Problem #1:  Fear 2 crashes to desktop (CTD) whenever I reach a specific point in the game (event/location varies for some users)

Solution A. Disable HDR
Solution B. Turn down all graphics settings to minimum. If turning all graphics settings to lowest fixes this problem, try updating to the latest video card drivers available.
Solution C. If  you are getting the MSVCR80.dll error, check out the solution posted at FEAR 2 problem #2 (right below this one :p).

Problem #2:  Fear 2 crashes to desktop (CTD) whenever I reach a specific point in the game (event/location varies for some users)

Solution A. as posted by dannyo (Monolith FEAR 2 dev)

1a. If you are getting an error regarding msvcr80.dll (or if you don’t know what’s wrong…), try this more involved method of reinstalling the vcredist package- (warning! This is complicated!)
-Go to Add/Remove programs (programs and features in Vista)
-Find Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
-Uninstall it
-Conduct a search of C:\Windows\WinSXS for msvcr80.dll
-If it appears, rename the one that is labelled as being in this folder - x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727. 762_x-ww_6b128700 (THIS IS IMPORTANT! RENAMING OTHER ONES COULD CAUSE BAD TIMES!) to something like msvcr801.dll
-Restart (IMPORTANT!)
-Reinstall vcredist_x86.exe (see tip 1 for info on where to find this)

2. If running Windows Vista Ultimate or Home Premium, please note that there is a problem with the Games Explorer launch icon. Use the start menu or desktop icons to launch the game.

3. Some users have had success removing the files wblogo2.vib and monolithbumper.vib. We’re looking into why these files may be causing problems for some, but this should at least allow you to play the demo if this is the problem you are experiencing. Some have had to remove ALL of the vib files. (NOTE - if doing this allows you to launch successfully, please contact me.)

4. Some users have experienced problems running the game while running two monitors. In these situations, disconnecting one monitor has resolved the issue.

Problem #3: Problem starting up FEAR 2 / Fear 2 black screen at startup.

Solution A. as posted by dannyo (Monolith FEAR 2 dev)

1. Run the vcredist.exe and dxsetup.exe
If you’re running Installshield - in the installer folder (what you downloaded, not the program files folder), there is a folder called support. The vcredist.exe is found there. In that same folder, there is a DirectX9 folder. Run the dxsetup.exe in that folder.

Solution B. as posted by Shtong at ProjectOriginCommunity (works for most of the user with FEAR 2 startup problems)

One of the experiments I made in my case was removing the wb and monolith VIBs, which allowed me to access the main menu, but not launching the game as it still crashes at 50% of the first level’s loading screen. These videos must have something special because I can see the others (esrb, gamespy, main menu background) with no problem.

Solution C. as posted by dkellie6669 at ProjectOriginCommunity

I run windows firewall and a shaw secure firewall. I use shaw secure for my antivirus Like other threads have said to do make the following exceptions in your firewall

  • GameoverlayUI (its in the main steam folder )
  • C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\fear2 (the red icon that launches fear 2)

Outbound set to allow , in bound i have on prompt and it works fine.

Problem #4: Fear 2 sound problem | Only sound  you in Fear 2 are voices (Thats one creepy F.E.A.R. 2 error you got there)

Solution A. As posted by Thehoff at ProjectOriginCommunity

Update your audio drivers. I had the same problem and I did that and it works now.
Any of you have Realtek HD Audio? That’s what I had for sound and an driver update fixed that.

Solition B. as posted by edgar0kas (and if this fixed it for you, bang your head on the nearest wall)

Turn your volume up

Solution C. As posted by dannyo (Monolith FEAR 2 dev)

1. Remove any 3rd party codec packs from your system

2. Disable all audio devices except the one you want to use (we are fixing this incorrect audio device selection, but this is a workaround)-
Big big thanks to Frosty for working up this list!

Note: For Windows XP

First up is to check what audio playback devices you have registered:
Go to Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices > Audio (tab) > Sound playback section
Look at the combo-box’s list of devices and note the ones which aren’t your soundcard to help you find a matching item in the Device Manager later
–Note: ATI HD Audio rear output (HDMI out for Radeon owners) shouldn’t be a problem
Next locate the items in Device Manager to disable or uninstall them:
Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware (tab) > Device Manager
Find and disable the extra sound devices (probably under Sound, video and game controllers or System Devices)
- If you can’t find anything that matches click View > Show hidden devices and check again
- If you still can’t find anything close Device Manager and right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced (tab) > Environment Variables and add DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES to System Variables with a value of 1 (this will make Device Manager show everything it has detected over the lifetime of your OS instance that are no longer installed, like cards you’ve swapped out etc..), then reopen Device Manager >..> Show hidden devices and check again
Repeat the steps in the first part to check that only your sound h/w remains, if you have a Radeon 4___ then ATI HD Audio rear output will also be there (unless you disabled it) but that shouldn’t interfere, you can go back and try disabling that as well if you still get the “Sound Acceleration Error”
Finally try the game and assuming it works, you can remove the Environment Variable now if you want to.

2a. Disable other devices that may want to output audio
-It has been reported that 56k modems are causing interference. If you have no use for a 56k modem, remove it in device manager.
-Disable bluetooth drivers (if you’re not using bluetooth audio as your default)

3. Make sure that the audio device you want to use is set to default!

Problem#5. F.e.a.r. 2 Steam Server Busy

Solution A.  Check steam support here -> https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5483-YUFN-0521

For: Problem #3: Problem starting up FEAR 2 / Fear 2 black screen at startup.

    >If you tried all the suggested solutions and still doesn’t work, try this ones:
    >>Grant access to all .exe’s related to Fear2 and Steam in ZoneAlarm (if applicable)
    >>Verify Steam Cache files of Fear2. (Option in Steam)
    >>If you have Logmein installed, it will install a display driver. Uninstall Logmein, just in case ;).
    >>Install the latest nvidia drivers for your card.
    >>Restart computer, and try running fear2.

I managed to pass the black screen issue at startup by disabling the FLAC codec. I can now enjoy the game in all its glory. The solution can be found here as well as any other possible solutions: http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t18035.html

This is what solved my problem, all thanks to Readysetpc-»

Hopefully this will help you out.

    1) Right click on your My computer and go to properties

    2) Then click on hardware and click on device manager

    3) Go down to your sound, video, game controller and click on that, then double click on Audio codecs

    4) Then from here click the properties tab and look for CoreFlAC Audio CoDec 0.1.0.0 , double click on that and check Do not use this audio codec … Apply that and ok.

    5) Run the game and it should work enjoy

I hope this helps, thanks and have fun.

I have the pc game. After reaching “Still Island” (the end of the next-to-last level), and operating the elevator to the final level, instead of loading the final level, I get booted back to the main menu. I’ve had no problems with the rest of the game. Any help?

The problem I have with FEAR 2 is that it crashes about every half hour or so. I though it was a heat issue as I had everything overclocked on my system, but when default values are used it does the same thing. Generally it does it when it goes to save or load the next level. It CTD’s and then I can task manager and end steam service client and pop right back into the game and it will go for about another half hour or so. No rebooting is necessary or lettting the system sit. It crashes, I end process, and restart game. In less than a minute I’m back up and playing until the next crash. Weird. I am running memory test now, will let know if I find anything. Anyone else having this problem?

I just purchased the game and have a 6 month old Dual Core computer with a RWDVD. During Steam installation I receive-
    ERROR 1305.
    Error reading from file.
    E:\resources\steaminstall_english.msi
Verify file exists and that you can access it.

I am able to see and access the file through Explorer but I keep receiving this message. I make CD and DVD copies from this drive so its functioning.

When loading the mech level “top” the laod screen stops at 69 percent and never progresses. all i can do is alt tab out of the game and end task on it. what is wrong i’ve tried many things but i can never seem to get this level to work.

  14. Hope — February 20, 2009 @ 6:01 am

When loading the Elementary level the load screen stops at 73 percent and never progresses. all i can do is alt tab out of the game and end task on it.

the answer to when you get booted to main menu, or the loading menu freezes is…………….

Uninstall the game, and re-install… worked with me. i’m playing in the 5th level already. i know it’s 12 gb’s and almost 20 minutes of installing but its the o9nly solution that works that i’ve found.

my system easily has the ability to play the game, so whats next??? anyone????

  24. Mike A — March 8, 2009 @ 10:32 pm

I just installed fear, and like Half Life 2 (which my son just found and is playing) the screen goes black if I enter the Video setting screen. Even if I had not changed anything yet. In Universe at War we had a similar problem with higher resolution settings. Yes all the latest NVIDIA drivers (they just released on last week). Since I have not yet played Fear 2, I cannot comment on any other issues YET. I was just hoping to find a quick fix here.

Can anyone comment on whether or not having the physix turned on has any effect? I am going to try that.

PS we play Half Life in a Window and it plays perfectly, no video issues, no blacking out. Looking for a way to force Fear to play in a window as well.

System ASUS AN8, dual core AMD, Twin Video in SLI, all latest drivers for Video, Audio ETC.

    Thank you for your help,

    Mike

  25. Mike A — March 9, 2009 @ 12:03 am

Turned off Physix - no change
Turned off Physix and SLI - no change
Thought I had it on the next setting but foolishly changed three more things at once..need to start again.
Begin again, Set default to Single Display Performance mode (makes sense, only have one display connected.
Turned off Physix - no change, add sli no change, both back on.
Now SLI and Pysix on - turn off antialiasing mode, able to get at the video settings but when I started the game, black screen. Reboot again (PITA)
Gamma Correction off - can get to video setting screen, start game = black screen -reboot
Turn Off Physx, above same, start again, briefly see “Abandon previous game warning” then black. Reboot (cannot get back to windows with windows key or Ctrl-alt-del)
Turn off SLI (newest drivers let you do this without rebooting - love that), above same, start game, ok, games starts, lets see how it runs.

  26. Mike A — March 9, 2009 @ 1:49 am

    enabled Physx…loading…started opening sequence….working…

  27. Mike A — March 10, 2009 @ 3:21 am

I changed my NVIDIA drivers back
    Half life 2 ok
Fear 2 REFUSES SLI! I guess the 182 drivers are needed to run Fear 2 in sli….

Oh well I played for two hours last night with one card disabled in it was just great…SLI need not apply…

    Mike

  28. Mike A — March 10, 2009 @ 3:49 am

Oh My mistake LOL…you have to hit APPLY…ran FEAR two sli forced spit frame, not so good, then try alternate frame. bingo works great…both GPU’s running fine…

    SOLVE MY PROBLEM. THNK’S
