Hey i can’t seem to install the patch here. I own the US version of Fallout 3, and running the 1.0.0.15 US patch gives me this error :

Old file not found. however, a file of the same time was found. no update done since file contents do not match

    anyone got past this error?

  2. KCPTECH — November 7, 2008 @ 12:54 pm

I get the same error. It appears that even their Patches need some sort of testing before release too. I’ve tried the patch on the US version of the DVD as well as the updated exe from SecuROM. Get the same error on both. The patch does appear to modify some files in the Windows System folder through the Command BOX; however, it doesn’t do anything to the Game exe or anything in the directory.

    I have found the primary issues causing the CTD and other crashes. I’ve sent 3 e-mails to Bethesda and no responses. My Computer Science Engineering department took a shot it. I purchased 320 copies and gave them the weekend to figure it out. Here are some of the results;

1.) Fallout 3 Installer installs an older version on C++ Visual 2005 that appears to affect the way the vidcard driver communicates with the game.

2.) Fallout 3 Installer installs a Beta release of DOTNETFX3.0 (.NET Framework 3.0). For users of .NET Framework 3.0 SP1 or even SP2 (Service Pack of the Framework not the OS), upon restarting their system (when changes take place), their game will be quite unstable.
Users of .NET 3.5 or Vista should have even more random crashes.

3.) Fallout 3 Installer installs a non Plug’n Play DRM device manager (not driver but a manager) that doesn’t like any 3rd party codecs (ie K-Lite, WinAMP, etc) and will usually see a CTD when a Hardware codec comes online. This usually occurs when interactive audio (client controlled speech) initializes (ie baby walking to daddy).

    4. Fallout 3 Installer installs SecuROM Root kit as well as 8 hidden non Plug’n play virtual drivers. Owners with more than one Optical drive or a sata drive may encounter random drive access issues. Also, Imaging software or any software that may use its own ASPI drive (ie NERO, Roxio, Daemon, ISO, etc.) will have one of the 8 virtual drivers causing the system to do a random CTD. Reason why clients using a cracked EXE don’t experience the same volume of CTD as those who bought the game. However, the SecuROM root kits are still on the system and active. Once the SecuROM is also purged from the system, 60% of the crashes disappear. Unfortunately, they must remain on the system in order to play the game as they are part of the EULA.

5.) Fallout 3 also has its own built in MP3 codec coupled to its DRM to protect MP3’s on the DVD (in game). Unfortunately, the codec was never tested fully with hardware decoders like those of an X-FI. This can be varied by the lack of a hardware audio switch in the game options.

6.) Fallout 3 has 14 memory leaks that we found. Most are small, but there are a few that are quite large. Some areas of the map, the memory counter just spins at over 100 MB/sec. Most memory leaks are around 5 to 10 MB/sec.

7.) Fallout 3 video graphics buffer needs to be adjustable in the options and an automatic cache purger installed for cards over 512 MBs as well as linked buffers from SLI and crossfire cards. I’ve seen areas where names on the screen start to disappear and all you see are “Input Text Here” instead of V.A.T.S. or range or etc. The cache doesn’t get dumped on some maps. Most games dump their cache when a map reload occurs. This can be noticed when fast reloads occurs from map changes. Most users will just see their graphics card run out of memory (CTD and stuttering).

8.) Most games were fault free with a basic XP Pro SP2 reload, and only Critical updates and latest stock drivers. Installed the game and played it error free for nearly 4 days. Upon a system restart, lots of errors showed up. This means that Fallout 3 significantly changes the operating system. Far beyond reasonable accounts as all you can do with the system in not to play MP3’s, watch movies, make a CD or DVD, or play other games.

Hopefully, Bethesda will address the issues more than 100,000 people are having.

  3. Sheriff Mayor — November 7, 2008 @ 2:25 pm

off topic : wtf KCP, 320 copies?

anyway, it’s good to know that I’m not the only one getting that error. wonder if bethesda’s site just got hacked and someone uploaded those fake patch since there are like, $300million worth of fallout sales and a fraction of that are PC users waiting for patches.

    *gasps in horror*

  4. Radical — November 7, 2008 @ 2:42 pm

    yup, getting the same one…

  5. Boppel — November 7, 2008 @ 5:38 pm

    yapp, same error.
you know what? This really sucks. A super-duper game with such gay bugs is really lame, i hate that! Like Gothic III or such stuff. Why couldnt Blizzard made Fallout3, there wouldn’t be any major bugs.

Still, I tried all fixes that are posted on the internet, like Codecs, running in windowed mode, using fixes made by some player etc etc. Nothing worked!

This really sucks, and Bethesda is really lame!

  6. SKINZ — November 7, 2008 @ 9:27 pm

If the game is bought thrugh steam does steam update it or does the patch coz the patch isnt working for me, bummer

  7. Daniel — November 8, 2008 @ 1:31 am

I played just fine for four days on my PC and now I am experiencing random CTD and one incredibly annoying repeatable error. Every single time I enter the VATS system now I do not get any targets and everything slows to a CRAWL. If I do not immediately hit ESC and reload my last game then I am stuck. The game doesn’t stall but it will never let me leave VATS, or even target anything.

What a totally f**king gay game.

  8. VLawless — November 8, 2008 @ 3:13 am

I want to thank you for sharing this information, I waited a year for this game, and now that I paid my money I have a piece of crap that I cannot enjoy. My problem is this, I finally bought a decent computer with a quad core intel 2.6ghz processor 2 invidia 9600gt video cards in SLI mode 4GB of stealth RAM I got a cooling fan for the cpu and a big ole fan installed in the case, Oh and I also got Vista pro 64, a 10,000 rpm 150gb hard drive and a second 500GB sony hard drive before I had an 80gig drive! The first game I installed was Call of Duty 4 and it played beautifully, then I had Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 2 and Vegas 2. I had problems in multiplayer with graphics going crazy with Vegas 2 but I did not care, because the 50 or so other games I had that I could not download on my old Compaq Presario with 2.0ghz cpu and 80Gig drive I was able to on my new quad core Vista machine. Company of Heroes and World in Conflict and Just Cause I was able to not only play these games but more fluidly and with more intense graphics. Not long ago I bought Far Cry 2 and it worked perfectly but I was still looking forward to Fallout 3, I figured Bethesda made Oblivion Elder Scrolls 4 so the game was in good hands. Then I purchase it and discover they linked the game with games for Windows Live and you need online activation, no problem, I had access but when I sit down to play the game after the download and I reach level 9 the screen freezes and my hard drive starts running continually and the keyboard will not respond to any input. I turn the power off to reboot the machine, pop the game in the disc drive and go again , to make a long ordeal shorter for the readers sake I have tried various solutions playing the game in a window, down grading the settings, patching but so far I still end up with my game screen freezing, the keyboard locks up and the hard drive starts to spin and spin and spin.
Its just comforting and reassuring to know I am not alone with this miserable letdown by Bethesda. Maybe the losers will fix this, if they do not, this is one PC gamer who will never and I mean never buy one of their game titles as long as I live and breathe on this Earth.

  9. D — November 8, 2008 @ 5:45 am

its not our systems..and its not like our systems cant handle this game..because the overal textures arent that great anyway..just go close to a wall or whatever and look how crappy the textures actually look.and i havent checked it myself but i heard from others that oblivion axctually looks better in some ways then fallout 3.seems like they just wanted to make the characters very lifelike and while playing on ULTRAHIGH quality *cough* it still seems the textures date back from 2004.But that this game keeps crashing over and over no matter what kind of system you got..it still crashes..it even crashes on ps3 and xbox 360..dev’s on this game just fucked up big time. But Please..dont be so surpired to see less people actually go out and Buy a game knowing it will crash anyway…i downloaded the patch and i dont even get to install it because the version is different ? i uninstalled EVerything..Fresh windows..Installed fallout 3 and the patch ..and it still said the file is different..while i downloaded the right patch..agh screw it anyway…im losing interest in this game becaause of this major fuckup, and dont see myself playing it or Buying a game from bethesda again soon. (now i mention it…i remember when oblivion just came out it had the same sort of errors?) why do you people keep bringing out games that dont fucking work proparly!!?

  10. KCPTECH — November 8, 2008 @ 11:04 am

As for the copies, it’s actually not much for what they are used for. The University at where I do some work has over 32,000 students. About 10% of that are enrolled in computer related studies. It was proposed about 5 years ago that the facilty support their computer students by offering them a game to play in their spare time to help enhance their appreciation as well as creative development within the field of PC Hardware design. Online games were pretty much the winner as we can usually get what is ordered. I pushed for Fallout 3 do to its unique AI engine as well as multi-platform support. I believe 2,880 copies of Fallout 3 were ordered, but the regional supplier was limited to 1,000 copies of which they had to share with 3 cities (WTF I thought). Unfortunately, the game was bugged so badly it put me in a bad position. I made my recommendation on the reviews of the Engi copy of the game. However, the release is no where near stable.

  11. Starmonger — November 8, 2008 @ 12:16 pm

KCPTECH, very good info from you. I like what you have done, it seems very clever that these students have found so many causes of bugs, its like they’re beta testing! I have a decent rig: q6600@3.3, 4870×2, 4gig ram and vistax64. I do get the od CTD, but the thing that annoys me is this annoying memory leak thing- When i load the game at first its completely smooth, but after a while playing it gets pretty jerky. I guess this could be due to having a beast card with tons of video memory and the issues with that you mentioned. Anyway, other than this the game seems pretty cool.

  12. D — November 8, 2008 @ 3:51 pm

I have a single 9600GT ( wich is an Excellent card for the price btw ) amd athlonX2 5200+( only thing that sets me back a Little),4gb memory, vista 32bit,and i can run crysis, mass effect , assasins creed,Farcry 2,soldier of fortune payback etc etc on highest settings possible and ALL games i play run smooth as hell and i dont encounter any problem with my system. When i was playing Fallout i experienced No lag or jerkiness at all with all settings maxed out ( except AA turned off cause ive read it could cause problems or extreme framedrops) but the game just keeps on crashing very Randomly..not just in one specific spot.If the game crashes i usually get an error warning and im back to desktop, but sometimes i experience crashes wich actually reboots my pc ( although i have the setting Automaticly reboot on error Disabled), then i watch my temps immediatly to see if thats maybe the case but no problems there. If i start the game after the crash i can usually play for another hour or so..untill the next crash..sometimes it just takes a couple of minutes. And if i try to install the patch ( even doing so after a Fresh windows install it keeps on saying the file is different and nothing will be updated).Something is Very wrong with this game ( and bethesda because i remember a similair problem with oblivion)..its not the graphics because the textures ( maybe you think differently ) look like they come from 2004..only thing that impresses me graphicwise..are the lightning, shading, and characters..the rest just looks horrible to me..especially comparing to games such as farcry 2,mass effect etc( wich all run smooth).Anyway..With trying every fix possible ive read on these forums and others..and with no luck on the patching progress..im about to give up all hope on this game.

  13. Sarevock — November 8, 2008 @ 9:29 pm

    Same fcking error……….

    THIS SUCKS

  14. Thresh — November 9, 2008 @ 3:21 am

Yeah I have pretty much the same sad tale. I really think that it is a sorry state of affairs where a software developer can sell a dud to so many unsuspecting consumers and face no adverse consequences. In fact the cover-up in the media about the massive number of bugs with this game ensures that more suckers are roped in daily and pissing their hard earned cash away on a product that simply does not function. I say hang em high.

  15. Mr. Pirate — November 9, 2008 @ 3:46 am

For those with the “Old file not found” error,

have you guys noticed that when you got your hands on the RELOADED version, nothing in the readme (or the file itself) tells you to crack the game first?

That’s because RELOADED screwed up and pre-cracked the freaking game… So stop blaming bethesda for this and start growing a brain.

    Sheesh.

PS: The only solution FOR NOW, is to try and find the ORIGINAL fallout.exe somewhere or wait for someone to come out with a manual way to install the patch. but seriously, imo, this patch suck donkey balls

For the rest with GENUINE problems AFTER patching the game, Good for you, continue voicing out your displeasures at bethesda for coming out with such a kooky patch. hopefully that would wake them monkey butts up!

  16. Kilroy — November 9, 2008 @ 5:06 am

Hey Mr.Pirate, where did anyone mention that they were using the RELOADED version of the game? I believe they mentioned they were using RETAIL versions, not cracked versions.

Start growing a brain and learn to read before spouting off.

  17. joe — November 9, 2008 @ 8:57 am

ive read in so many places that bethesda fucked the pooch on this one, i now dont feel so bad that im experiencing the same problems as you guys are!!! i guess we will only be able to play this game when the lazy fuckers at bethesda make a patch that WILL ACTUALLY FIX THE PROBLEMS so all of us will probably have to wait 4-5 months before we will be able to enjoy this great game

  18. 2d — November 9, 2008 @ 8:35 pm

7.) “Fallout 3 video graphics buffer needs to be adjustable… Most users will just see their graphics card run out of memory (CTD and stuttering)”.
Yeah, i have the same problem, i run it on overclocked 8800GTS and performane rapidly slows down after few minutes of playing…try to lower graph. settings but its the same, only its buy me a little more time to point that i must restar the game…you mentioned the “automatic cache purger” can it be downloaded from net somewhere? trying to google it bun no luck…thanks

  19. Krotchy — November 10, 2008 @ 4:10 am

Fallout 1 and 2 were both epic games and Bethesda raped them when they made F3. What’s wrong with these people? It was the story and game tactics that makes Fallout one of the best titles in game history. Fallout 3 is a one big bug hive. After I managed to finally run F3 (xlive.dll problem, dx problem, ffd show problem) the game crashed like 30 times during the last two evenings of playing. Oh, and another thing – the game always CTDs when it’s not daytime and outside the Wastes (must use WAIT option).

  20. Kromus — November 10, 2008 @ 10:05 am

Hey just wanted to say I really liked the review…. my only comment is… I run Vista Ultimate w/ 3gb ram X2 3800 with HD 3870 512mb and I’ve only ever had 1 crash…. ( happened when I changed the Hud and Pipboy colours to Blue)… Other than that.. I’ve noticed the slowdowns in areas… but I haven’t had any other problems…

  21. GunzxSword — November 10, 2008 @ 4:02 pm

I love Fallout 3. It’s totally grabbed me. But it’s Bethesda’s wasteland… and, a fan of the previous games, I can’t help but wish they’d called their game anything but Fallout 3.

  22. Clydefrog — November 11, 2008 @ 5:43 am

It’s the random crashes that Bethesda should be making a patch for. The game often CTDs on entering a specific area (some places become inaccesable) or on turning evening outside. Also the save gets corrupted now and then – even when you could move through the area without a CTD, it still crashes on loading. Some can be bypassed by using the WAIT option. My brother noticed that changing apparel helps on some locations. Maybe the vault suits trigger actions that cause CTDs. Game rocks but still is a fuckup.

  23. D — November 11, 2008 @ 11:21 am

This is a working fix,i tested it myself and played for 3 hours straight without a single crash. And before i applied this fix i crashed about every 10 minutes. Its no official patch or fix from Bethesda but its from Skullptra, so all credit goes out to him, this is the link to the Torrentfile , its a 16mb file and after downloading Install Exactly like this > INSTRUCTIONS (tested on WinXP and Vista32bit):
Copy the “start_ffix.bat” into your Fallout 3 game folder (NOT into one of the subfolders!). Then copy all nine files from the Final Fix “DATA” folder into the Fallout 3 “DATA” folder(DONT replace the whole folder). Finally start the “start_ffix.bat”. After that the install will take a long time,on my system it took about an hour and a half, but its worth it.If you want to play Fallout 3 without crashes or whatevr problem you got you have to try out this fix!!Goodluck and have fun playing without a crash.

  24. D — November 11, 2008 @ 11:22 am

Oops i forgot the link XD here it is http://btjunkie.org/torrent/Fallout-3-FinalFix-Skullptura/39525f31840f7177734de71eea183e0e22c2f6e37f48

  25. Clydefrog — November 11, 2008 @ 8:46 pm

Thanks for the comment, D! I’ve installed the Skullptura’s fix before, but on a different computer (couldn’t run F3) and it took about 4 hours to install. I didn’t have the calm to wait another four to install it again. If it fixes the wastes exterior CTDs that would be great! It’s pretty lame for Bethesda that the guys that cracked the game make fixes for Fallout 3 before Bethesda can even make a decent patch. :/

  26. D — November 11, 2008 @ 9:43 pm

Clydefrog if you have a computer that can run Fallout 3 i highly recommend applying this fix and just sit out the wait.Last night i let my game running while my character was standing in town, all night while i was asleep..i woke up and the game was still there..thats 8 hours straight and no crash! And yes its terrible that Bethesda cant even figure this out and a cracker can actually fix this game with a small 16 mb file.

  27. Clydefrog — November 12, 2008 @ 4:27 am

I’ve finally got to that damned radio station and only had one crash beyond that. I’ve finally got to enjoy the game enough to notice how sweet it is. It’s definately Fallout! Great time running around a supermutant and shooting his legs with a pistol in
VATS. I have a feeling that it won’t be long until the game starts crashing again, so the Skullptura’s fix is the best bet, thanks again, D! I noticed that F3 runs smoothly beyond the metro and in/around Rivet. Seems all the problems occur around Megaton.

  28. hoooong — November 12, 2008 @ 8:47 pm

which is why i pirated fallout 3, but bought the original f1 and f2 from interplay, at the same time. it is the best way to show bethesda how i love them if they just wont listen to me.

  29. Ulrick — November 13, 2008 @ 7:47 am

    Hi,

I also have crashes every few minutes. What I found (I don’t know if this could be useful to someone) is that after installation of fallout 3, VLC is n longer working correctly. Some AVI files have audio distorted. I tried to reinstall VLC, but the issue remains. Let’s hope someone find the solution.

  30. D — November 13, 2008 @ 10:39 am

Ulrick..if you have read the entire post and all comments you must have read that there is a working fix made by SKullptra..i have given the link..ive tested it and Clydefrog used it aswell. It is a working fix..scroll back up and read my comment on how to get it and on how to install it properly.

  31. Clydefrog — November 16, 2008 @ 7:53 pm

It started crashing again. :/ The fix is great, but there still are some areas that CTD (northern part of the map, apparently). I also noticed that the storyline is extremely dull and boring. Only the sidequests seem to be interesting. The more I play it the less I like it. And what is this about Bethesda making Fallout 4? Why don’t they finish the third part first!? Bunch of assholes. Someone said that in a big game like F3 crashes are inevitable. Well, I don’t remember GTA SA or Operation Flashpoint CTD!

  32. me of u — November 16, 2008 @ 11:20 pm

i have vista 32 bit, nvidia geforce 8400m and 4 gigs ram but the game keeps cashing for me!! i got the patch and the skulluptura fix but its not werkin!!!! halp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. Clydefrog — November 17, 2008 @ 1:06 am

When does it crash – at start, on entering a new location or randomly? If on start, then it’s probably the ffd show thing.

  34. suske — November 17, 2008 @ 10:39 am

this is sad. i spent good money for this game and every hour i get a hard reboot. seems to happen on loading to outside areas a lot. wish i had just pirated it. it isnt worth the money.

  35. Clydefrog — November 17, 2008 @ 8:54 pm

Well, I was wondering why they add the ”I’ve been f*cked by Bethesda” bumper sticker to every Fallout 3 collectors edition. ;P I’ve read somewhere that the russian F3 doesn’t crash at all. Seems that they fixed the bugs when they translated it. And yes, you can choose to install it in english. There’s also a Polish version which is bugged as hell and can’t be patched since it’s not in english. xD Gotta love Bethesda.

  36. arek — November 18, 2008 @ 9:52 am

Kurwa! Wiedzia?em ?e jak sobie kupie Fallout 3 legalnie to zostane ukarany. Teraz mam nauczk?, by takich g?upot wi?cej nie robi?. Polska wersja zwyczajnie kurwa nie dzia?a.

  37. D — November 18, 2008 @ 10:50 am

Arek…why do you post something in polish when you see everyone else is talking english? Anyway Clydefrog..your right about this game being boring. But i had the same thing with oblivion..that game really really really bored the hell out of me..i was hoping for some difference with this game..but actually its exactly the same as oblivion..but with guns.I havent even played this game for a couple of days now..i had the same with assasins creed, mass effect etc..games arent just want they used to be..i remember playing FF7 on ps1..Damn,i could play it all day long..but these Next Gen games..i dunno..it looks good and all but im missing something..

  38. Wildy — November 22, 2008 @ 4:35 am

Fallout 3 keeps crashing fairly regularly on my computer – sometimes within a couple of minutes of starting it. But I’ve noticed the crashes (for me) only occur out in the wastelands, but never inside other places (like the starter vault, Megaton, any houses with their own cells etc).

After several crashes I got tired of it and tried to run Call of Duty 4 instead, but -that- crashed with an “Out of video memory”-error. A reboot fixed that right up, but it made me wonder if most of the CTDs happen because the game eats up all of the video card memory. I’ve no idea how to fix that, though.

In another bug, the entire game world went completely and utterly pitch black, but the VATS system and the HUD still worked just fine – you simply couldn’t see a damn thing. I noticed it had just then hit 8 PM in the game, maybe the time transition to nighttime went wrong somehow? That also happened in the wastes.

I hope there will be an in-depth patch for these problems. The game is awesome but really hard to enjoy until it’s stable!

  39. Remmington — November 22, 2008 @ 10:01 pm

Heya all, I like you all are very dispondant with Fallout 3, however I actually managed to play thought on a good charachter, was a quick run through (not too much wandering around) and only had minimal crashes. Now however since clocking the game i simply cannot run the game at all! I have tried re-installing but nothing works, it simply wont load! WTF and I fully think Bethsda need to own up large for this balls up! got fed up and started playing WAR, now theres a good game! lol

  40. Rycas — November 22, 2008 @ 11:38 pm

Lets just keep adding bad comments: I didn’t even knew why my system crashed.
Played Oblivion (+ shivering Isles) perfectly
    Played Bioshock perfectly
    and I don’t even have a 2gb ram pc!!!
But this game just keeps crashing. Everything OK in vault 101 but beyond that…
Luckily I know now that it’s not my pc but the creators of the game itself who messed up.
(knowing that I trusted Bethesda after releasing Oblivion, tsss)
They must take action soon, verry soon, or they will get baaad reports on those d#mn official game-sites. :-S
Let’s go complain there. Maybe that’ll get their nutshells working faster.
    Good day everybody!!

  41. acolyte — November 23, 2008 @ 12:23 pm

Interesting, I’ve played 25+ hours (roughly split between my desktop and laptop) and have only had one crash in game (on the laptop). *shrug*

    Desktop: core 2 duo 3ghz (e8400), 2x 8800GT, 4gb ram, vista 64
    Laptop: core 2 duo 2.16ghz, go 7900gs, 2gb ram, vista 32

  42. Drew_Blud — November 23, 2008 @ 8:38 pm

Scrap this! I am going to go dig up and play Fallout 1 & 2 again… Until the next legendary epic, once in a lifetime title comes out. Then I’m gonna wait more then a decade for a bunch of executives and producers and investors to play tug’o'war with the franchise until it is ripped to shreds, stitched back together with the wrong material from the wrong planet & rushed onto shelves, ‘complete with stuffing coming out the sides’, for the sake of satisfying stake holders (and just in time for Xmas).

*Along with minimum specifications, Game packaging should also read:- Get real excited for months & months. Get the cash together. Go to the store. Know what you want. Get it. Go home. Do a little “this is gonna be so good” ritual, ie. Prepare the tea & or coffee. The Tim Tams. #@%*ing jam roulette’s. Whatever. Install. Play for ten minutes. Crash. Repeat process until you get the hint. Search the web. Research. Find others like you. Read their s#@t! Laugh at a few funny things people have to say. Get the feeling you are having more fun on the forums. An hour is wasted. Another hour… Get bored, tired. Give up. Leave it for a week, knowing the hassle you had with it before and your lack of time. Come back to it a week later. Repeat all of the above. Consider going and playing outside, playing with sticks in the gutter, watching ants, that sort of thing. Come back to it another week, a month… Find there is a patch. Find it makes things worse. Go watch some paint dry. Talk to a pigeon, try to get some answers? Oh Fudge this!!!!
Anyone tried to patch the Witcher with the EEpatch or had to spend more than three hours reinstalling steam on several occasions or… You get the picture.

    With so much screwing around…
Games are just not fun anymore! :(
Thank you all kindly for giving me this platform for venting. It’s like having a help group and prevents me from tearing my computer from the socket and ejecting it from the room, then headbutting my screen and peeing on it! Thank you again! Thank you! X (breath…)

For those of you getting audio stuttering on Vista try installing OpenAL, it fixed all my problems with stuttering. This was after I uninstalled Libvacodec, AC3 and FFDSHOW from my machine.

  44. Drew_Blud — November 29, 2008 @ 11:13 am

I seemed to have fixed most of my problems by allowing the launcher to adjust my graphics settings automatically… (When I installed for first time I maxed most things out)… Tried uninstalling codec’s, windowed mode, re-installed game, patched, un-patched, blah blah blah… Nothing worked, but when I simply let the app decide how it should be played… Da dah!!! It still has it’s quirks like quitting randomly every half hour or so but no where near the prob’s I had before. Running @ 1920×1200 (non-windowed), with the 1.0.0.15 patch.

    I am using the following;- E8400 cpu, 8800gts 312mb, 4gb Kingston HyperX 800mhz, 74gb WD Raptor, 600watt CoolerMaster psu, etc…
With the following soft;- WinXP Pro, K-lite codec pack (no prob’s?) & the following link is for the beta Nvidia drivers that I installed.

    http://laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=21882

Make sure to uninstall your old drivers completely before using these.

    Good Luck Vault dwellers!

  45. D — November 29, 2008 @ 11:09 pm

You say it yourself..that your game still crashes about every half hour…so is it really a fix,if the game still fails to works properly? im at the point that i dont even care anymore anyway…i uninstalled this piece of crap and gave it to a friend

  46. Drew_Blud — November 30, 2008 @ 11:08 am

No. Not a real fix. Just made it almost playable? Where as before, particularly after installing the patch, would crash before loading and just about anything/anywhere… I hope your friend dosn’t hate you after he/she pulls all their hair out. Ha!

  47. Willy — December 1, 2008 @ 2:08 pm

hey, yeah my issues have been a bit more easily noticable. first one is on the unpatched version. i played for 4 hours, wandering etc learning the gist, and i departed on the mission to clear the mine field. while following the map pointer it comes to a part where u cross under a bridge and not far beyond that was like i hit a crash wall. no matter how many times i did it or walked around it was like a massive wall that made the game crash when i walked through it.

secondly i then installed the update, and i found it worked ok, up until the part where your 16 and having the checkup where he says “your a healthy 16 year old boy blah blah”. with the patch when this loads, i am the only person on screen, can only look around in first person, and there is no sound etc, then once if i push anything besides moving the view with mouse, it freezes and sometimes to a point where i have to completely restart the comp.

i cant understand giving out a half made product, i really cant. i rarely buy an original, but i paid the $99 australian seeing as it was fallout and ive dug the series for the past 10 years. shameful really..

  48. Blackie — December 1, 2008 @ 4:28 pm

So does anyone know if the patch does work, or if and when they will be coming out with one that does fix the crash problem?

  49. Wildy — December 1, 2008 @ 7:17 pm

Don’t feel too bad about Fallout 3 being so buggy. It’s following in the brave footsteps of the previous game, after all – Fallout 2 had huge amounts of bugs and needed several patches to even be playable. :)

  50. lesso — December 1, 2008 @ 11:56 pm

the games a complete failure works fine for few hrs then you have areas that almost freeze and the only way out is to hold foward untill it lags its way to the other side 10-15mins at times or lets say you decide to use VATS after lag such as that or go through a door for example = complete system death takes roughly 30 secs for simply caps lock to turn on or off quickest solution = remove game throw in bin, spit on disc, pour petrol and various other falmable materials untill bin is full. finally light a fart over the said bin and enjoy filming the whole process for future viewing.

  51. Clydefrog — December 2, 2008 @ 12:49 am

There is a simple solution for that, Lesso. Just move the view all the way up and look at the sky when walking outdoors. Works smoothly (when there are no enemies anyway near). I don’t know if it’s worth playing, though. F3 doesn’t have any of the things that I liked Fallout 1 and 2 for. Something like Rambo or Terminator 2 sequels – they add more SFX but it’s nothing like the original.

  52. Spyro — December 3, 2008 @ 11:29 am

    okay,
i’ve made up my mind about this used-to-be-great game.
i gave up & uninstalled this game.
curse u bethesda, to spoil the greatness of Fallout epic.
thanks guys for the interesting discussion.

  53. soul reaver — December 8, 2008 @ 5:58 pm

    hey guys.
ive got the same probs as many of u altho ive got mediocre specs with 2 gb ram nvidia 6800 and a 2.8ghz.
my game runs unusually smooth at low and except wen i meet mr.burke my game doesnt crash. but i wanna take the evil path and have 2 cont the story.
i downloaded the patch and its shit!
it sez the old file not found etc etc….
    ne solutions?

  54. Clydefrog — December 10, 2008 @ 2:11 am

Had the same problem. There’s an easy solution – the Skullptura fix. Scroll up to one of D’s comments to learn where to get it from. Works fine, so don’t hesitate to apply it. Warning – it takes a lot of time to install, so be patient.

  55. FauxReal — December 10, 2008 @ 2:03 pm

I decided to format my system and start from a clean install. I can’t even install the patch though, it just hangs up with 0% progress! I let it run for 40 minutes before I stopped the process.

I think it has something to do with the fact that I installed Fallout 3 on a different partition than my system root. It at least installed the last time.

  56. runicNomad — December 11, 2008 @ 2:57 am

    Hey KPCTECH
I am interested in knowing about all this stuff that was installed with Fallout 3. Where do find a run down or list of these programs and are they all necessary to run. I would like to know what I am having put into my machine.
    thanks for all the testing

  57. jonathan — December 15, 2008 @ 5:10 am

i have no comment on the actual game play as i cant go more than 5 fucking minutes without it crashing. what the fuck was bethesda thinking by releasing such a shitty game. i vote we protest to get all our money back from bethesda. oh and what the hell good is a patch that wont even install and the blasted company wont even repond to any e-mails sent to them concerning this problem and others with fallout 3.

  58. Birk — December 17, 2008 @ 7:04 am

Don’t really have anything to add that hasn’t already been said, this game is quite pitiful…frequent crashes, poor story line and the graphics do not even surpass releases from a few years ago. I just don’t understand how a game dev co. gets away with such blatant thievery….

as buggy as ES4 Oblivion was, still beats the heck out of this steaming pile.

  59. Gunther Nordin — December 18, 2008 @ 2:04 am

Oh my God ! I am not alone in this Bethesda hell !! I stay in South Africa, but I swear… I will climb on an aeroplane or a boat and find Bethesda Headquarters and make them pay…. It’s like the Zimbwe government. They promise to fix but you never hear from them or see them again.
    Bethweda softworks…1000 000 gamers are coming for you……RUN !

  60. runicNomad — December 18, 2008 @ 5:27 am

sadly they get away with it because people pay them to.
The truth is that the ones actually creating the game the developers are not to blame bu the corporate execs that want everything out as fast as possible are.

  61. Sadface — December 28, 2008 @ 10:34 am

Same issue(but at this point is that really surprising?) It’s simply a bugged, boring and just plain bad game. It really felt linear to me as well, there was multiple ways to finish a quest, but in the end the result was the same. Speech skill was a joke as well. I’m actually uninstalling this as we speak :( .

It’s because of marketing hype and bloated game reviews that I was suckered into several bad game purchases this year, including F03, WAR and GTA4(pc). Pirated copies are the only way I see that I can protect myself and research a game before purchasing. There’s still only one game company I haven’t given up on(Blizzard), which is sad indeed.

  62. soul reaver — December 31, 2008 @ 4:59 pm

no need for the patch now guys.
i finishd the game – pretty much of an anticlimax isnt it?
the story isnt that strong and i wud have liked a boss fight in the end….well i wud have liked boss fights pretty much everywhere…didnt gain a lotta enjoyment by fragging the super mutant behemoth.

  63. Xepheus — January 6, 2009 @ 1:52 am

I completed the game too with my male character..
The only error I encounterd after patching is when I tried to get bad karma.. Damn, cos of this stupid bug, I cant recruit Jericho or Clover..

  64. soul reaver — January 6, 2009 @ 5:07 pm

    thats wasup…
ne news of a new patch ppl?

  65. Tony — January 9, 2009 @ 3:25 am

I keep crashing whilst trying to enter Rivet City. There’s an ICW (invisable Crash wall) all around Rivet City that will bring up a prompt with a “Send” / “Don’t Send” button.

This game is really buggy – inside homes and small instances, the game will randomly lockup within a few minutes of entering.

PC Spec: Quad Core 6600, 2 Gig Ram, Nvidia 9800 GTX, Sexy sleek Logitech webcam and a beautiful black keyboard (if that helps?)

Oh yeah – the patch needs a bit of work too as installing the “Fallout3_v1.0.0.15_English_UK.exe” patch does nothing except bring up a command prompt (and sometimes spawn Fallout3 too).

    So, inconclusion:
    – The current v1.0.0.15 patch doesn’t work
    – Rivet City is inaccessable for me
    – Inside small instances, I’ll randomly lockup
    – and no new patch exists to fix the issues.

    THIS SUX ! Que Lata

  66. Clydefrog — January 9, 2009 @ 4:09 am

    Try changing
apparrel. Helped for my character. Also apply the Skullptura fix if you haven’t already.

  67. Tony — January 10, 2009 @ 8:17 pm

Thanks for the reply ClydeFrog. As suggested, I tried changing my apparel, as well as applying the Skullptura fix. The fix took about 2 hours, and errored 2-3 times during the “patch” on certain mp3 files (that didn’t look good), but still completed all the same.

I tried again and the game still bombs out when nearing Rivet City, regardless of my apparel (I even tried going in naked), radio station that I was listening to, looking up at the sky, high/medium/low, windowed mode, before/after patch, etc

The game still crashes. Pity. It looks like such a good game but nevertheless, is riddled with bugs :/

  68. Clydefrog — January 11, 2009 @ 9:13 pm

You can try to load a save file from a much farther location and then load the one near Rivet. I remembered it worked when it started to crash the game on loading a previously working save file. That worked most of the time. Maybe there is a model script that makes F3 CTD around Rivet. Try to sneak past the guard. The funny thing is that the only place that was safe from crashes for me was Rivet. I don’t know why I even wanted to finish that damned game after it crashed 100+ times.

  69. FFAxDAVID — January 12, 2009 @ 5:28 pm

must admit i personally had no problems at all, never crashed once, played for weeks few hrs a day, sometimes 4hrs,not a problem…well until i entered the virtual close/street and had to kill the occupants…soon as i killed em all, game crashed-and never mind how many times i reloaded it to before the crash, soon as last occupant killed,it crashed again to desktop, and if an error was shown it was to fast to notice.

i am ”guessing” its either fixable by the skulpatch or a minor setting i can change, but then it could be a major bug conflicting with certain codec or graphic setting not fixed by anything (yet_ but don’t know.
2.1 duel core,8800gts 640mb card,750gig hd,onboard soundcard,xp pro sp2 (tried sp3,damn thing causes more problems than it fixes so went back to sp2)

anyone else have a problem that specific place only who managed to fix it,answer be appreciated?

  70. Tony — January 14, 2009 @ 10:08 pm

HOORAY ! At long last, the eagerly anticipated and long awaited 1.1 Patch is now available from http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/downloads/updates.html.

Whether this fixes my Rivet City crash is still to be seen.

    (fingers crossed)

Please post comments on the patch success/failure/etc.

  71. soul reaver — January 20, 2009 @ 5:42 pm

oi this works guys! it finally does work for me!
never crashes on meeting burke or in rivet city or paradise falls! takes a long time to load but worth it.

  72. annie buddyholm — January 26, 2009 @ 5:27 am

After wearing out Oblivion IV, I looked forwward to Fallout 3. Just got F3: won’t launch, can’t play (gives error codes that Microsoft doesn’t Understand), patch freezes @ 5% download. Screw this! Am taking game back and never going to deal with Bethesda again.

  73. grezgorz — January 30, 2009 @ 3:37 am

Maybe 1.3 will allow me to play the game without randomly freezing and forcing me to power off/on or is that too much to wish for? I’ve tried everthing from reinstalling/uninstalling game/drivers/codecs/.net framework to applying the skullptura fix, to cracking the .exe to formatting and reinstalling windows. The only way to prevent freezing is to run the game at graphics settings well below what my hardware should be able to handle. To me the fact that so many people are suffering the same problem (I’m not sure exactly what it is but I’m reasonably sure that it’s faulty programming) should warrant Bathesda making an official announcement that they are at least aware of the issue. Fixing other problems is fine but this is a show-stopper and should be their top priority.

  74. Tony — January 30, 2009 @ 6:13 pm

Someone mentioned that quad core processors might be the problem. People playing this game on duo cores didn’t have that many problems. Could this be down to the processor?

  75. Mystery — February 1, 2009 @ 5:32 am

This is bullshit! I bought my version of Fallout 3 thinking that i could enjoy a game without crashes, but did i get it NO.
Bethesda must better fix the game or by god i swear :”I WILL HUNT THEM DOWN”.

  76. Mystery — February 1, 2009 @ 7:38 pm

yay thanks to skullptura patch I GOT IT TO WORK!!! but there still are random crashes in 4 hours of gameplay so who is complaining?

  77. Micah — February 3, 2009 @ 10:38 am

Will playing this game on Windows XP fix the problem? I have just about given up. Seems like these tedious frequent freezes did not happen until i hit level 12 or so. Mine don’t crash to the desktop. The screen just…freezes. Freezes in place. The sound keeps going. I am so frustrated. Before level 12, it maybe froze 3 or 4 times on me total (basically once every few days or so). Now im lucky if I can go 15 minutes without it freezing. I cant even play the game until this is fixed! I have tried everything… anyone got any new suggestions? I have

    Quad core 2.6mhz
    8 gigs of ram
    nVidia GeForce 9600 GT

Playing in a Window seems to help, but i didn’t buy good hardware to play like that. The frame rate is crap in Window mode (unless someone knows how to smooth it out, then i will play windowed).

  78. MikeG — February 11, 2009 @ 9:28 pm

I think you mean 2.6GHz, not mhz. Regardless… I followed some instructions I found via google – it was on some sort of forum – and the crashing has become very infrequent now. Regardless, I try to keep a regular habit of tapping the Quick Save key. As one acquaintance of mine said, “That’s what it’s there for.”

    I have a Quad-Core 3GHz, 4Gigs of RAM, and a 4870 1GB, since specs are being listed.

Anyway, the method to cut down on crashes was to try and make as much of the game directory read-only and edit-friendly as possible, and then manually run the game in Administrator mode. This even worked for my version which is on Steam. Really, it seems to be more a permissions issue than a hardware or game-code issue, if this actually helps.

Try and look up the instructions yourself, though, so you can maybe get it right, but I think I gave the gist of the idea.

  79. MikeG — February 11, 2009 @ 9:37 pm

Oh, that’s it, now. I remember how you need to do it, now that I’m looking at the settings… go into the properties for the game directory, go under Security, and find either your login or the Users group and use both or either Edit or Advanced and try to give all permissions. If Vista bothers you with a dialog at any point, just click continue- in fact, if it does, then it means it’s hopefully letting your changes be permanent. Then once you’re absolutely sure the directory and all its sub-directories are set to be within your full control (by okaying/accepting the properties window changes and re-opening the folder properties page and checking permissions), then unclick Read-Only and apply. This should fix most, if not all, of the problems, like it did for me. It really is a matter of permissions, which is admittedly a nice security feature of Vista, but it can certainly be annoying.

  80. mr-furley — February 17, 2009 @ 4:01 pm

i have been having some of the same sorts of problems every one has been experiencing and that is basically fallout 3 is really crappy. i have bought fallout3 from circuit city today,i put it in my dvd rom and it installed perfectly.then once i went to play the new game it simply would load for 5 seconds and then it would it freeze and leave me to press “control+alt+delete” to unlock my desktop and then id finally have to end all tasks.i uninstalled once then reinstalled it, and even installed the english patch afterwards and it still did the exact same. i ran it through setup.exe and it did nothing also.i have a 64bit windows vista xp and i dont see what the problem is becuse it is brandnew. please anyone if you can help me id really appreciate it..

  84. MikeG — March 30, 2009 @ 7:34 pm

As I said before, you need to adjust the permissions inside the Fallout 3 directory and even run in Administrator mode to be sure it won’t crash. It worked for me on the Steam version, and I’m pretty sure you’ll need to do it with the retail version, too.

  85. D — April 4, 2009 @ 10:04 pm

I quit playing Fallout 3 a few months ago.I installed it a few days ago,Would have thought bethesda fixed the crashes with the patches they released..well..i installed the patches ..runned the game, and it cashed!..over and over and over.haha fucking incredible.SO..i downloaded the Skullptura final fix again and applied that over the patch.Runned the game after..and No Crash…Seiously Bethesda YOU SUCK!,some cracker can fix your game, but this BIG multi million company with i dont know how many developers who made the game cannot?!!Commit Seppuku! The shame is too great!

  86. D — April 5, 2009 @ 9:11 am

By the way,if some of you experience a slow down or the game starts stuttering after a while of playing, while it was smooth when you started the game you may try this ingame.

Press ~ to bring up the console

( Some of you do not see a console due to your resolution, but its still there anyway if u just press ~ once)

With the console open type in “pcb” without the quotes this is Purge cell buffer;and should supposedly
free up memory and may increase performance,it seems to work for me.

Old file not found. however, a file of the same time was found. no update done since file contents do not match.
For those of you who havent already fixed this what the problem is is that youre applying the wrong patch. Im assuming that you just downloaded the patch from mirror 1 on this site which is the US patch. If you are running the US version of the game it should patch fine but is your using the UK version then it wont patch. The same with the UK patch on US game. All you have to do is download the correct patch-mirror 3 for UK version.

  89. The Rainting Raver — May 28, 2009 @ 12:31 am

The problem is not with the games its with the fact that nobody’s pc is the same and game makers make the game on a specific system and that tends to screw with other systems. Take my situation bioshock crashed every time i launch it. (been pissing me off for weeks.) but fallout 3 runs perfect never had a game crash but a butt load of glitches and i have been playing it since day of release. and some of the comments i have seen on this thread are having the exact opposite problems. the fact is that this is a good game but its forced to be put out in only 2 or 3 years time but a game of this magnitude needs at least 5 years to work out all the bugs. so in other words F*CK Bethesda’s CEO’s and shareholders but not its game developers. thanks for putting up with my rant
