but need adjustment.
2.Make sure your Dx9.0c is properly install.
3.Check registries keys in regedit in START box. HKEY_local_machine/software/bethesda softwork/fallout3
there in right panel “installpath” check it where it install it to your right drives. If the game install in C should read c:\program files\fallout 3 ..if not just change the drive wherever u install the game.
This is for game launcher to work properly .
4.Framework 3.5 recommemded.
5.In Fallout.ini files ( located in mydoc/my games/fallout3. )
Change the BuseThreadAI 0 to 1
Add another line and insert
iNumHWThreads=2
5. Turn off your UAC ( User Account Control )while installing.( recommended also while playing )
6.Update your audio driver. Mine Realtek R224 best.
7.Make sure your install Fallout3 drives has at least 20GB space.
7.Close all unuse menu in task bar and folders while playing.
8.For MODS please make sure your modding files is compatible with other mods.Not reccommended to open all mods while playing.My case max is 3 mods. (( dun be greedy ))

So there it is ..before above fixes my FO3 really cant play.
Now it is good and seldom freeze.
I admit it not 100% solution but at least help making the game playable and reduce hanging.
Do not compare other games with FO3 as they are different game engines.
FO3 is well known a picky game to tolerant with your pc software and hardware.
Hope it will help you all.
Advice : U still need to Quick save oftenly just in case.
Test the fix one by one ..be patient..until you are there
Please consider on new update software or installation new things in your pc….who knows your Fallout3 may not like it.

i can get to the launch screen with the play, options, etc buttons, but when i click play i get an error message that says “The ordinal 5360 could not be located in the dynamic link library xlive.dll”. I get this same error when i try to update to version 1.7. I’ve tried a lot of possible fixes, including the one on their tech support page, but nothing has worked. any ideas are appreciated.

there’s a few hot fix’s for net framework from Microsoft downloads.
I would suggest getting all the updates for net-framework first.
and there is no ffdshow folder .
you would need to install a UI utitility like

and then add fallout3.exe to the ffdshow excluded list.
when I try to start the game it freezes, and I don’t have this ffdshow folder but when I search for the ffdshow in the start menu it shows me “Configure ffdshow audio codes” and when I open it it dose not show like what is written in problem#2
My F3 started crashing lately. Not CTD, but BLUE SCREEN and RESTART crash. Sometimes after couple of mins, other times shorter…Patched to 1.7, no fddshow, latest drivers, the works. No dice. Used to have 2Gb ram(only crashed couple of times) then got 2 more Gb, and now crash often. Any ideas?

OK, Ive been playing Fallout 3 for a long time, like almost did everything and discovered all points. All of a sudden it will freeze when i click anything that pertains to loading, Like continue, new game, or load from the list. It just freezes and locks up. WTF? JUST FYI……Along with computers stats mention if you have mods running in the back-ground-even The Pitt etc. Then please tell us what mods by name, you do have running. Even if you believe it is not the mod or mods. I had a crash to desktop problem and it was a mod-(1alexscorpionsnipergear)great weapons mod but it was clashing with a (weap_Overhaul_RTH)mod. So to figure out mod problems and crashes////pull off all mods and then put them back on one at a time and then add another until it crashes. (((By Pulling off I just mean uncheck the mod in the start up menu-don’t erase. Multi-mods can sometimes clash with each other and then crash the game in weird ways…… SOOO Mention if you have mods and which are they!!!!!!—-Then I found programs running in the background can slow down my game and even crash it…my own graphics card nvidia 9800GT SLI—-had a dump program running in the background that I deleted off the background with the task manager? Before I play I take off almost everything in the background running. Take one off at a time play and then go back again……not fun it works. Good Luck

Make a short cut of the system Information on your desk top. Click on software application this tells you any errors or software conflicts (also make sure you open hidden files and folders, this may help you find something else to mess with to screw the game up more?

I’ve tried pretty much every single thing to get the game to stop CTD. Only one thing worked: Shutting off AA and AF. I hate how the game look without both of them on, but I hate when the game CTD somewhere between 20min-2h.

SAME thing happened to me on fallout 3 and few other games….just go right click on fallout 3 icon on desktop and then properties then compability than disable visual themes. It fixed my game.

I experienced the crash regularly for the quest “take it back”, “report to Owyn Lyon”, in the Citadel. After handing in the the modified FEV, latest after conversation to his daughter, the screen freezed and turned into black (playing in windows mode). I could not exit the game, but I had to reboot the system. Checking/adding fallout3.exe in “don’t use ffdshow” (audio and video) in a codec-program or in e. g. MPCSTAR mediaplayer (I had installed before) has not solved the problem - only delayed it. After deinstalling MPCStar mediaplayer, rebooting the system and deactivating the firewall and antivirus (despite the fact that Fallout 3.exe an Launcher.exe was given the status of being excused before) and without running the Firefox-browser before, I could continue the game (I went up/followed the BOS-comrades immediatately up the stairs as soon as I could move my character again, after the conversation with Sarah Lyons, before the program displayed the completion of the current quest and the quest to be done now (waiting for this confirmation without moving as soon as possible turned into system crash again). These problems only ocurred for the quest “Take it back” (in windowed mode) in the labaratory of the citadel. I only tried this once. Hope this can help.

I experienced regular crashs (ctd) when loading a game (message that a problem occured and fallout 3 must be shut down). Loading the same save again after the crash was successful. During the game, it crashed everytime I entered a house in Megaton. This has not happened again, since I have playe FO 3 in window mode.
An annoying crash occured always at the same situation (main quest “take it back”). After handing in the modified FEV to Lyon the game crashed. I had no codec-program installed, but ffdshow is part of the MPCStar mediaplayer. Configuring ffdshow video an audio not to be used for Fallout 3 has not solved the problem - only delayed (game crashed during the conversation with Sarah after talking to Lyon).
After deinstalling MPCStar, deactivating firewall and antivrus program (despite the fact, that Fallout 3 was given free to firewall and excused from virus scanning etc.) this crash did not occur again (I tried this only once). I also shifted the hardware accelaration (default maximum) for sound
one mark to the right (System control/sounds/speaker extended/system output).
But I did have not expierienced that kind of serious crashs as written in this forum.
Maybe fallout has also a problem with dual, triple or quad core CPU’s. Maybe it can help, e. g. for AMD multi core cpu’s to install the AMD optimizer programs for the appropriate AMD-family from the AMD-website (that helped to prevent crashs with another PC-game called Gothic 2).

So about after days of playing through the game on my PS3, all of a sudden 90% of peoples’ dialog get skipped. For some reason, this results in the subtext also gets skipped.
Now, I have NO IDEA what people are saying to me.
I restarted the game, and things seemed to be working OK. Well, until I got to about level 17 or maybe a little before. The same thing happenes. I really don’t remember what level I was at the first time around, but it seems like it’s about the same.
I played through the game totally differently, did different quests, etc. So it really does seem to be related to either level or game time played.
Travis…sorry bout your problem. Are you running any mods etc. did it happen after any mods? F3 was made for xbox. I have only heard of a few probs from my friends with xbox. Us PC gammers and PS2 are getting killed here. I don’t know if anyone here could or would help you? It’s mostly PC and PS2 here? But hang in there……….

jon, lol It never ends does it? Nice system by the way, microsoft even calls that screen.. The Blue Screen of Death, BSOD. Same thing happened to me in Anchorage. It did not like one of my mods…it was Alexanders Gun Mod? Once I started taking one mod of at a time I found which on it was. I had modded a few guns myself and found Anchorage didn’t like my mods. So I had to mod weapons specifically for Anchorage. Anchorage has its own guns and does not allow even guns from basic FS. Just and Idea good luck let me know?

Im having a problem while im running a trainer in fallout 3( the version of game is updated to v.1.7.0.3 same as the trainer) but the problem is that im entering the game but while im playing the game,game just drops and appears the black sceen and it says “dont send, send error”report, (only appears while im playing with trainers). I have tryed fixing this with different patches cause i thought that it was fault of version(s), but i got dissapointed when this error appeard in every kind of patches. Ok,here it is.This is one of sites that this theme isnt closed.Its just still living and i spent hours and days trying to get fix somehow.Like month or 2 ago i installed fallout 3 played it finished game was happy about it , now when i install it and try to play it crashes at start.I installed 1.5 patch (both versions since i wasnt sure what on was right) then crashing at start was avoided but now in game when i finish goat and all those crappy things when u need to leave vault game just randomly lock up (freeze-what ever i can call it).Cant do anything except alt+f4,ctrl+alt+del and kill process.Same thing happened one 1.7 version

for some reason my control mapping for the buttons is messed up. whenever i try to attack the button in the mapping turns into the dashed line and when i try to change it it doesnt do anything
Can anyone help me, I played fallout 3 before, finished game, and delete it. But now when I downloaded Fallout 3 reloaded and patch it with 1.7 official patch I have problem. It is not crashes, everything is ok til I get in vault 101 hall where you see 2 vault residence killed by guards. Then game star “freezes”. At first they are like this: You got “screenshot” for some 15 sec, and game continues, but throw next 20 mint the freezes are more common, they are randomly, and some tomes they stop for some 2-3 min, then come back. So this is pretty anoying in fight scenes, and in leveling up.

Just a note: I bought the GOTY version and it would not install on my PC. It got to the point where it was installing the textures.bsa then generate a CRC error saying the medium I’m using is corrupt. I see a lot of thes problem in online forums without solutions. I tried everything recommended that I could find, but no avail. I tried bringing the game back to where I bought it, but they would only exchange it. SO I did that, then brought it home…same thing CRC error! As a last ditch effort, I decided to upgrade the firmware on my DVD drive. After I flashed the DVD drive to a newer version. The game installed and worked great. —Then I found out to prevent the ‘new’ blue screen crashes I was getting, I had to stop the ASUS smart doctor untility from running. Now, it runs fine.

I have the GOTY edition, everytime I exit the vault, Visual C++ Runtime Error occurs, I tried everything, and discovered that closing multmedia class scheduler works but there will be no sound on the computer. But I want to play with sounds, anybody have any idea? thanks
