Problem #1 : The game hangs after a few minutes of playing minutes of playing Empire total war”. Rebooted my PC but then got the error message “failed to run install script” (as posted by deConteville)
Solutions : Reinstall the game or redownload the game from Steam if you bought it from Steam. If you bought the game from a vendor, reinstall Steam.
Problem #2 : Empire Total War BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) when launched
Solution A: Update your video card drivers to the latest version.
Solution B: Try solution to Problem #1
Solution C: A lot of people seem to get this problem. Wait for a late-zero day patch for Empire Total War.
Problem #3 : Bought Empire Total War game from Steam, Downloaded the game and Steam automatically updated. But the game wont start
Solutions : the percentage is not correct…….DONT restart steam and don’t click launch game because you’ll have to start again…. ( as posted by mr_mega_drive)
Problem #4 : when I go to install it(Click “install empire: total war”
i get
Steamservice.exe – Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or, file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. (I click OK)
Setup Error- Failed to start install script
I have steam installed up-to-date and running, also, steamservice.exe is a file on the disc. (as posted by Dragon239)
Solutions : Good ol’ restart. And I was able to install Empire Total War. (as posted by Dragon239)
Problem #5 : Empire Total War (CTD) crashes to desktop. Crash error message is something like “Problem signature: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: Empire.exe “
Solution: Try playing Empire Total War in windows xp sp2 compatibility.
Solution: Try running the Empires executable in the Empire Total War steamapps directory
Problem #6 : Empire Total War white screen error. Im using an integrated Intel graphics card to play Empire Total War
Solution: Updating the drivers from Intel.com MIGHT get the game running, albeit slowly. The game requires a dedicated graphics card to run properly/at all. (As posted by DarKTW)
Problem #7 : Empire Total War wont start, “This Game is Currently Unavailable” error message from steam.
Solution A: Restart Steam
Solution B: Change the Steam download location, restart Steam and try again. (as posted by DarkKtw)

i am having a problem with steam. when i try to launch the game steam tries to and comes up with the box “launching empire total war” ,but then that box starts to flash and never stops and the game never starts either. Any ideas on what i can do? tried reinstalling twice.
i installed empire total war, but when i try to install it on steam it will go up to like 15% but then go down to 0% and it does that and wont download it.
Start to install and get the message “Steam.exe(main exception): Failed to get file attributes, Win32 Error 2 “The system cannot find the file specified”"

I have a similar problem to #3, but when I for some reason my computer simply shuts down once the update reaches a certain percentage–I wasn’t watching it right at the time(s) that it happened, but it’s usually very late in the progress… it’s happened 3 times so far.
I’m installing the game from CD, and when it asks for Disc 2, the installation does not recognize the second disc. I checked my CD-Drive and computer, and they are working fine. Also tried uninstalling and reinstalling – same thing again.
Try too update after installing but just stops and sais its unavailable. Just like to say steam has fucked up my gaming experience time after time. I hate steam and just want to play without all the crap!
Everytime I try to launch empire total war, the steam window comes up and says ‘launching empire total war but then closes and nothing happens.
when ever i try to install Empire Total war it gets stuck on Creating local game cache files.
Below that it says Preparing Empire Total War files for install.
The loading bar is full and yet it stays there I try to cancel install and steam freezes up.
I have tried every solution i can find ranging from restaring/reinstalling steam and the game to giving the steam.exe a desktop icon and giving it the dvd drive as a target and non of them are working
everytime i play it will freeze or crash 40 min into a session some times when it freezes you hear a high pitched noise coming from the speakers very similar to the noise a nvidia carrds makes without power plugged in but in 7.1 surround :/
they should really release a zero day patch for Empire total war already. the game keeps on hanging after 5 minutes or so (in battle mode)

Similar problem to #10. When installation starts message saying “Preparing files for installation”, gets to a full bar and then does nothing, I have left it for an hour and nothing happens. When I try to cancel installation Steam freezes up.
Hi, empire is crashing after playing a few minuts! Turning the screen to freeze!
Whenever I try to start a grand campaigne, the game appcrashes on me. Also at startup the SEGA logo flashes and flicker continuously as well as the startup movie/RtI movies
well, i’ve instaled game, uppdated and all worked fine.. next day I started steam, ran game, but it crashed with “an error occurred, app will be closed” error, after few tries I reinstaled game, but problem keeps happening all the time
Empire Total War could be heading towards armageddon. Currently the install and Steam elements are a total shambles. Why bother with all that. A simple disk install and play the game is all we wanted. I’m 24 hours in and have had it playing once!!

Every time I win the first battle in “Road to Independence” and click exit, it says “Empire: Total War has stopped working”. I’m not sure what is causing this.
To those who have problem launching game via steam and have vista you should try launching steam with “run as administrator” if you havent already, might help.
I myself is gettin BSOD crashes after 30min-1h gaming time also. I had no problem with demo, wich was running even better. Settings are set to recommended, have quad core, 8800 gtx and 2 gigs ram. Waiting for a fix patch..
I have had sound stuttering issues, like a broken record that loops, slows down and then flicks out of it. Happens about 30 seconds to a minute apart.
Running a quad Q9550 @ 3.2Ghz Stable
4 Gb DDR3 1333
8800 Gtx 1Gb
All latest drivers etc… Steam game file verified and defraged.

At least you guys have GOT the damn game files! Steam keeps telling me the game is unavailable and to try later… i bought it off steam 3 days ago and have been trying ever since.
Just tried to install. Steam went ok, but then had a problem with the account which took me ages to sort out. Then it continuously stated that servers were busy. Now it wants to update. 2 hours into this experience and just think that Creative Assembly have really let themselves down on this one. I just want to install the game and play. £34 down the drain, i’m taking it back for a refund!

Hi. Bought from Best Buy. Installed from Disk. Launched from Steam. Game loads. I select grand camp. Select empire. Game loads to campaign map. After a few seconds it freezes.
I’m currently trying uninstalling steam and reinstalling steam. Will post back what happens.
On Turn 27 in road to independence campaign I click end turn, the camera jumps to george washington and the button is grayed out. I can do everything else in the game except end the turn. The autosave feature creates a save whenever I press end turn so I get to keep working at it.
I played for about a day, and just recently when I load campaign after about 15 seconds it starts making this very, very loud high pitch noise.
Ive never had this problem before and my sound works fine in every other game. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Every campaign Ive tried has seemed to run smoothly for a time, but ALWAYS around turn 20 it just crashes when I end turn. And theres no way to reload it, it just keeps doing it on that turn every time! This is seriously crippling the game, the one Ive wanted to play for years. HELP!!
Every time I play a ship battle It gives me a BSOD after a little while. Everything works fine and then it dies.

Could anyone help me, Ive played two campaigns, both times at around year 1715 I start hearing this really loud pitch. I save reload and its still there. Ive tried different versions of sound_sfx.pack, tried different drivers. please if anyone could give me some advice i would appreciate it.

I have several problems whit E:TW:
sSometimens when i load a battle (usally land battle) the loader begin to switch back and forth very quicly i waited 5-10minuttes and nothign happens… (thsi happens very often).
Sometimes in the middle of a battle i encounter “Empire stopped working trying to fidn a solution…”…(this does not happen so often, but i allready tried it 3 times.)
Sometimes when i load my campaing, the screen flashes white and then nothing happens for a LONG time…
Really, someone who have any idea abbout what coudl be the problem?
I have the same issue as no 17 (bg). I believe it may be another program running in the background which is causing the game to stop as Total War Shogun had a similar issue if you had codecs installed on your machine. Im gonna re install the game from steam and then try killing some processes to see if that helps. Else I’ll have to wait for a patch

In response to Matthew’s (#9) problem, it is most likely your firewall. I had the same problem at first too. Make sure to add the Empire EXE to the excluded list, or just turn off Norton, PC-Cillin, Windows Firewall, etc. The exectuable should be located in the Steam directory in the apps folder I believe.
Well, everyone having the problem that their download freezes, i know how to fix it.
First thing, go to My Computer and the drive, on which u installed ur steam and ur steamapps is located, go to properties of the drive. If it says the format is FAT32, its a wrong format. To fix this follow these steps.
Run the (damn whats it in english) the blackscreen at which u have to give in commands, u all know hat i mean as an administrator.
Then enter this.
Cmd
Then: ‘convert d: /fs:ntfs’
the d: is the drive where u installed steam
then when it asks for forced restart say no. When it asks to convert after reboot, say yes.
Simply reboot and ur steam should download it fine now.
My problem: Everytime i load a land battle (navy too i think) it crashes when the bar is at 25-30%…

I’m really disappointed with ETW. It crashes all the time in Vista, and like Vista or not many people have it. ETW looks like a great game, but the constant crashes ruins it. Why can’t these companies release these games without Steam and all of this other crap. These things just add more problems.
Bought the game in shop yesterday….Steam installation went fine but cound’nt install Empire…Coz it says “steam error; Steam servers too busy try again in a few minutes”. I keep trying every hour or so but never works. Unreal tournament downloading from steam as im typing but very slow…What can I do plz…??
Hi, I’m played Grand Camp. about 20th turns & my game crashes and whitescreen attack everytime at my monitor. I unistall few times the ETW & reinstall… It does same shit everytime! I waited lot of the Empire: Total War, and what I get… totaly crap. I hope you release some of very very BIG PATCH.
hey, i have installed empire 3 times and updated it to 100%. But when i start the game i only get to the startscreen “empire total war” and the game closes without an error message can somebody help? PLEASE!!!! i am frustrated

Dear All,
So Empire has been out just over 24 hours now and it’s great to see so many people having fun and playing the game we’ve all been working on for so long, thanks again for your patience.
Naturally the first day has thrown up a few issues that people are concerned about and I wanted to take this opporutinty to address a few of those.
Steam:
Preloading – Steam preloading was unfortunately unavailable, this was addressed in a previous statement, but I wanted to pass on our apologies again that this didn’t take place. This occured for technical reasons outside CA’s control. We are looking into a way of repaying the faith of those that preordered a while ago, more will be communicated as it develops.
Downloading times and patches – These vary a great deal depending on your connection, location, and indeed the server you are downloading from. We deliberately kept the day one patch small (100MB approx) so as to remove too much additional download pressure on your connections. Overall the download times seem to have been good, and despite heavy demand Steam coped well although I know it was a tough wait initially for those of you downloading at first. Again, thanks for your patience.
Why Steam – There has been a lot of conjecture that we used Steam solely for copy protection means and that this placed unnecessary demands on our fans whilst the pirates still went ahead and copied Empire. Part of the decision for Steam was indeed copy protection, I’d be lying if I said that wasnt the case. However no copy protection method is foolproof and we do recognise that less casual pirates will still copy the game. Steam offers us a variety of excellent multiplayer facets, an achievment system a strong userbase, good support and automatic patching to every one of our players. These are the primary reasons we chose to use it. I realise there are those people who simply do not like Steam and never will, that’s fair enough, from a developer perspective it was never intended to harm fans and we believe it offers a genuine advantage to our title, after a few rounds of seamless 18th century warfare agtainst friends, hopefully you will too.
Nvidia Graphics Issues:
A few people have reported problems with some Nvidia graphics cards when playing Empire. The latest Nvidia drivers, that is those released yesterday (Approximately) have not been fully tested with Empire, meaning we cannot guarantee their stability. We test as fully as we can but when drivers are released so close to our release date, there’s simply no way we can put them fully through their paces before you guys get the game. Rolling back to older drivers seems to solve the issue in most cases, I can say we’ve tested driver version 7.15.0011.8206 on a huge range on Nvidia cards and had no significant problems. But we’re still working to see if there’s anything we can do.
As well as the driver work arounds one of our graphics gurus here recommends turning off volumetric effects for the time being, in case that’s whats going wrong with the drivers. It might also be helpful to step through the other options too ‘SSAO’, VSync etc.
Canada
There appears to have been some fault in distribution or delivery of Empire in many Canadian territories. SEGA are investigating this and we’ll get back to you as soon as we have any more news. Thank you to everyone who’s going out looking for the game and trying hard to get it, we’re doing all we can to get it to you!
Trade Route Problems
We’ve become aware of an occasional problem with the trade route system when shipping goods with some factions to some cities. This is being addressed currently and will be fixed shortly. Which brings me neatly to my final point…
Support and Patches:
We fully intend to support Empire consistently post-release. We’re very appreciative to everyone thats bought the title and you deserve our continued support as a result. Therefore I can confirm that we are currently working on a patch that will be automatically rolled out via Steam, sometime next week.
This patch will address the gameplay issue above, fix a few stability problems and improve upon Empire’s general performance.
There is a patch schedule that means regular patches will be appearing after this point. To that end, if you have any problems gameplay or otherwise please report them in a thread on the technical section of the forum giving your dxdiag information and as much constructive feedback as possible. We want to make Empire the best Total War experience to date and with your help we can continue to do that.
As always, many thanks for your patience and your continued support. We will do all we can to reward that and support the title you have bought for the future.

Like Bob in #7 above ,I too can not get the game to load disc2 during installation. Does anyone know of a solution? I am really pissed at you Creatve. I have been a fan of the Total war series since Rome, but this decision to use Steam created an overly complicated mess. Your marketing dept. forgot the golden rule of customer usage..”Keep It Simple Stupid”.You never hinted on your box that steam was involved. Had I known I would not have touched this game, because I remember the mess Valve got into with halflfe 2 and the problems with Steam.

Someone help me out here! I preordered E:TW many months ago because i have been a fan of the series since shogon, and I have been looking forward to playing this game ever since i first heard about it.
Now, I have the same problem as Joey181188: “steam error; Steam servers too busy try again in a few minutes” every time i try to install.
I have tried, litterly over 100 times now, I have tried deactivating my firewalls(both of them), tried reinstalling steam 5 times, I tried change the download location to almost any other than my region.. still nothing and I’m all out of ideas. I’m begging someone to help me! I REALLY WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME!!
Bless me with your wisdom please guys, since steam does absolutely nothing.

I am having a problem with the game crashing unto the desktop after so many turns. I thought it was my computer overheating so I upgraded and put a brand new fan in as well as a better power supply and graphics card that should easily be enough to run it. I run it from the steam engine most of the time and it still continues to do this crashing. It’s not my computer overheating and my graphics card is brand new just bought yesterday. I would love to play this game, please help.
When I load the game the game starts but the locad screen stays(can move curser and hear the troops and the ambiance)

WTF!!!!!!!!! i cant take it anymore! 3 days of nonstop updating,downloads,installing,uninstalling f@$ck. i launch game from steam which is 100% ready then i get a white screen and tells me there is a problem and windows has stopped working.

In the third chapter of Road to Independence, the game keeps crashing at a point where the British are making their move. This recurs and happens one time when a gentleman moves.

Got a problem each time I try to start the game. The credentials appear and when the intro is supposed to start, my computer blue screens. Installed latest video drivers (my card ATI 3870), did not work. Pretty frustrated, please help and fix the problem.
Each time I try to start a campaign, my game freezes after hitting half way loading on the load screen. I can hear the advisor giving me info, and the campaign map music, but I am still on the load screen, which keeps jumping forwards and backwards on the timer.
Any help at all? Is it a re-install job or a crappy graphics card/processor?
Been playing total war games since the first one and they are all 10 out of 10.but Empire Total war is a let down keeps crashing all the time and i have a new pc with vista and vista is a let down too and why be a part of Steam?.If It’s not broken then don’t fix it.

same problem as many others – freezes on intro screen. the steam experience of downloading, installing, reinstalling, registering etc etc was frustrating enough, now i cant even play the game… i love the other TW games but this one is going back to the shop for a refund. real stupid to complicate the installation process to this extent and alienate real fans!
Fancy watching an episode of Time Commanders with Peter Snow featuring Empire Total War and half way through the programe it crashes LOL…..can’t waite for the mother of all patches to be released………or a refund…
While trying to update with STEAM the process will reach about 50% after 12 hours of downloading. At this point STEAM engine crashes and I have to start the download all over again. I have tried this 3 times now with the same results. As much as I think I would enjoy the game, I would rather get my money back and save myself the headache.
When i start the game it keeps loading on the intro and then it closes. I dont know whats wrong, I tougth it will work fine since i have Vista and its on the Games For Windows platform, but it doesnt. Will ther be a patch that fixes this soon?
Now I saw two thing about land battle (not before when I played)
First: soldiers & cavalry lags when I moving those forward:
Second: I moving with cam forward and backward and somekind of black “window” jumping at the monitor and disappear…

Same problem as angelfin and Chris, it crashes at the intro screen. I have Vista 32 Bit and my computer meets all requirements. I have The Ati Radeon HD 2800XT videocard if that helps. Pleeease if somebody have a solution or know what to do, tell me!
some times in road to independence i end my turn, the british makes their move and it just freezes my first encounter was when a infantry unit comes to a city and it freezes, it kept doing that, so i just encounter the unit with my own from moving to that area and it didnt freeze, but i got another one of those freezes whena ship comes downa river by a city. ctrl+alt+del says it is not responding. I have a nvidia card with the latest driver installed i dont know if thats the case or not.
I have installed empire total war with a lot of trouble, but it finally worked after a few hours. I can play the amerian indepence part perfectly. But when I hit the Grand Campaign button in the main menu, the game freezes and aborts to windows. Very Strange. :S
so ive istalled the game thought everything was fine until trying to load land battles more than eight total units including both sides of the battle the game crashes during load screen makes it to about 95% then just doesn’t load. U can actually here the staging part of the battle but the load screen is still up when it should be gone. In episode three on the road to independence the same thing it can’t finish the load cleanly. i can hear geaoge washington talking about bunkerhill i can even hearthe battl start but can’t see a thing. the water battles seem to work fine and the campaign map seems ine its just the land batttles u know 33% of the fun of the game. steam sucks balls they don’t have any support. Sega and creative assembly owe a huge apology for making loyal fans go through all of this bullshit gives us four disk to install and make it work, not this 1.5 crap then this bullshit steam ass holes. I’ll say it right now im never playing steam for any other games again. And everyone who bought a retail version of this should take the game back and demand their money maybe that will wake creative assembly up to the horrific blunder..
wow i bought this game today installed fine started up steam and got a message saying not ready to play,i noticed it said updating next to Empire in steam so i left it…. i checked back about 5 hours later and it was at 5%. . . . . . d/l at 20kbs on average… seriously…. my jaw dropped i restarted steam to see if steam was playing up…..and it put the updating back to zero…. my jaw litterally fell off…..still it says updating game in my steam and its updating at a snails pace this has to be the biggest gaming shambles i have ever encountered. . . . . if i cant sort it out by 2morro ill be returning the game as i expect a few people will and already have done and hopefully CA will think wisely before using steam cleint again….. whatever happend to buy game/install/play….. jesus!

Didn’t bother reading all comments but my problem is very similar to the start of 40
Everything fine until i get to the load screen for ANY battle then it just gets to about half way (in the load screen) and then the bar flicks between a third and a half and keeps doing it until i close it. The weird thing is i can select the units and order them about but i cannot see them because the load screen is still there.
Can anyone help?
p.s i know how crap steam is i was a CSS player

I finally got the game running smoothly! Like you said in your comment, my computer didn’t register Disc 2, stopping installation. After doing some research online, I realized I could finish the installation using a download from Steam. Following this, I opened Steam to the My Games tab, right-clicked on Empire Total War, and clicked Continue Download. It took a few hours, but it eventually reached 100% installation and everything has run great since then. I hope this works as well for you as it did for me.
Tired of trying fix after fix after fix… the game is at fault. Why was it shipped in such a pitiful state?
1. I get the CTD often which kills the campaign, reloading at any previous save still leads to exactly the same problem. Forces me to restart the campaign.
2. Client hangs during the turn of France (no way back to windows either!) which kills the campaign, reloading at any previous save still leads to exactly the same problem.
3. Very odd stat inconsistencies of units, at one time a galley’s stats would easily out-gun any advanced ship.
Result: The game is unplayable.
All known fixes fail. All drivers are freshly updated. My PC can easily cope with the recommended spec.
Apparently we need to wait until next week for a patch. Not sure the Devs understand the extent of their mistake, usually it’s the MMOs which abuse the patience of it’s customers.
I have the same problem as #64, it loads half way, on the loading screen for anything, grand campaign, battles, etc. Then it stops and goes back and forth at around 50%. I could here the battle going on and the advisors but I still only see the loading screen and the quote.
When I click on the campaign or turtorials. The game will start to load and about halfway through the loading bar will begin to flash and jump around in the center. I will be able to hear the advisor talking but the screen just stays on that loading screen with the bar continuing to flash.

empire Toyal War is freezing at all the loading screens after single player is selected–Thats the tutorials and the grand campaign screens. I have spent the past 2 days trying to get this game working, a little frustrating yes?
I am having the same issues as comments 57,64,77,80, and 81. The game loads to the main menu, but when i click on ANY of the options it loads half-way and then starts jumping around. I hear the audio and advisors in the background, but the loading screen is stuck up there. I spent three days trying to fix this to no avail. CAN ANYONE HELP?!?!?!?!?!??
Same as you, #86, I click on the single player options, but then halfway through the loading, it jumps around, but the sound and cursor act as if I were in the campaign.
Same problem as 87, 86, and probably many others. Anything single player and the loading bar gets halfway and starts jumping. You can hear advisors and background battle noise but thats it. This is incredibly frustrating considering I had to fight my way through steam just to get the game running. I hate to throw money out the window so it would be nice to be able to play. Anybody have a solution for this yet?
My problem is that after a while the the GC it just stops working and crashes…. very annoying same date everytime

Solution: I went to my computers manufacturer`s website, in my case Dell. There i found a patch for my videocard which mostly fixed up the problems i had with Medieval 2 and Empire Total War. So i recommend updating and patching videocards, drivers and such. Have a nice day

The game is at fault here. I first installed it on Win Vista 64 and kept getting CTD no matter what GPU drivers I used so I tried downloading it agan from steam but the same issues kept happening:-
CTD (crash to desktop)
Bad sound on the campaign map
Jerky graphics on the campaugn map
I then installed Win Vista 32 and after a few hours of playing I only had 1 CTD although the sound is still abit distorted on the campaign map and there is still no option for you to delete a saved game!

click on your ships, game locks up and may crash.try to move a unit, game crash.have a duel, game crash, get to a certain year, for me it was 1779 and a crash from which there’s no coming back.i’ve had to restart six times because of fatal crashes.i’ve yet to complete a full campaign.i’ve adjusted anti aliasing etc but all to no avail.my machine is very capable of running it, with dual 4850’s and a lot of ram so they cant blame all the issues people are having on older hardware.
they really need to patch this now, not next week before people start taking it back.
in the Grand Campaign, my screen just freezes, and it seems like all the screen is getting twisted around the center with a few different colours…this problem didnt occur at the first 24 hours i had the game, but its happening after 5mins of gameplay in the grand campaign now…Have to reboot my computer each time.

I’m having the appcrash as well on empire.exe quite late on in the game. Anything to do with accessing my fleets does it on the american map, though it aperas to be starting to affect the europe map gradually. I’ve tried all the work arounds mentioned with no effect.
I agree about steam though, it should have been optional for on-line fans….Sega remember these are our computers…not yours! I will use a hacked version when one becomes available if it will get rid of it!

I bought the DVD version and have Vista 64-bit. I have learned that if I open the game through steam, the program closes after I finish a battle (and before I am able to save!) If I open the game from the “games” menu, it never crashes. One bug in this game that really bothers me is the fact that I can group units before a battle, but when I try during a battle it not only won’t group, but it will mess up the groups I already had in place.

Whenever I try to load a battle in Campaign mode the progress bar sticks at around 90% and the screen freezes. The battle launches as I can hear the Audio, however the load screen remains frozen.
Everytime Empire total war quits it freezes unless i quit from teh main menu then i can do what i want BUT after i quit the empire.exe is still active and if i ctrl alt delete the processs it freezes my pc. Any help??

Theres definately a memory issue here, it doesn’t seem to release any during the game so the game crashes eventually. I have also experienced isues with the grouping as some have mentioned, sometimes the groups are entirly arbitary and moving grouped units can lead to some really weird formations, it look like the red arrows are in control! i FIND i HAVE TO RE DRAG THE FORMATION IN ORDER TO MOVE IT AS THATS THE ONLY WAY I CAN ENSURE THEY END UP WHERE THEY NEED TO BE.

Well the long awaited game has finally arrived…Purchased a copy yesterday.already took it back and got a replacement,(Retail stores can only replace an opened copy ya know),and as expected got the same results;ya know, freezing,won;t load,crash,ad infitem.Well the basic requierments are certainly met by my computor,so I wonder are we dealing with a false advertisment issue or do they play test on only the latest and greatest systems? I have similar problem as BG in post nr 17. I bought my “Empire” box copy and instaled. I had the pleasure to play the “road to independence” campaing. After instaling the patch I can run the game in campain map but as son as I enter the battle view it crashes and then my vista says that there was “some” problem… Crap…

@ #104, I had the same problem for a while. I fixed it by changing my Steam download settings to 56k. Ok well it felt good to fix that problem but now I am getting the same problem as #117 and others. “Steam servers are too busy, blah, blah, blah.” Sometimes the message pops up before I can even get to Disc 1. I can’t find a fix to this problem and it appears no one else has found a fix either! I’m using dial-up currently as I’m at home for spring break but hopefully when i go back to school and get access to high speed internet, the problem will disappear. *wishful thinking*

Crashes during Road to Independence whenever I try to engage a certain British fleet out of the Carolinas. Whenever this particular fleet tries to intercept me, attack me outright, or I try to engage them, it just crashes. I am having no problems other than that so far.

I’ve installed it on my Vista laptop now, and it ran fine the first few days or so after I installed yet, yet since then Steam has apparantly downloaded a few things to do with ETW (updates for the game or itself? I dunno), and I have not been able to play anything in ETW since, battles, campaigns, saved games. It just gets half way through the load screen then crashes and stops working.
This is pissing me off now, is there anything I can do to stop this?

The game is a shambles. I have lost whole fleets as unplayable due to crashes and ‘running aground’ on islands. I was about to finish a grand campaign but when I take Egypt the game crashes again and again and again.
The silence from CA and Sega is ridiculous. They have sold a faulty product and taken our money for something that is unplayable. My PC is a beefy dual 3.33 with GTX 280 and still laggy, crashing and usless. I want a patch quickly and no more mute PR mails from CA/Sega!
Incidently, if you have a 2nd disk lkoad problem, try reinstall from scratch. This time it went through OK and Steam went from saying ‘Ready in 4 days’ to @ready in 20 minutes’.

Disk 2 will not load. What kind of program will load disk 1 but not disk 2? I am really disappointed with the vendor. I will be taking this back and to hell with them on any future purchases.
The cutscenes of duels,victory and other ones are very buggy they stop,skip the sound is awful.My comp config is good i run the game in high whit no problem but the cutscenes are the same people whit way better computers have the same problem.

hi have played a lot of these games and was pleased with the game to begin with but i have now got to around turn 25 and i end turn and the microsoft politely informs me the game is no longer responding and boots me out to windows screen telling me its looking for a solotion but of course does sod all,i dont expect to pay 40 odd pounds for a game to have to put up with this i just want to play it i dont want anything to do with steam and would like an opt out after my code is authenticated yes the game is great but if u cant get passed turn 25 i will just go gewt a refund and play something a bit more reliable

i play as British, it crash after about 20 to 35 turns.
and i cannot reload the save game, it will crash once i reload.
It also seems to crash when i play naval battles with reinforcemnet. It crach when i click, try to access my reinforcement ships.
Steam is horrible, just have the original CD to run the game. This will protect CA from piracy. Good news, so far no working copies of fake Empire exist in Asia yet.
I really hope CA release the patch soon, i wait 3 years for this and it is really disappointing. Medival 2 and kingdoms runs so prefect, never have any issue.

When I get to a certain stage in the War for independance the game crashes to windows whenever i win a battle. I have tried fighting manually and autoresolve still crashes. Updated all my drivers and started campaign again from scratch still happens.
OK, found solution for ONE problem concerning game crashing when entering from campain map to battle map. It seems that problem is caused by localization (in my case polish one)so for all those people that use POLISH veriosn of E: TW (on Vista in my case), if you have that problem change your language in steam menu. Clic RMB on the game title and then properties (w?a?ciwo?ci) and set the language to english. Game still is ABNORMALY unstable, it’s almost funny to see that it’s posible to realase so bugy game! Ha! You guys are lucky with your random crashes to desktop. I have those random crashes as well but my computer just shuts down completely(I’m suspecting a memory leak error but hopefully the guys at Creative Assembly are on it – and if you’re not: Get the f… off the couch and get to work!!). I’ve ruled out all the usual suspects like overheating and faulty memory – and I can run Crysis like it’s my bitch for days on end with no troubles at all for crying out loud!

when ever i try to install Empire Total war it gets stuck on Creating local game cache files.
Below that it says Preparing Empire Total War files for install.
The loading bar is full and yet it stays there I try to cancel install and steam freezes up.
I have tried every solution i can find ranging from restaring/reinstalling steam and the game to giving the steam.exe a desktop icon and giving it the dvd drive as a target and non of them are working.

Re comment 153, I;ve been getting graphics errors as you describe since the update but it doesn’t crash the game or the computer and eventually stabilises. I’m going to try rolling back my graphics drivers from the latest nvidia.

First off, during the begging steps of the installation off the CD it take quit a while for the game to load all the cache file, then when it finally come to installing the game, it just freezes and won’t respond.

Mine is not the same I am having app crash when I try playing the Grand Campaign. i can and have played all the way through the road to independence campaign, with no crashes or problems. I have updated drivers and even bought xtra memory. I believe that we should get a refund, be able to keep the game and of course be able to play it, if and when they fix all the bugs. As for stream, cats out of the bag, peeps have pirated the game now loose steam so we can play. Oh yeah and if anyone has any other ideas for fixing my problem, let me know. lol
Hey i had same problems with game crashing at certain points in the campaign looked on the net a bit seems to be the latest nvidia drivers so downdating fixed my problem.
Well in about 11 days or less I will know the whole truth about this game My new computor will arrive with the latest hardware,new i7 max ram the top rated graphics card.Hopefully everthing will be fixed by then,but if my new machine runs it then people have an issue with minimal requierments incompatability.No one should really expect to have to upgrade just to play a game,we would not have bought it..Soo we will see and by then the companey will give our money back or else…B.B.B. is free lawers not.

right.i finally got to play through a whole grand campaign.i ‘cured’ the ctd’s on the a.i turn by watching to see which opponent locked up then going back to a previous save and wiping that nation out.it started with the inuit, then persia and finally sweden.the ctd’s regarding ships i circumvented by ignoring that ship/fleet.
bloody annoying, having to take time out to destroy these nations and having to save very regularly.and to be honest after playing through completely i don’t think it’s worth it.lots of other annoying stuff, like units that just walk through the gates in your forts during a siege then one unit jamming the door open . carefully placing your army in relation to the enemy positions only to have a.i reinforcements turn up anywhere on the battlefield without any relation to their position before the fight started, units disappearing and units that won’t leave buildings when ordered.on a plus note i’ve never had a problem with steam.i was going to send it back but if they patch it well and it works it should be good.
Even when this game runs it is the glitchiest game I have ever encountered.
I had to disband an entire fleet and army because they were stuck between land and sea while boarding.
Can’t figure out how to get a unit to defend a fort with the integral guns.
Can’t figure out how to get a unit to crouch on the correct side of a wall. (They always crouch on the wrong side.)
Vessels on the strategic map that can’t be attacked for some reason.
Naval battle results that show no losses on either side yet you fleet sinks on the strategic map.
The land battle ratings are laughable. I have completely decimated the other side yet the battle is rated a a close victory.
Enemy generals that run ahead of their troops on the tactical map and get shot to pieces by my artillery.
In diplomacy, do other countries ever offer you anything even close to a fair trade?
Oh yeah, I demolished the wall of a fort, won the battle and took possession. 5 Turns later the fort is attacked and the wall is still down even though it doesn’t show as repairable on the strategic map.
I’ve downloaded steam and Empire total war (ETW) as i go on steam click on the ‘my games’ tab and click launch as it launches it laods up and all that happens is a white screen comes up and nothing happens after 1 minute an error report came up, and sends me back to my desktop… before i rebooted my computer it used to load and still a white screen, the game mouse was there and i could hear the sound but no image.. still white screen PLEASE REPLY SEND AN EMAIL TO kezishere@msn.com PLEASE IVE BEEN WANTING TO PLAY THIS FOR NEARLY A WEEK AND… i tried it on my brothers laptop and it loads properly and he clicks on the grand campaign and loads then crashes and closes ANY SOLUTIONS EMAIL ME TO kezishere@msn.com

I’ve found some annoying things in this as well, I agree totally with Will (item 174) and I have also found some others.
If a unit is on a bridge, other units will not cross it but go to the next nearest crossing as if a hostile unit was blocking, of course you don’nt know that as its to late once youve clicked on a desination. So a lot of ‘restore game’ going on!
Fleet actions, I attacked a fleet of three 74 gun ships, and a couple of 32 gun frigates. i had 18 first and second rate ships…apparently it was a close victory, I didnt loose a ship! What bugs me is that time and time again ships surrender and then disapear when the final results are declared, I once left a trail of seven surrenderred ships, none of wich were sinking, I gained zero and it was labeled close!!!!! If your playing as a small nation, capturing ships is essential…bloody idiotic…The royal navy depended on the ships captured. Also if i attack with a fleet of 18 first rates, why would a couple of frigates want to engage me when i attack them? In reality they’d run like hell knowing I’d never catch them…
good game, but it needs some tweaking before it gets to be great….still bombs a lot as well.

i play the grand campaign with the french. at 1790 the game crash when the other countries play their turn.also,
many crashes happen when i play land battles (specially if i command over 5-6 units…) and when this happens i get this note: “error: not enough video memory” if i remember correctly…
i know for sure that my PC is far more than able to play this game. so whats gonna be now? is a patch gonna fix all this “memory” issues and crashes or we just gave away our money for nothing?
When I play “single battle” it’s all fine, but when I play campain, the comment-lady/dude starts talking, and the camera starts sliding over the map, but all of a sudden the camera freezes and she keeps on talking for a min or so, and then all goes quiet. Only solution is to [Alt]+[Control]+[Del]…

The crashes in the game have nothing to do with system Specifications. Mine are as follows:-
Motherboard:- Asus Extreme Rampage 2
CPU – Intel i7 940
Memory – 8 GB Corsair dominator running @ 1600 Mhz
GPU – 2 * GTX 280 running @ 701/1538/1166 in SLI mode
Vista 64 service pack 1
I have updated and used all versions of my GPU drivrs but the game is still very unstable and crashes all the time.
One minute I will get 50 fps on max settings then the next 20 on Low settings!
Thats not to mention all the little flaws in the game like dodgy trade routes, nations not using naval landings etc.
The fact of he matter is CA have released a game which is not fit for purpose and it will take a very long time to develop and patch this game so it works the way it should and the way we all expect it to.
What kills it is i paid £40 for the privelage of playing this game and i feel as though i have been robbed!

Custer, I’ve found the help can slow down things when they’re talking in my battles. Switch it off if its crashing the game.
Crashing.. oh crashing.. Road to independence.
I can play the battles for 2-3min smoothly.. then suddenly.. a freeze.. nothing is moving.. Sounds are still working. I gotta Ctrl-alt-del and shut down etw.
Before the patches the game crashed in the Grand Campaing window.. every time I clicked it. Now I can play for like 5mins.. and it crashes.. Naval battles crash the game instantly.

When I start the game in steam, it stays about 30 seconds blanc. Then the cursor changes in a game-arrow. Suddenly he finds an error, and my computer tells me: ” Empire Total War doesn’t work anymore, we’re working an a solution, and will warn you when a solution is found ” (maybe not those exact words in English, it’s a translation out of Dutch).
I havent even seen the playscreen of the game, very frustrating… I do have Vista, do you think this would be the reason? Does someone recognize this problem, and found a solution, or do I really have to wait for that patch?

The naval side of the game is very iffy, if I selecta fleet or a port with ships in it it it takes over a minute to to access, I have had fleets that became totally none responsive and or crashed the game trying to access them, oddly the armies and cities never have this problem? has anyone else experienced this?

Steam downloads a patch.. but does the patch have an installer.. ‘cos steam just says 100% ready after the download has finished.
and in the steamapps folder.. the empire.exe version is still 1.0.0.0..

I want to load my game, but when I do, it just closes and says: Empire Total War is not responding. I can’t even play it anymore. Help?
They really should have waited another six months before releasing this game. There are multiple problems if you can get the game running. Fleets you cant click on or the game crashes, Units that cannot be moved, the ai will occasionally freeze up in a battle, multiplayer is inaccessable, videos that glitch. However the biggest problem by far i found is in playing the grand campaign. I have played halfway through two. First as the french until the year 1735 when i cant end my turn because the game crashes with a white screen of death. I tried reloading previous saved games but always in winter of that year i cant end the turn. I thought that was just a fluke so i played the campaign as sweden and got to summer of 1751 before the exact same problem happend again. There are a ton of errors in this game. Empire total war is not worth buying!

O well I needed a new computor anyways,but some people are stating that their games are working? I guess ya have to have the perfect storm of hardware and software,along with a little luck
I got Empire Total war completely installed. When ever I try to actually play it though, I get a microsoft error report before the game even starts. For over a week I’ve been F**KING around with this game trying to get it to work. Somebody help me.

I’ve saved games in the usual in-game way and they do not appear in the laod game list – why? The saved game is there in the doc & sets\blah blah blah\save_games – its there but just not visible in either the load game on the front end menu or the in-game load game list. And whilst I’m at it WHY do I have to go burrowing in docs & sets to remove old games that have ceased to work with the ‘white screen of death’

Also exceed min specs, not blazing but comfy duo core AMD +4200 with 2 gb ram and ATI 1950…… course we all know it’s this pantload game’s the problem. I think I found a solution for my problems (crashing all the time during battles or when clicking on fleets). If you have 2 GB and are running Vista, change your page file size. Give it 3000 – 4000 MB range. Helped in my case.

I have had loads of fun on this game, but i am one of the few people who haven’t had a problem at the start. I have only just recently got a problem with empire.exe crashing on me when i ever touch sea units on the American map. I can play with land units and sea units on every other continent but America any ideas? i have tried the post above about page files, but unfortunately didn’t work for me.

Beginning to actually enjoy this game. Turned out the random crashes I experienced were caused by an overheated CPU, so keep in mind that this game is a complete CPU-buster and clean out those fans! I did and haven’t had a serious crash since.
But alas, as pretty much everyone agrees the fleets and naval combat is completely FUBAR. I get crashes to desktop sometimes when I try to merge fleets and crashes everytime I try to start a naval engagement with reinforcements. We need a maritime fix!

OK, I took John’s advice (comment 188) and things are a lot better with regards to the game crashing during battles and I seem to be able to hold 40 – 60 FPS with the graphics options turned all the way up. The game still occasionally crashes, especially when it comes to large scale navy/land battles. My biggest gripe with CA is their lack of updates with regards to patches/fixes. The memory leaks still need to be addressed which I believe is causing the majority of issues with this game.
It’s a shame because this is/will be a good game but in the future I will wait for the game to be released and see what the score is before I hand over my hard earned £40!

tenoch, I’m not certain at present that any configuration will stop it crashing. I have 3Gb memory on a dual core 2Ghz system with an XFX 8600GT 512Mb video card. It still crashes and this is comfortably over the spec required for minimum settings at which I play it. It still crashes every 8 rounds or so so saving every round is a must. I can’t even get past round 145 or so anyway as the crashes are more like every round and the fleets become unusable. Don’t rely on the auto save at the end of each turn as it seems they have changed it in some way. I loose whole rounds if i DON’T SAVE MANUALLY…
Wait until they fix the bugs then spec for the perfomance you want. I’ve seen the graphics they tout on the advertising but I haven’t been able to to get close to anything like that., I’m stuck with the minimum settings.
To the people that made ETW:
I hope you can see the irony of all this. From what I hear on the net, this game has been pirated anyways regardless of your use of Steam and that the pirates actually have a patch out that removes more bugs, and making the game more stable then the piece of crap I bought. How’s that for irony? You guys decided to go this route to ensure you grabbed as much cash as possible, and not only was the game pirated, but you now will probably lose even more money in the future because of how buggy this stupid game is then if you just would have put the game out the old fashioned way. Who fumbled the ball on this? If you tell me you wouldn’t have made money that way, then how did you manage to generate all the sales for ETW? When you put out a GOOD product people will buy it, when you do this crap for the sake of sucking up more cash, people will ditch your product next time around, like I will. Simple business practice and whomever doesn’t get it at your company should get the pink slip for this debacle. Yes, my game keeps crashing too to the desktop after ending a campaign turn for what it’s worth.

I’ve been running the game without any issues until I got to around 62 turns. You can imagine the countries I’ve invaded and how long it’s taken with the slow loading times. Suddenly after 65 turns my game won’t load. I’ve got some old saves turn 65, 64, 62, 22. Only turn 22 game save will load anything above 60 fails. I’m thinking this wasn’t tested by the developers. I need a fix otherwise I’m going to have to go back to turn 22 and what happens when I hit get above 60 turns again. Fricking frustrating after about a weeks worth of play.

ive installedd the game and done the steam up dates fine not the slightest of glitches or problem but when i load the game it gets to mian menu then i choose grand campign or battle but when it goes to loading screen it gets half then goes back to about 1/4 of the way and then keeps flicking in betwwen them two i can here the game playing but can’t see it i have not tried reinstalling it but will soon although every other website i visited says this does not help inm not ver good at computers and what inside but when i read all the labels on the front of it they say i have all minimum requirments i also found away to check my graphics card and it is apparently compatible according to sega’s website hope someone else knows the solution if you do post on this website and they should email me it thanks from me

I’ve got a lot of problems when playing ETW. I was getting kicked out of the game and the error messages were something about Memory.dll; this happened when I was selecting big naval fleets. Somehow I got passed them by zooming out as much as possible then selecting the units.
But with this error I can’t do nothing; no matter what I do, when I end the turn and the other players are taking their moves, it just kicks me with this message:

I run vista 64bit. It runs fine for a few turns, then will lock up, and eventually pc will re-start.
Sometimes also it will lock up and I get huge mad colours on the screen like mad pink triangles etc. Its not fault with gpu as its a gtx 260 and plays everything else fine.
I was using most up to date drivers, i rolled back to the previous and its still the same.
every time 3 or 4 turns of playing normally than bang. The game is unplayable. Have tried in sp2 mode, no change.
complete waste of money. I hope to god someone has the answers as what part of the game i get to platy is great.

This is similar to other posts but when playing the Road to Independence, I end my turn and nothing happens. The game just sits there. I reloaded a previous save and the same thing happens. Any solution?
I got mine to install and run, but whenever I try to load a battle/campaign the loading screen gets halfway through and then stops (keeps jumping between two points but is stuck). I let it run for half an hour and it still didn’t load.
As a longtime game beta tester and gamer, all I have to say: shitty job CA.
Tested this game on a range of machines and it has loads of issues on all configurations, regardless of minimum build or a Phenom quad-core with 8 gb’s of memory and 4850×2 for graphics.
They should be even more ashamed because of 2 very simple reasons:
1. Most issues are caused by the totally useless Steam deployment method and copy protection
2. I am in NO way supporter of piracy, but the cracked versions proved to be far more stable and playable than the official version, that I actually payed for – and couldn’t properly enjoy.
So CA…bad bad job.

Same problem with the loading screen here. When I start the next land battle, the battle starts, but the loading screen is still there, tha bar flickering back and forth.
I had this before in the campaign, but this time it seems it comes always…great new patch, LOL.
I hate autoresolving battles, so either it works somehow or i wont play further
@228: I had the same problem with swedens turns sometimes, but if you have patience it will continue. Once it took me nearly 10minutes, but the game does not crash, it just hangs for some time.
Can download game fine, but always freezes on opening credit screen, nothing helps but rebooting (same as #13)
I get the same problem. Steam works fine but on opening credit screen it freezes. Running Windows XP but have high end gaming rig.
My apologies to anyone one who still can’t play this, it must make those of us that can to a degree irritating.
I’m curious about what speck of PC i’d need to run this at full tilt. Right now everything runs at the lowest settings on a dual core 1.8ghz 3Gb with an 8600GT graphics. If I want everything switched on, what will it take? has anyone one achieved this?
As for on going issues:
City walls cannot be repaired as mentioned by someone else.
Units occupying bridges blocks them for all sides.
AI nations never convoy troops.
Artillery will keep firing even when told not to, or move. melee mode seems to stop them.
Advancing whilst grouped looks like the red arrows on a bad day.
Surrendered naval units disapear.
Reinforcing armies come on in dribs and dabs, whats wrong with with the medieval model?
Cavalry is as dumb as as wood and will happily stand and get shot down to a man.
Fallen units end up either floating of buried in the landscape.
Seleting and moving agents where there are troops tends to move the army rather than the agent!
Units grouped and moving move at unit pace rather than the slowest unit in the group, generals always wind up in front of the line.
If you aquire either a country or a dependancy all their units disband….why?
nations declare war on you despite facing overwhelming local opposition, and then do nothing? Surely it should be a prelude to an all out attack!
France after the revolution retain the white royalist uniforms, new units should be in blue surely?
The line formation puts most of the cavalry on the left?
The formations are a straight copy of the older games, where of the formations of the period?
The list is endless…
Bought at Best Buy, installed from disc, use Steam to run. Have brand new i7 machine (Vista 64), 6GB RAM and Nvidia ‘295 card – ALL video stuff at max. Game runs and looks great, but I get crash every time a battle finishes in the Independence campaign. Drivers are latest and other games run fine. ETW needs a patch.
Great, new patch installed and i cannot load any saved games! I can’t play past round 165 in any case but at round 144 wich is what I was on, this is bloody infurriating.
Isn’t this what the patch was supposed to fix? Why do i not have the option to stop these updates until i’ve had a chance to review the impact on those who like to be on the bleeding edge? Even Microsoft gives me a choice about patches!!!

I thought I had cracked it. Had it working for several days, seemingly faultlessly. Then in Independence, having got to 1821, 4 years short of the term, it crashes after some battles in Virginia. My system is powerful and works with all other applications.
After the appalling installation problems, this is now unacceptable. I will now have a go at another episode but playing with the knowledge it may crash just at the key point or end is the worst way to play games.
Totally unacceptable so far and SEGA and Steam need to sort something out. The game itself is superb but games must be playable and reliable and this one isn’t!!
Hi me again,Ray, 3 weeks later and still cant get game to work. It freezes at the single player screen, tutorials or campaign. the bar gets about half way and then starts to shudder. I have to ctrl alt deleat then btdt. I actually envy those of you who have seen a bit of the game. The update of the 25th made no difference ! Any helpful suggestions will be most appreciated.

Hi, I downloaded the game from D2D and it usually works fine, but at random times while im playing, usually while im in a battle or have just finished a battle and have returned to the campaign map, the game crashes and it says it is “not responding”. Its very irritating. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated. does anybody know how to fix the issue with the weird loading occurrence. This is when any of the game options loads half way and stops then you hear the people talking in the background as if it had loaded completely?
During the battle map Empire crashes the computer after 30ish minutes of play. The game seems to work but if a battle runs longer than 30mins the computer just completely powers down with no warning, no error message, nothing, just a total power loss to the tower.
Up to date drivers and game, but Empire is definitely the cause.
I bought Empire Total War and I got it downloaded, but when I open the game it sits there for a wile thinking than after five minutes it goes on to show the movie beforehand and it is glitchy (sound and picture) once i get past that I try playing the game andit halfway loads than the load bar starts going back and fourth spraticly.
I have all the minimum system requirements, and have recently bought PC tools Registry Mechanic and it fixed just under 4,200 problems on both of my drives, and i just updated my video card driver. I recently had to do a system recovery of my hard drive because of a horible virus, but that was like a week befor i bought the game.

Every second naval battle crashes not just the game but the computer itself. It is also after the battle has been won which is even more exasperating. As previous comment noted it is no way to play a game when a positive result on the battlefield is totally negated by game glitches. Access to Trade scroll also crashes computer. Other bugs are common.
CA must be joking. After the Steam debacle the ongoing bugs are totally unacceptable. Hasn’t anyone told CA about the value of brand loyalty? They are busy absolutely trashing their own brand. It is crazy.
I think I found the solution of the loading bar going half way and then goes back and forth. I have done some reseach and came to the conclusion that it is the graphics card. After looking through data, everyone who has the same problem has a graphics card made from the same company-ATI. Therefor i suggest that you get a new graphics card from a different brand then ATI if your computer allows the compatibility.
Hi i get the application crash (sorry empire total was has encountered and error and needs to close) during battles. It is only on like the third turnof the campaign, the battle runs for a while then just crashes. All my drivers and everything are up to date, i have a more than adequate video card, doesnt look like its graphics related. I dont know wtf is going on and i cant fix it….frustrating when u buy a new game and dont even get to play it…. can any1 help me fix please? or give me some clues.
I have been able to get to around turn 80 in the grand campaign, and now it crashes to desktop saying the game has stopped working. I have plenty of pc power/cpu/gpu/ram etc… i have vista 64bit. I can get the game to go maybe one or two rounds at a time if I play it with steam Offline but then it crashes. Also I crash every time now, as there is a gigantic battle at a fort i am defending, I can get about 3/4 of the way threw defending and then it crashes… you would think it would get faster as more people die, but apparently not…I also tried admin/run in xp sp2 mode and it crashes almost instantly.
I have the exact same problem as Sam above. I thought this was the help section…seems to be a whole heap of problems here that seem to be getting worse. Sorry to drag the lazy game makers away from their shinny new lambos but things are BROKEN we would all like something fixed so do it! Your new patches BROKE a decently running game…get it right already we all paid good money for this shit!

i can get around the ctd after a battle problem by turning off the sound completely (which tells me it is sound related problem???)
i can get around the insufficient video memory problem by allocating more system ram – to do this please refer total war center website.

i have so far also just turned off the sound just prior to exiting the battle map and entering the campaign map. this has worked for me so far (avoiding CTD) and i have been able to progress further than 1766.
Im going back to Windoze xp man this is ridiculous vista 64bit is a great program unfortunately i dont think the dev support is ever going to get to the lvl I expected…see how that goes also have to wait till i have some more bandwidth on Wed so im stuck for a couple of days!

Crashing after 1750. Always happens when i attempt to occupy city on map. Have been able to work around by not involving generals. But this does not always work. Have SLi / Quad core rig and 4gb high end RAM, so should be no issues. Running on Vista 32 bit. Have reloaded on new user, turned off SLI and still crashing. Not good. Anyone got same problem?
Well I changed the sound back to Windows default and it seemed to have stopped 90% of the crashes….then i got a not enough video memory….but that’s only happening very infrequently..But yeah sound was def causing sum big problems!
About half way into the campaign, every time I select a ship the game crashes to desktop. Totally unplayable. The game designers should be embarrassed at releasing a game which plays like it was still in the development stage.

When I go to register the game with Steam a message appears saying the Cd key is not valid outside of Thailand.

The game installed fine, but it crashes with monotonous regularity. Very often whilst loading a campaign battle, the bar freezes in the middle then starts flickering abck and forwards rapidly. Now though it’s getting worse, when I try and click on a fleet generally it crashes. After going through the AI turns it crashes.
I’ve had mesages like ‘insufficient video memory to run game’ which is complete bollocks. 2 gigs of RAM a 512 dedicated graphics card and a 3 GHz processor, and stacks of room in the HD(s). Now when it crashes it just says it has encountered a problem and had to close.
Rather annoying as I have to repeat almost every battle twice!

I popped into a few games shops yesterday, empire total war games on pre owned in abundance….
I’ve told anyone who’d listen to stay away for the time being. The shop guys can’t get it to run stabley either, the systems they we’re citing made mine look like a museum piece and they’d been interchanging graphics cards! On not one rig has it run without crashing.
Upgrading will not stabilise this game….

just so you all know there is hope, mine used to crash but I did a couple things to improve stability like rollback the nvidia drivers and have only the bare essentials run on my computer while playing
i turn off automatic superfetch in vista so i actually have some extra free ram.
i have to turn off sound b4 the battles end to avoid a sound related crash
i have to put in a special >2GB switch so the program doesnt run out of video memory…as stated prior.

I crash every couple turns during the A.I. turns. It’s always a minor nation near the end, so I end up watching it for like 2 minutes to just be disappointed. Sometimes if I load the game and do things differently it works. Also whenever I click on a boat for the first time each turn, it stops everything for about 30-45 seconds to load it.
I installed Empire total war successfully, steam also, the latest patch was also installed by steam the first time i logged in. I have a vostro 1500/vista 32 with sigmatel audio codecs, the game starts off fine however with no sound & when i exit my sound card appears to have stopped working, no sound file works. Restarting vista solves this but launching empire total war again leads to the issue

To all who have that bug with the start screen “freeze”:
I don’t know what caused that bug, but it’s actually no real freeze. I had my pc running having that freeze, looked for it after 10 minutes…nothing happened. So after 45 minutes I looked again and it worked, so the time for loading is just quite long, 10-45 minutes.
What’s surprising me is that I did not have that bug until today, everything was fine yesterday. And believe me, I didn’t change anything.
And here’s another thing I found out:
After I had it running and closed again, it was a normal loading time after
So if you got that bug with the freezing screen at the intro, just give your computer some time (at least 3/4 hours) and everything will be fine.
I hate this. Game will not respond in naval mode. I cant even do the tutorial. HELP. This never should happen. I will never buy another total war game until about a year or two after it comes out, maybe then the bugs will be fixed.
ok asmto the sund problem, i had it with rome: total war nd note its only in the opening movie with the man with the telescope then i skip it coz it borin anyway… yea with tome it happened, i ignored it nut then my old comp could not play medieval total war 2, so i got a whole new computer and it was perfect, it ran rome perfect and medieval 2 perfect, however empire is now laggy again on this comp with white screen error, but i can run medieval two on ultra quality and this one hardly on low. surely you shouldn’t need a super mammoth computer just to play it without errors. do i need to upgrade my computer, i thought it was good, becuase thats what your white screen error suggests, or shall i re-install it (FROM DISC) any solutions please e-mail me at dan666murphy@hotmail.com
I am having big problems with ETW saved games. I have two campaigns going on. First I started one with United Nations. I got to somewhere around year 1780, and now, suddenly… I can´t load that game. The game crasahes about 75% into loading, and vista says “Empire total war stopped working”.
So I started one with Sweden. Around year 1740, there was a revulotion and I sided with the rebels. When I defeat the government and capture Stockholm, the game crashes and once again, vista says “Empire total war stopped working”.
Is there any way to fix this problem?
I launch Empire Total war and it says launching Empire Total War but after a few seconds it stops and nothing happens. I’ve tried a bunch of times to launch it but it just refuses. eloh I already finished road to independence chapter 1-3 but when I play the chapter 4(United states) it loads the a little sec. it turns into a white screen and then the debug is shown could anyone help me pls help me.

I had been running this game with no problem in Grand Campaign as Britain for about a month. About a week ago, tried to start a new grand campaign. The game crashes to the Windows error box every time I tried to start a new Grand Campaign. This seems to be the same problem affecting #42,59,74,166,170 and 299 above. I uninstalled the game, then tried to re-install it. The reinstall was 36% done after 4 hours then crashed. I have owned every TW game except Shogun and they have all been fine–but of course, Steam wasn’t involved. What a terrible decision to use Steam. I was looking forward to this game for like 2 years. Very disappointing. CA should offer a Steam-free version for all who have already bought the game.
Total War makes an error massage / crashes when I try to load a large saved game. That means i have around 70 regions on the world map. if i go back some savegames it works agian and then it crashes again…. dammit ^^

To Kieran and company, as much as I loved R:TW, as much as I showed it with great enthusiasm to others, and got them to buy it, too, as much as I enjoyed M:TW2, and again convinced others of its merit, I’m taking Empire back for a refund. I spent at least 8 hours this weekend, on 4 different install attempts, only to find online that dozens of others have the same problems. Only to find that what one person offers as a solution for the problem I’m seeing doesn’t work for me. Only to see that even if I were fortunate enough to get this game installed, I look to be setting myself up for (inconceivably) even more frustration with game crashes, broken functionality, and a virtual lifetime of selling my soul to Steam, again and again, simply to get updates to fix a product that was broken when released. I’m not going to spend a third or more of all of my spare time, trying to compensate for your decision to go with Steam. I’m not going to let broken software and overzealous online distribution schemes run my PC or my life. New Total War games will not be bought by me, nor anyone I can convince to avoid these headaches (which, believe me, won’t be difficult to do). I hope you made lots of money for all your efforts; maybe it will make up for that painful pit you’re feeling in your gut, for making so many people unhappy with your product, its packaging by Steam, its overall unpleasant experience for so very many people.
Hi i bought the game and tried installing it from the cd, but when the installation is about 50% it stop showing the progress and the estimated finishing time just keeps on getting higher. i’ve left it twice for a long time , but when i get back the estimated finishing time went from 22 minutes to like 4 hours!!! help plz!!!

Very ANNOYED & PISSED OFF, I have been hanging out for the release of ETW and I’m really disappointed!!! I must say that I was very dubious when i found out that Steam had their finger in this pie.
I envy you people that even just get to play half a battle. Once I finally install everything I go to play it and I get a white screen then it crashes. With the blank screen when loading see if you have let the firewalls except “Steam”. I also needed to change graphics cards as well but I only got as far as loading the game before it froze, like some of you know when the bar reaches half way and then jumps backward and forwards.

hey good news guys (hopefully) i went and searched around, and the game people are doing a run for many errors right now. some people say it will be either sunday or monday wen it comes out. so stay keeping patient.
The only issue I’m having is when I click on a fleet of ships, the freaking game crashes. Clicking on one ship with no fleet runs ok (sometimes). but yeah, its a big problem when you can’t select your ships.
I install the game with no problem but when i lunch it there is not text in the whole game just boxes with no text in it i really not know who to fix that.

Hey Moe – sounds like its an issue with your graphics card drivers. I’d recommend the following;
1) Update your drivers
2) Re-install DirectX
3) Downgrade your operating system to XP.
…thats what I’m trying next. If ETW doesnt work on a clean sustem running a quad core processor, 3gig of ram and a Geforce 6800 graphics card, i KNOW its the game and I’m just going to have to wait for someone to get their acts together and provide a quality product.

I play both Road To Independence and Grand Campaign (as Britain) until finish.
But there are some problems :
- I can’t activate one of my fleet at Gibraltar area. Program freeze and need to be shot down. I play as Britain Empire.
- When I click end turn (as Britain), I have an error while the CPU was running at Spain faction. I followed the CPU move and I found those fleets at the area at Gibraltar cause the problem. It need to be shot down.
- I have an error after I conquer Istanbul / Ottoman. when I click end turn, it need to be shot down.

Well I’ll throw my comment on the fucking pile. It is officially after the 20th when the patch to fix this was supposed to come out, I bought the game, I still get the white screen when I try to load it up. My computer doesn’t give me the chance to just let it sit though, it bring up the little screen that says it ha stopped working and a solution will be found. Everyone says my computer is insufficient,but I have at least 1.5x what the min reqs are on each thing, meaning it should run very, very well . . . which it doesn’t. This is growing frustrating.

When conquering the 15th region in Road to Independence (in 1797) the game announced I had won the campaign conditions and would have to maintain those territories through 1825 to win.
Then the game goes back to the main screen, where it says “continue campaign – single player – multiplayer – options,” Pressing continue campaign only brings me back to the point in 1797 before the seige battle for the 15th region. So, I can’t finish the road to indendance and it feels like all that work was pointless.
Very fustrating.

HOWEVER, when the game was working it was fantastic.
I mean it suffered from absolutley none of the problems described above (it never crashed out, I could play the grand campaign all on very high graphics ect). So it seems i got the only good copy in existance.
the only problems I have are with steam. My internet speed is very very bad. It seems that Steam has detected a patch because all I see in the ‘My Games’ section is ‘download starting’ and it wont let me play MY game untill it has downloaded.
Now this is the problem; it has been saying download starting for about a week and a half now and is not doing anything. Is this because of my shit internet or am I missing somthing?
I would be grateful of any advice.
My solution to all Empire: Total War problems:
Uninstall Steam from your computer (that is, if you were able to install it to begin with).
Place Disk 1 and Disk 2 of E:TW in trash can.
Blow dust off your copy of Rome: Total War and play it instead.
Enjoy.
Seems everything will work fine and then at some point, usually 5-10 minutes into the campaign map, it will just freeze up. It locks up my whole computer.

my game crash the moment I click on the Grand Campaign. It was fine 4 weeks ago! Now, the game just crash every time I click on it. What the hell did the latest patch (dated April 29, 2009) really fix anyway? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! When I click on some of my boats, the game still crash. I read the info about the latest patch and quite frankly, I didn’t have any of those problems listed in there.
After playing several turns in campaign, the written words in the game become distorted and unreadable. Can’t read news or info regarding anything. ??????????
This game is so fucked up . . . I mean really, how many errors can there BE? It has to take work to come up with this many varieties of fail and put them all in the same program. I’m counting at least 5 general crash errors, 2 cutscene errors, 2 gameplay errors, 3 launch errors, and so many different kinds of Steam error that I don’t even keep track anymore. Add to that 4 corners’ newfangled text error and we have a total of 12+ errors in the same game. If I combine all of the PC games I currently own excluding E:TW, I still don’t count that many . . . how the hell did this make it to market? How did reviewers give it any score at all, given that probably 1/3 people can even make the goddamned thing WORK? *sigh* I would really enjoy having my money back on this bullshit
So, i’m playing with maratha confederacy, got all india, portugal region, iceland, prussia lands, sardinia and central ittaly plus 2 islands in america. I also have gibralatar. This going in the year 1770. When i try to end turn, it just ends normally and then, when it is marocco’s time to play, i get whitescreen error message and back to desktop… I have Nvidia and i tried sli and non-sli. it has happened before but now i cant play for a couple of minutes.

I’m having problems with Empire Total War and it’s about my 190th go. Every time I’ve had my go and it’s got to the end of the year, it crashes when I get to the Ottoman flag. It lets me start a new campaign but I can’t get any further on the current campaign I got so far on, due to it crashing. I’m playing it on Windows Vista. Is anyone else having this problem?

I love total war, spent probably hundreds of hours playing rome and medieval.
My family barely has the money for empire but i think “fuck, it’s worth it for all the time i’m sure i’ll enjoy playing it”.
I bought it 4 days ago, and i still haven’t got to play.
I have dial-up, so i had to leave my computer on and internet on day and night to download whatever steam needed me to.
i finally get to the game.
i try to play the road to independence, and despite having all the system requirements, the loading bar gets to 3/4ths completed and my computer shuts down.
I try that about 4 more times turning off more and more other processes on my computer until there’s nothing else going on.
and it still doesn’t work and my computer restarts.
I try to do the grand campaign, 3/4ths and my computer shuts off.
Needless to say, I am FUCKING PISSED.
Most of all, i don’t see why the hell i need to be online to play empire, why i need to be forced to download updates, when all i want is to play the game i spent 50 dollars (that i barely have) on.

I can play for a while, no naval battles whatsoever, and the land battles are laggy. I’m running it on Low settings (since I can only pick from low and medium? Even though MTWII and RTW I could play flawlessly in Ultra?). But, after maybe six turns, the game freezes. I hate Creative Assembly. The Total War series were the only computer game I supported, and they stabbed everyone in the back. I hope whoever decided to use the freaking gay Steam crap dies. Slowly and painfully. I hate this.

My game problems arise from choppy intro cinematics and sound, also the game lags during Grand Campaign mode, battle scenes are slow too. I upgraded my memory to 2 GB and that helped with the load times for battles and such, but all the other problems persist. I have all the latest drivers for my graphics card, but its frustrating. I don’t have too many crash issues though when I do have the patience to play it.
Like everyone else, I really loved playing Rome Total War and Medieval Total War, but this game is becoming unplayable.
I experience problems on a regular basis after having saved empire at an advanced timeline (1782, 1799…): after saving the game and trying to reload the next day to keep going empire crashes everytime while loading. It is also not possible to load the “quick save”. it works to load the game at an earlier timeline (like 1756) but it’s very frustrating to more or less fall back to that early stage. any idea? I can’t/won’t keep my pc running for two weeks in a row … thanx marcus
CTD’s every 10-20 turns, though those aren’t a huge annoyance.
My main issue now, is in about 1748 as British, I was zooming in and out on the campaign map, the computer froze completely and I had to re-boot. After several re-boots it still won’t play, either telling my that it is “unavailable” or downloading a massive “update” that takes about 4 1/2 hours to download at 150-170kb/s. I decided to let it finish its download. (It hasn’t finished downloading as of writing).

I get the white screen when I try to launch the game and then it says that it’s not responding. I have all the requirments. The only difference is that I have a 2.20 GHz Intel 2 duo core processor. Would that be a problem.

I can’t click on my navy fleet or I crash. I beat the road to independence and have continued on with the intent of conquering the world as the United States. It’s 1833 (approx. 105 turns) and started building first rate ships. I can still click on the fleet of fourth rate ships, albeit with a 5-10 second freeze. When I click on the first rate ships it’s a 10 second freeze and then crash.
I try to install the game from the disks after installing steam and such. I usually get about a quarter through the first disk and get a BSOD that says something about a driver. The bsod moves too fast and I only see the top part of the message. I’m running an Nvidia 9500 GT with the latest driver. I even tried to roll-back the driver and it still wont work. HELP this game looks really amazing and I want to play it so much!
My probem is a little different. I have played the game for 3 days 4 hours a day etc and today I can not play one turn in the ongoing campiagn. It just doesnt crash it turns my computer off.

hey guys, okay, i found the problem to my white screen error!!!!! turns out i didnt have a high enuf graphics card. u need the 200 sumin one to run it. Only problem is my computers a dell and the computer shiop only had the 200 sumthin one. Now it still goes to the white screen, but its just the music playing and i can actuaklly click on stuff!!! =D i can see anything tho, and ive heard that theyre making a patch to fix it. Ok, so i can’t play any battles…so here are my problems
-when you first open game it takes awhile to get past the copy right crap

This is the most unstable game I have ever bought. Sometimes it crashes if I click on a ship, sometimes if I embark/disembark my troops, sometimes if I click on a port or city and sometimes if I declare war/someone declares war on me/my allies. I’m really pissed off at the lack of support the game has been getting, the last bug fix was on the 1st of May, before that the 30th of April then before that March. This is no time for “Creative Assembly” to take a holiday. I’m also pissed of at PC Zone magazine for the glowing review they gave, no mention of it being totally unstable. Its like we paid good money for a pirate quality game. In these harsh times the Creative Assemble team don’t deserve to survive writing pish software like this and then just abandoning it.
Ive had this game for around 3 weeks now, and i havent had a single issue with it, apart from the odd stutter on the campaign map. Ive loved every second of it. however i come to sit down to play a saved game, and crash, loaded autosave, crash, loaded previous 10 saves all crashed…i have used some of these saves in the past to go back a few turns, im at a loss as to what has changed….and after going through the above issues i think im gonna be looking for a full refund.

I eventually had this game running reasonably stable and was getting between 18 – 40 FPS on maxed out settings..
PC Spec:-
MB: ASUS rampage Xtreme rampage 2
RAM: 6 GB DD3 Corsair Dominator RAM running @ 1600Mhz
CPU: Intel i7 940 (stock speed)
GPU: 2 * geforce 280 running in SLI mode
OS: WIN VISTA 64
I found that overclocking the GPU’s dont increase performance and the game is only about 6 FPS slower in single GPU mode
The game still crashes now & then and is still very laggy on the campaign screen.
Also there are sill some serious graphical bugs when on the battle screen. Some units appear as just a purple/cream colour pixel and all units seem to appear as just a 2d bitmap image until I get close to them and then there full detail is revealed.
I have come to the eventuall conclusion:-
Fuck this game, ARMA 2 is out on the 19th….

Every time I click the “Grand Campaign” button it crashes the game. This only started happening the 2nd time I tried starting a grand campaign. The first time it worked just fine. I uninstalled the game after backing up the game. I re-installed the game and the problem still occurs. I’ve restarted my computer, re-installed directx and still no progress.
This is stupid. Just bought this game for 49.99euros and when I start it, I lose sound on my computer. Even when I exit the game! Why haven’t these bugs been fixed, the game has been out since march?!?

Empire worked well for about two months on a brand new Dell with 3.73 PCU, and two Nvidia 9600’s but suddenly would not let me start a new game. Able to load games from memmory but it crashes every time I select “Campaign” in single player window. I have tried decreasing graphics settings, and reinstalling but without success. I spent $5,500 on a new gaming PC primarilly so that I could continue to enjoy the Total War experience. I am back to playing MTW II for now. Help!

Hi, firstly thanks for all the previous comments which have made me feel better about my own situation. This game crashes for no reason and is about as stable as a one legged donkey. I’m on Vista64 with 8GB RAM, Intel Quad Q6600@2.4g with Radeon 4800 graphics. And it still crashes during every naval battle and some land battles. i give up q9550 @3.4ghz 4gb ram 8800gt game a mess Crashes randomly windows complains and gives lots of different soulutions. I upgraded from e6450 @3.2ghz because game crashed continuosly i have loads of power and still can’t get to used any of the special forces i paid for GONE back to rome total war mod ROME TOTAL REALISM this is the 1st mod ever tried i think its bloody brilliant never buying a game that is not a year old (at least it should be almost bug free)

Installed Empire with little trouble, Finally get to the intro screen after choppy cinematic intro. All of the selection boxes show up with all the background stuff running smoothly… here’s the problem… There is no next in the selection boxes! No matter what I click I just get more menus with no text! I’m wondering if this could be a processor issue or a graphics issue. Any help on what I need to do would be appreciated!

I installed the demo right? So after like an hour of DLing and all that jazz, I started it. It was going all slow in the beginning like the lagging intro right?
Alright so i’m like yeah, lets do this. I open up single player > tutorials > battle tutorial or whatever (tried for many different missions)
Okay now here comes the problem: the progress bar gets to about halfway, the commander starts telling me what to do. I have sound. But the game is still in the loadup screen. The bar is spazzing out between 1/2 done and about 4/10ths done. I can even select and command my army, but the screen that loads the mission is in the way.
This might just be a problem with the demo. I want to know is it wise to just buy the main thing and see if it works? If not, any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Empire worked fine until i got the updates from Steam. After the first one all the money was minus instead of plus and after the second update(most recent one) the game goes to the loading screen (where they have the copyright and company stuff) and gets stuck.

I have steam installed. I insert Empire Total war into the cd drive and it makes the usual sound that there is a disc in there and then upon trying to manually boot the game it makes windows stop responding and I have to either restart windows or restart my computer. I have tried exploring into the disc drive and booting the setup and autorun but both do the exact same thing making windows unresponsive. My system has more than the requirements to handle the game and I’m using vista so I’m wondering if there is now something wrong with my computer or if I have a defective disc.
I have already done a clean wipe on my computer reinstalling my operating system first just reinstalling vista then going to windows xp and then back to vista and I’m still encountering the same problem.

i have a dvd version of the game and after install i try to load and it says empire total war has stopped working and needs to close…cant find any logs on it ..thank you
I’ve had the DVD version for about 3 weeks now and I have tried everything to get it to be stable. I had all up to date drivers installed and the latest update for Vista. I reverted to Nvidia driver 181.22 in the hopes that it would fix. Game dosen’t freeze on the load screens for battles anymore but now stops responding at random times in the game. All my hardware specs far exceed the minimum. I love this game but am a little perplexed at how they let this one out of the barn with this many teething problems
The ONLY thing that got the crashing to stop for me was to run in windowed mode. It still fills the whole screen and the benefit is I can run at full settings as well.

still have not been able to play the game through. there is something screwy about navy combat. sometimes one enemy navy will crash the game when attacked. sometimes in a 5+ unit naval battle you will get a crash once the battle is over.
the crashes make the game unplayable.

I’ve had the game for a few months now, and like most people, I’ve experienced quite a few bugs, crashes, and other problems. But many of the patches have greatly helped to improve the game’s playability; however, my main problem is that whenever I go click to play a grand campaign, the screen goes white and then kicks me out to windows with a message saying windows error. I’ve tried re-installing the game and turning down the settings, but to no avail. So now I can’t even play the game because it always crashes when I try to play a grand campaign! Any ideas, suggestions, or advice would be greatly appreciated.
I can’t get either the developers of the game nor sega to respond or fix the problems with this game. I guess I’ll just have to pursue a legal remedy. Both may want to review the consumer protection act.

I’ve had the game for 2 months. Got it installed and finally fixed on my XP system 2 weeks after I bought it after a nightmare of Steam crap support. A player actually helped me get her up and running.
Now my mobo died and I’m using Vista 64 and the game is stuck at preparing game files for installation screen for hours upon hours only to end up telling me the servers are busy. Steam’s customer service is grossly inadequate. If their headquarters were here on the East coast I’d pay them a personal visit and use my game case to break one of the management members nose. 2 months and i’m still unable to play this pos game that I can’t return because NYS has a law prohibiting returns on opened software.
Every part of the game works except Road to Independence where I get stuck after taking the objective city at the end of chapter 2. No big deal, right? WRONG
Every time (and I emphasize EVERY TIME)I start a naval battle, the load bar fills up but I get a white screen and a crash before I even see the battlefield. Land battles are also sporadically laggy.
I cannot begin to describe how excited I was to get my hands on Empire: Total War. My soul was crushed by Steam, because my best computer has no reliable internet access so I have to use a 10 year old system to enjoy my 50$ investment. Now I can’t play naval battles either (a major factor in my decisioin to purchase the game)

I have finally found a solution to my problem back in #298. Changing language of the game, allowing it to update, and then changing back, allowing it to update again, seems to have solved this problem. I can now start new campaigns with whatever nation I’d like.
You might try this out if you have the same or a similar problem with your game and see if it works for you.

I*ve got two problems.
First one: Playing with Sweden, the game crashed whenever I selected a certain fleet in the American part of the campaign map (directly or from the list-scroll didn’t matter).
Second and more annoying problem: The game crashes whenever I try to load my Netherlands campaign. Makes no difference if I try to load the “quicksave” or my own save. Ironically, I can load all my other saves and did not have the same problem before during the same campaign.
I would appreciate any help, as it took a while to play till turn 47 on a very hard setting, and I have no desire to start over again.

When I try and launch my game it goes to the title screen an then an error pops up and says “Empire Total War has stopped working” and the game crashes.
So basically for me, every time I start up the game, it gets to the Empire Totalwar Loading Screen (with all those company names and stuff like that) and then it crash’s to my Desktop
I uninstalled the game and tried again, and still nothing…mabey its because I need disk 2 in it…
Though I did just remove a mode from the game

Hello, i installed empire total war fine. But every time i try to launch the game a message appers saying ‘empire.exe’ has encountered a problem and says ’send error report’ or ‘do not send error report. I’ve send one and nothing happened. what do i do ?????
Keep getting the white screen crash. I have a gtx275 with updated drivers. The funny thing is, the first game I played using India…I hardly had any crashes even though it took me weeks to complete. My current game is with Great Britain and now its crashing almost every turn
@368 Problem when selecting navies: Build a Sloop, and join it to any navy which causes game crashes. It MUST be a in-experienced sloop, the upgraded ones from naval acadamies etc, seem to not help.
I have tried the game on two machines. I have been playing as Sweden and have managed to get to year 1768. First machine is Vista Core 2 Duo T5550 3 GB Radeon HD3450 second is AMD 64 X2 4800+ Geoforce 9800 GTX Windows XP SP3. Have tried the same games on both machines (including previous saves). In 1767, if I either hit the diplomacy button or end turn I get a CTD (whit screen on the Windows Xp machine and simple CTD on the Vista one). I have heard other complaining of similar issues and have’nt yet been able to find a resolution. It’s time for CA (and all other companies for that matter) that WE are not supposed to Beta test their products, they should do this themselves and ensure that the games are ready for people to PURCHASE them. WE should not have to spend money on defective products that were released prior to them being completed due to some idiotic marketer who has deadlines to meet. Don’t even get me started on Steam…

Hi I have played many Total War games in the past but have never recieved a problem downloading the content. I downloaded both disc 1 and 2 in the correct order as the directions specified. Then I recieved the Steam shortcut and created an account and followed it to the my games tab to where Empire Total War said 100percent ready. I clicked on it and submitted English then I recieved a white screen with the total war cursour in tact. A few seconds later I recieved a message that said Windows is checking a solution to the problem (and it was loading) then seconds later recieved another message saying Empire: Total War has stopped working- A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. But when the program closes we recieve no solution. We tried loading the page 3 or 4 more times and still it did not work, so I redownloaded the 2 discs yet it still did the white screen. So i updated my graphics card and tried it again still the
same problem. I have tooken no steps and will take no more steps into tryin to fix the problem until I hear from you. Please be sure to know I have a Windows Vista computer if it makes a difference. I end the turn at year 1750 and everytime at the loading screen when its Morocco’s turn the game will crash no matter which save game i try to load from, it will still crash at Morocco’s turn to move.
the games stops loading whenever i go into battle mode, land battle are ok sometime, but sea never load it stop loading and then freezes up. very fustrating for a game i love
steam wont even let me open an account with them, i install, update, click on ‘create new account’ and it just closes. thats as far as i get. have spent 6 hours going through my pc looking for possible conflicts or whatever. everything else works perfectly. very strange, perhaps an extreme case of over zealous copy protection were they won’t allow anybody, even paying customers, to play the game!? any ideas, i’m going back to RTW for the mo.

It works perfect I can do enything… exept taking GDANSK.
When I try it the game will crash and it doesn’t matter if I take the city by assault or by auto-battle. I’ll get a screen that I won and then you see your amy walking in the city… well that’s when my game freezes and it just crashes

Mine was working fine, and then I downloaded the Warpath DLC, and it gave me a confirmed popup that it was completed. And now it CTD on launch.

Mine was working fine until Oct. 3. Started CTD after battles when it was loading back to the campaign map. It shouldn’t be any hardware because that has not yet been a problem but I turned down the graphics anyway. Is this due to mods?

Got this game when it came out retail – worked fine for about 1 week – then all of the sudden the game crashes on me – i have a Wind. Vista, Quad 2.66, 4 gigs of DDR2, G Force 9800GT 1g of video – i uninstalled the game and this time downloaded it from steam – i played game on recomended setting and even below that and its still happening – i norm. get one of 2 errors – the program has stoped working properly and needs 2 close – and insufficient memory – any ideas

I bought Empire about the week after it came out. I’m using an acer aspire with vista, intel core2 duo, nvidia gforce 8600m gt, and 2 gigs of ram. The game starts fine, if a bit slow, but then when i start playing (campaign or battles), it freezes. Nothing happens, so I ctrl alt deleat out and it says that Empire total war has stopped working. Sometimes this happens right away, sometimes only after a few turns. I reinstalled steam and Empire several times and it didnt change anything… Any ideas please?

I bought Empire a few days ago and am trying to run it on a brand new PC. 6GB Ram, 4×2.6 processors. 1GB Graphics card. It will start off fine but then randomly freeze. I could be after 2 seconds, it could be after 2 hours. I can’t get out of this freeze unless I turn the power off the computer. How can they have made a game with so many errors, any ideas?

I installed E:TW on my windows xp computer and then installed it on a brand new vista computer that I had bought.It’s scored a 5.9 out of a 5.9 so it’s an awesome computer. My problem is that whenever I start a new campaign, and click on a general, gentlemen, excreta, it crashes. Quick battles work fine. How do I fix the campaign?
My system is the nuts – I changed every setting/drivers and my system shuts down at the menu screen every time. This game is clownshoes!

My comouter is very powerful it can run this game on very high graphics without lagging but i have vista and the game is very unstable. I start to play the grand campagin and after a few minutes the game crashes causing the computer to get a blue error screen or memory dump sumtimes. However, this did happen when i patched the game up via steam, it happened after i patched it happened again and then i patch it again and it fixes. I patched it agiain and now it started again, it annoys me. anyone got any idea of how this happened and how to solve it.

If I were the creative assembly I would disown this game quickly. Or cancel the contract with STEAM what a effing piece of shit it is. I managed to get over 4 hours play in one go a couple of weeks ago. Then steam updated 5 times in a weekend, i looked on the website and there was nothing to say it has happened. I now crash after about 5-10 mins every time. I’m on an 8gb RAM quad core V64 and this happens to me still. How many patches does this need!!
i have a rather original problem,at installation everything went fine, but when i started the campain or any kind of battle, the map turned into some weird form of modern art with lines and figures in all colors of the rainbow, wilst the menu options still worked fine.

I got Rome total war: gold edition (with barbarian invasion) and installed it. It was working fine till my brother tried to “cheat”. He messed with one of the data, map, Imperial_campain files so he could play as spartans (Greek).
The game would know longer start a new campain. So I unistalled it. Now it wont let me install it again? why?
I have got far into american campaign almost won, and now suddenly i can’t load any of my fucking save games! As soon I try it goes to about 15 procent of it and then game shuts down. Same thing happened when I played as Prussia and have dominated whole of europe, then it suddenly didn’t work to load anymore and I had lost my save game forever! Any solution?!
My game has a problem after every battle, every time I win a battle and it goes to loading screen and by halfway, it crashes and goes to desktop saying E.TW had a problem and needed to close. I cant enjoy the aftermath of a realtime battle without it crashing.
Recently bought and installed ETW on my my new laptop-running Windows 7. Game installs successfully, and when I go to run it through steam, it crashes and details say it is a “BEX” problem. I’ve looks all over, and doesn’t seem too many people have had this problem. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Steam several times, and I’ve checked for any driver updates I might need. ETW is just one problem, none of my games seem to want to run from Steam (I’m even running in compatibility mode with XP Sp. 2).
When trying to install Empire Total War from disk, the install freezes after I insert Disk 2 and won’t move on.
I cant even install the freaking game. I have a brand new pc so I have all the requirements. I press install and then it starts to go through the process of installing steam and then it stops and I get a message that says

which the only option for is to click “ok” and then it quits the installation. PLEASE HELP!!!

When the game runs, it runs very smoothly. Great game, great graphics. However, it crashes at random, completely freezing up my system leaving me with no option but reset.
It would seem that people running a 64bit OS and/or using the most recent nVidia drivers are having the same problem. Does anybody know of a workaround to this?

Um Gothika, the solution to yours is on the list at the top. Reinstall Steam in a new location, just back up your save games and game data first.
Anyhow, I bought ETW for my dad who’s playing it on a dual-graphics quad core Win 7 PC…so graphics etc shouldn’t be an issue. However, now and again after a while playing it does what I think people are calling the ‘whitescreen’ – white with grey pin stripes, or once, green with white pinstripes. On other times it just crashes the computer entirely with no BSOD message and a BLACK screen.
On a side note – anyone notice that Steam uses your bandwidth even though you’re not playing online? What the heck is it downloading?

when ever i try to install Empire Total war it gets stuck on Creating local game cache files.
Below that it says Preparing Empire Total War files for install.
The loading bar is full and yet it stays there I try to cancel install and steam freezes up.

The game has been running with no problems since early December until last week when clicking on the diplomacy function began causing the game to crash to desktop. I have removed and reloaded Steam and ETW tice and emptied the registry of all related remains. This bug happens every time diplomacy is attempted as any nation. My PC exceeds the spec by a long way. Love the campaign mode – even though i occasionally get random crashes. However, the multiplayer mode doesn’t work for me at all. I always get the ‘no response from host’ error for every single server I try to join.
My firewall is not to blame and my region is also set correctly. I tried to forward the ports required (27015 and 49181) but it at first did not change the problem. Then after it started saying ‘cannot join: player statistics unavailable’.
Someone please help me sort out multiplayer: this is so frustrating.
Everytime I run the campaign game, or a battle, the menue at the bottom of the screen (with all the unit pictures and selections and minimap) will appear just fine. However, everyting above the queue menue at the bottome (with the cities and where I control the battle units) will appear like stained glass no images and it moves randomly, however i can only see the city names.
I installed Empire and it went fine, until it ran for about 10-15 minutes. Then the screen went grey. The thing is that I have the exact same problem with Rome and Alexander. I couldn’t wait to play it and now it won’t work. =( Please help me.

THE TOTALWAR FOLKS OBVIOUSLY NOT CUSTOMER/USER FRIENDLY. I HAVE GIVEN UP. I ENCOURAGE GAMERS TO BOYCOTT TOTAL WAR GAMES UNTIL THEY PULL THEIR HEADS OUT AND AND GET RID OF THE DEVIL SPAWN KNOWN AS STEAM.
The buildings on the campaign map are not showing up. Also, the buildings in Battle Mode appear at the start, but eventually disappear. I am running on Windows Vista with a 7 month old graphics card and 1 year old computer. Is this a common problem?
Alright- This game is getting annoying, I haven’t had problems in a while, but now I have a good campaign going and I get a crash to desktop everytime I end my turn and it hits the turn of the U.S. the game crashes to desktop. this is extremely annoying and I can say I’m tired of trying with this game. I end turn the other factions run through their turn, the American Turn comes and freezes on the American Flag, and the crashes giving me an error. FIX THE GAME! I am do tired of this.
Well I’ve been playing Empire for a while fine but After I installed Lua script, as I plan to learn it, Empire CTD but I reinstalled empire, AND uninstalled Lua, still CTD. Please help. I LOVE Total war games, but this is retarted.
UPDATE: Geek Squad called me. They have given up trying to make “STEAM” (CREAMED) work. Asked me to pick up my computer. This really bites.
I have not played this POS game since last year. Endless crashes, especially after winning battles, trade scrolls, losing whole armies in ports; these pricks have got to be kidding. Don’t waste your time or money, it is a complete crock.
I can’t play the game, I just bought it yesterday and when I download it, it updates (not even done downloading yet) and it goes to about 15% and then it goes back down to 0% and this happened three times already… Any help please?
I got problem #5 the empire exe. error I tried both solutions and niether of them work, 1 I dont have service pack 2 aparantly i got service pack 3 but it doesnt apear in the list, 2 well number 2 just didnt work hands down….. help?
I also have missing buildings and other graphical errors…My computer is top of the range and I can every other game absolutely fine….
This is the first ever game I have had issues with that are unresolvable…

I’ve been playing this game on and off since it came out without any problems. Started playing it again last week and was going along merrily for a few hours when I get a CTD. Funny thing is it is completely reproducable. In the Americas I simply load some troops onto a ship and then scroll my screen to the right. Freeze – crash.
Ok, I have a problem annoying as hell here! I had just bought a new monitor, and when I was going to change the resolution, the game crashed, and I haven’t been able to play it ever since! it does’nt help deleting the game files or anything, I just receive a windows error message: empire total war has stopped functioning, on my Windows 7 computer, help please!

So I bought a new screen for my computer, and when I was going to change the in-game resolution, the game hangs, and I haven’t been able to start it ever since. Doesn’t helt deleting game files or changing the start resolution using the steam launch options. Does anybody know how to fix this? Please help.
is there any way of playin empire without having to go through steam .. steam is a annoyance as far as im concerned the game seems to run slow and stuttery .. unlike the other games that didnt use steam.

How To Install Empire Total War Without Steam Download?
This is a fix for everyone having trouble installing Empire Total War, and people that are having to download monster dowloads off Steam that take well over 24hrs:
I recently bought the long awaited installment to the Total War Series – Empire Total War. And I like most other fellow gamers had a problem actually installing the game from the game DVD’s.
The instruction manual indicates an internet connection was needed for activation and all i need to do to install was to insert DVD 1 and run autorun and the game would install.
Well as we now all know the normal installation procedure we normally get from installing games is no longer present when trying to install this game on to our systems.
After 1 hour of scouring the internet for a solution and a 25 minute wait for the two game DVD’s to install, i have finally manage to get the game to run not only in online multi-player mode, but also the offline single player mode.
Here is the procedure i followed which i hope will serve as a sort of tutorial of how to over come the problems when installing the game.
1. First of all make sure you are connected to the internet.
2. Insert DVD 1 into your drive, it will either automatically run the DVD or you will have to do it manually dependant on what your system setup is.
3. The first program to install itself on your system will be the much needed STEAM which allows you to get important game updates and access the multiplayer functions (but also is the major problem when trying to install the game from the DVD’s) and is needed to run the game in offline mode as well.
4. Once this has installed, choose a username and password and enter your email address, once this process is done you should be able to access the STEAM control panel. Left click Game on the title menu at the top, left click Activate a product on steam, now enter the code which is on the back of the game manual this will activate the game, for people who have special forces codes do not enter that code here.
5. Now the Empire: Total War game will appear under the My Games tab, it may or may not of started to download the game off the Steam server, if it is downloading click the stop download then close the STEAM program completely (Left click File then Exit)
6. Now create a shortcut on your desktop by right mouse click>>>new>>>shortcut, now a box will appear for you to enter some text.
7. Copy and paste the following into the box:
“C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe” -install e:
press next, name the shortcut press ok.
(please note the e: should be the drive letter of where your installation dvd is inserted, this is dependant on how your system is set up)
For example if your DVD drive is d, then the only amendment to the above code would be:
“C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe” -install d:
Edit: People were having problems with the copy and paste of “C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe” -install e: getting file not found errors when trying to create the shortcut, it was how the text on this page was formatted which was affecting the copy and paste, i have corrected it now sorry about that.
8. Double Click the shortcut you just created and the STEAM program will appear and indicate that the game is being installed from DVD 1, after everything is installed from DVD 1 you will be asked to insert DVD 2, do this then press ok to continue the install.
The installation process should take between 40 minutes and 60 minutes dependant on your system speed.
Edit: Reports say for some people the install can take over 2 hours, 15 gigabytes is a massive amount of data to install!!!
9. Once installation has completed steam will download a small patch for the game and will have a tick box to run the game, do this to make sure everything is installed ok and running.
10. Exit the game and run the STEAM program again, once the STEAM control panel appears click the My games tab, you should now see the Empire: Total War with the 100%-Ready next to it.
11. Now right mouse click on Empire: Total War a submenu will appear left click on Create desktop shortcut, this will create a nice little shortcut for the game on your desktop.
12. The next step is for people who wish to play the single player game without being connected to the internet, for online multi-player just double-click the Empire:Total War shortcut you just created.
13. Make sure you are not connected to the internet, double-click the Empire: Total War shortcut you just created a Connection Error box will appear from the STEAM program, you will see a choice box ‘Start in Offline Mode’ click this and now the game will start without you having to be connected to the internet, so you can enjoy the single player mode.
Final Word:
This is the exact process i had to go through to install the game (what a major pain in the ***) and hopefully this method with a few tweaks will work for you.
One year on and this game has turned from the worst game ever to the best game ever

This game is an all time epic fail. I brought it when it 1st came out and paid £40 for the privilege of getting it a day before release in the shops. The game suffered from memory leaks (causing crashes when in battle), constant crashing on the campaign map, massive lag on the map, graphical issues like dodgy pixels and the units looking like 2D bitmap images until you got close and only then were their full detail revealed… these were just the worst issues although there were more. When the game I had really been waiting for was released (ARMA 2) i got into that and didn’t bother with Empire anymore. The other day, I loaded up Empire as a mate said you could now play the campaign online but guess what?….more crashes lol. I understand the online campaign element has only just been released so I will give that a chance although I don’t have allot of hope because even though the single player game has improved allot since I last played it in around March….it still suffers from memory leaks and every now and again the text is displayed in a non converted format so I cannot read anything!!! I was a die hard fan of the Total War genre up until this embarrassment for a game came out. I definitely won’t be buying anymore TW games and this is the first game I have ever come across which still doesn’t work correctly over a year after it’s release. I can honestly call it the worst game ever without being to harsh lol.
Err….just to add that I now can’t play past year 1762 because the text is in what looks to be incorrectly converted strings/integers!
ive bought empire total war and downloaded it on stem.Then i try loading.I run my mouse over the screen with out clicking it and it goes white.The mouse insted shows blue circle for loading and at the top ove the screen it says not responding.ive tryed to redownload it and it still does it.Any help on thia
