Before proceeding to the error fixes, make sure that your computer meets Need for Speed Shift’s minimum system requirements. Fixes for NFS Shift errors and problems are posted below.
Need for Speed Shift’s Minimum system requirements
Minimum System Requirements
OS: Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1/Windows 7
Processor: Intel Core 2 DUO @ 1.6 GHz
Memory: 1 GB
Hard Drive: 6 GB Free
Video Memory: 512 MB (NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT/ATI Radeon X1800)
Sound Card: DirectX Compatible
DirectX: 9.0c
Keyboard & Mouse
Problem #1. Need for Speed Shift freezes randomly every x seconds.
Solution #1: (posted by dashadowpl) If you have Bitdefender installed, disable or uninstall it completely. It is known to cause Need for Speed Shift to freeze at random intervals.
Solution #2: Disable your internet firewall or add EA Nation and Need for Speed Shift to the list of exceptions. EA Nation can trigger false positives from your Firewall and can cause the game to freeze because EA Nation’s connection gets interrupted.
Solution #3 : (posted by kevlahnota ) Graphic Corruption usually occurs when using incompatible drivers or overheating issues. Update Your Video Card Drivers may fix the problem. Another common fixes are lower your resolution and turn off all eye candy in the game like motion blur, etc. and set all settings to low. If it runs fine then you may increase your setting gradually and find your optimal settings. Make sure to check also your controller/gamepad drivers if you have any, it might be conflicting on the game.
Problem #2. Need for Speed Shift Graphics is corrupted / Need for Speed Shift textures are corrupted / Artifacting
Solution #1: Make sure that you are not running the game with an overclocked video card
Solution #2: Make sure that your video card is not overheating.
Problem #3. Triangles,colored bars appear or random flashing (especially on tracks), most notably when Need for Speed Shift switches from menu to the actual game.

Problem #4. NFS Shift crashes on ATI cards
Solution #1 : Install the Catalyst 9.9 drivers for ATi

Problem #6. Game loads screen and gets to the driver safety page and this error message pops out : “shift.exe has encountered a problem”

Problem #7. Need for speed Shift Stuttering audio / cracking audio / no sound problem
Solution : Turn down/off Directsound Acceleration.
Problem #9. Black screen problem Need for speed shift startup
Solution #1 : Try running NFS Shift on windows 98 compatibility mode, this should make the game work. If you feel like you’ve lost some frames/sec with this method then try to update your graphics card drivers and if that doesnt boost the game performance, post your system specs on the comment box below along with w/e drivers or service packs your OS is using to run the game.

I am having a different problem. When I select Career mode there is a movie that play that cannot be skipped and I believe there is the test lap after that movie. However, for me, the movie keeps playing over and over again, it does not take me to the test lap.
Screen goes black but i can hear the menu music playing in the background. has this been addressed?
It happens to me, after the cinematics, starts the test drive or something like that, and the screen goes black, i hear music, the fx of the car, the rest of the sound, in fact, also y see the map, but the screen is black.

in my laptop with OS : win7 x64,
i ve problem of using my mouse and gamepad(joystick).
its like the problem is with usb ports.
and i saw that it s not only me.
there are dozen of people in ea forum with same problems.
I have the black screen problem in the demo, but randomly, sometimes after choosing the language, sometimes after the intro video, sometimes after finishing a race when I click on continue and sometimes quiting the game :S I can move the mouse, but I can’t open the task monitor to end the program and I have to reset my computer
I have the last drivers for my video card the last version of directx and PhysX
I dont have bitdefender installed and the game is already at the list of exceptions of my firewall.

I have two problems, first there’s no sound, at all, but the weird thing is that there used to be sound, but after a PC boot it just went off. So, how do I turn off the Directsound Acceleration for the game? there is no option for that on the menu.
And my second problem is with my gamepad, is just doesn’t work, and same as sound, it used to. It’s quite a generic one, and generic enough to work with almost any game. Any ideas?

however after selecting language…game crashes with windows encountering a problem with a black screen background. Is the fix provided for black screen the same to be used in my case?

guys,i have a problem here…..after a race , i get the screen to proceed back to main menu,i press continue and when the loading screen comes-(place where u see the circle circling at the bottom)that circling gets stuck and the game freezes
and also sometimes it gets stuck during the game

not sure but it feels like an EA-Nation + Firewall problem. can you try the solution for problem #1 in the blogpost above?

I’m having the same problem with Patrick. And I figured there’s a solution that have written above, which is :
a) remove graphicsconfig.xml from my NFS SHIFT directory
b) start the game and reconfigure the graphics
c) quit and restart the game again
But I can’t find the “graphicsconfig.xml”. Could anyone help me please. Thx
When the game starts it gets in to the car. then windows vista shows an error /crash with shift.exe.

When I select Career mode there is a movie playing that cannot be skipped. Even With an underclocked or Super Cooled Video Card it shows
Graphical Corruption into tracks, Confirmed into NFS forums
I think this is a Catalyst Drivers Problem, because I have same Problems with a japanese game released into September 2009, So this Graphical Corruption is ATI Fault
And is just Because NFS Shift and that Japanese Game have been Maked for NVIDIA Cards, and Ignored and Not tested for ATI Cards, Specialy HD4850+ Cards
We Need ATI Catalyst v 10.0 NOW……
I have this problem, everything runs fine for the testlap, then i get to choose a car, i buy the car, choose a track, finish that, and after that, while saving, my computer reboots, and then, when i start the game, the savefile is either corrupt, or is at the very beggining. i didn’t have this problem before, but i did have a different problem, it would give an error just as soon as the race would start, but i fixed that. i tried reinstalling it, tried using different versions even. can anyone help?

Ok! first i got this problem: (Problem #4. NFS Shift crashes on ATI cards) and i applied the solution sugested by you and it worked… After that the game got slower and turned the graphics in game options all to the lowest level and only got worst :S so i applied solution for problem: (Problem #6. Need for speed shift runs slow on Ati Cards)… and now i cant even start the first test lap cuz the intro keeps restarting and i cant exit it to go to the race… So help me please im losing my mind :S

For all amd cpu users install amd dual core optimizer this will fix black screens do not use compatibility mode because it dramaticaly lower fps i personaly own amd 4200+ i overclocked to 2,43 ghz now i have normal gameplay i guess about 50fps 1680×1050 2aa 8 af all high with radeon 4870 512 ddr5 and sometimes the game randomly crash to windows or it freezes up and i must restart the comp,i guess the problem is with suport of amd and ati
the car is not stable on the road….. i cant drive even with all the assists on!!!

There seems to be heaps of problems with the ATI Cards.
Here are my specs:
HP Pavillion dv5-1209ax
2.1 GHz AMD Athlon x2 Processor
4GB Ram
ATI HD 3650 (512 Dedicated Graphics)
Windows 7 Professional (x32 Version)
I can run the game on Windows 98/ME Compability Mode but the frame rate is horrible for parts of the game. The patch EA brought out is horrible. It has nothing to do with fixing the frame rate. Also upgraded to ATI Catalyst 9.9

I got the game today, already went back for a replacement. but the game seems to freeze in the same places e.g. while loading certain races. it’s extremly annoyin. what can i do?
When I put in the cd, the autorun wont come up all the time. When the autorun does come up, I click install and it freezes at the preparing to install screen for about 5 minutes and then it says that windows cannot read the cd.
during a race the screen goes black for 6 seconds or so then comes back. but when it comes back it put the game in a window. it seems that if you move the mouse during the race,like when your on a straight away, it helps. I use the xbox controler.
i had serious problem with my NFS shift…..im install correctly….and then im copy the content from crack file that is rld,rld.dll and shift.exe to the NFS shift directory file that is D:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Need for Speed SHIFT…….and then went im play the game…..it runs ok at first but…at the message of *if you wanna race then blablablabla…weir seatbelt blalalal* it get stuck and my computer restart ! i dont know what to do…..im playing again and then te same problem occurs…can somebody help me ?
I have a very different problem, after the intro movie (cannot be skipped), as soon as the first lap is LOADING, the game crashes.

The game crashed on me for several times; sometimes in the middle of the race, it’s kinda frustrating.
But I found a possible fix for those experiencing multiple game crashes.
Try setting your sample rate to “16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality)”.
Go to Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Sound -> Speakers / Headphones -> Advanced, under Default Format.
I previously set it to “24 bit, 96000 Hz (Studio Quality)” and it causes the game to crash frequently.

i’ve installed the latest nvidia driver 190.62 but still it doesn’t do any good?

i think i’ve found a way to make the game run on my pc..
not fixing but just tricking it…
this is what i do:
-right click your nfs shift icon
-select properties
-open the compatibility tab
-in the compatibility mode select “run this program in
compatibility mode for []”
-Select windows 98/windows ME
-click ok
-than try playing… (it works for me… ,it takes a little
while loading the startup screen but it works…)

Disable Automatic Defragmentation for Diskeeper users might prevent the game from crashing.

I am losing my mind with this game. I have been playing during several days and I have had next troubles:
1. Racing in spanfrancorchamps everything seems to be ok and when finish the race screen freezes or goes black and i have to restart.
2. Racing in London rivers after first lap black squares appears on the screen I can not see the road so I crash with another driver and the game restart my PC or freezes or goes black.
I have restarted new story two times and I have left both spafrancorchamps and London rivers races for other time. On these stories I have reached a 24 level pilot and I have unlocked 1,2,3,4 and NFS World Tour levels, well, I decide play any troublesome races and in the middle of the race or finishing them sreen goes black, restart the game and when I try to load my profile appears a window saying unable to load the profile, oh my holy·$·”"$%&/%&&%·$%$& &$&%$&%$!!!!!

found another work around to the crash at test lap problem - download a save game, any one will do - from google, and copy paste it to your user, load the game up with their user account, and it will run fine. its because the EA online thing dosnt load up, and crashes the game, so the user account usually makes it work.
one problem i got, is that after 5 or so minutes of playing my fps will drop to like 10.
Im running a laptop with a ATI Radeon 3850, 4gb of ram, intel core2duo 2.56ghz.

NFS Shift keeps freezing on loading screens (patch 1.1). it does it randomly. sometimes im able to do 2-5 races in row before it freezes (either loading into menu or loading into race), but sometimes it freezes right after i launch it and try to enter race and sometimes it happens many times in row when terminate the process and relaunch it and try to enter race.
fix ? .. waiting for those incompetent EA developers to release new patch.
Frankly guys, if EA doesn’t come up with a fix for ALL PC users, this game is going to the trash.
Graphics Corruption, Audio Crash, even Controller issues, this game has it all.
Bad release from EA.

I’ve a similar crash problem, I played the game for several hours after firs install using my Thrustmaster RGT Pro Clutch, and it was fine, if a little unresponsive compared to GTRe. I then thought I’d try my Logitech Dual Analog gamepad, it crashed as soon as I got into the cockpit, so I tried my wheel again, it now crashes within 60 seconds of the start every time. I’ve reinsalled, updated drivers, started new career, the lot. My nest attempt will be to system restore to before installing, and the keep my wheel plugged into the same USB port, as it may be that…

Well i was so excited about Need for speed Shift. I have got the demo now but after installing the when i click on play icon firstly it shows select the language and then before playing the movie of game the COMPUTER GETS RESTART. It happens again and again in every try.

This way, the game runs at 1024*768 res., but fullscreen.
Set “Shift.exe” to compatibility mode for “Windows98/ME”.
Run the game, go to Options -> Graphics. Set:
V-Sync -> ON
Texture Filtering -> Bilinear
Shadow -> Off [Thats sad, but it works]
Texture Detail -> High
Turn almost all to Off or Low
-> Don’t Change Resolution in Options menu.
Use the Mouse/Keyboard for car control.
Race through your career/quick race.
If works well without crashing, change the graphics options for much more details, but one setting at a time.
Try another career race/quick race to test.
Can change the controls to use gamepad/wheel afterwards.
For my system, sadly the shadow detail was the problem.
All settings are now to medium/high, except shadow.
Using also a custom gamepad.
Game hasn’t crashed since then.
-> IF you don’t need EA Nation Online, disable it.
[Options -> Online -> AutoLogin - OFF].
I disabled it because I don’t use it, and it annoys me every time the game starts.
Also allow your Firewall, full acess to Shift.exe.
[Control Panel -> Windows Firewall]
Reached Tier2 and all cars are playable through quick race without crashes.

Racing in Spafrancorchamps and London River appears black squares, fortunately, I could continue playing but it happends when I was playing the second race attack for level 3. My pilot level was 21. Everything seems to be ok, I finished this race, first place, all curves dominated, all points won and happens again, the screem goes black during a shortly time and my pc restarted. I tried to load my profile and the same message: Unable to load this profile, what a f……I am sorry but I lost hours playing again and nobody can solve this trouble. I have tried with all tips I have read here and others forums and I can not fix it, I feel very angry.
I haven’t even played the game yet, and all I get is a black screen when i click on shift.exe to start the game.

I’ve core2duo 2.00GHz, and 965RY motherboard inbuilt 384MB graphic memory.. when i start nfs shift it showing me choose language list,i select english and press enter, pc get restarted. Plz help me out. Thanks in advance.
Guys, please try the solutions given above first. Check your system requirements if they meet the game. Update your graphic drivers, reset your graphics settings to default, and launch the game with lowest settings. If that doesn’t work, just too bad.
I broke my NFS SHI*T DVD in three parts, and is in the bin. Lame game for its tuning part. Play GRID [nfs shift somewhat resembles grid??], wait for DiRT2.
I removed it because I get eyes pain when trying to race from cockpit view, it shakes too much, low track visibility, map view is too transparent, and controls are somewhat lagging everywhere.
Get over it.

As I used the default graphic settings, the game isn´t running very fluent. I do have enough frames, but the speed the game is running at, is randomly increasing or decreasing.

I am using it on an Acer Aspire 8930 Notebook with a 9700M GT. The demo version was running fine, without any problem and high graphical setings.

Hi for all those who are working with a notebook and therefore have a mobile-graphics chipset, please read the system-requirements. There is something written like: “The game supports ATI Radeon X1800 and nVidia Geforce 9700 GT or higher. The game might can run with the Notebook-Version of those chips, but they are not supported.”
They may build a patch in the upcoming weeks or month to fix that, but if the market of shift-playing notenook-users does not grow, they will not do it I think.

When i start the game, i see the intero video.
After this the games asks to enter, but my enter key doesn’t work anymore.
So i get stuck on this view.
I had the same problem with my labtop with nfs underground.
But then it was possible to use the mouse.
I have vista as OS.

hey guys , i mentioned in my first post that the Intel driver needed to be updated and i did it , but still the game crashes after the intro video and been reading a lot about it many pple having this problem and the word is out that this game sucks for it has lots of errors , i dont know .
i hope they patch thi error soon cuz im so pationate about playin the game …….
In order to fix the career intro movie loop, simply go to the movies folder(Electronic Arts/Need For Speed: SHIFT/Movies) and rename the movie Career_Intro.bik to Career_Intro_1.bik and it should smoothly direct you to the test lap, straight past the movie. Good Luck and Happy Racing.

Game play is notchy and slow when I use Logitech dual action game pad. Looks like graphics being overloaded. If i unplug gamepad and just use keyboard, game works fine at max resolution.
Also if I reduce resolution to half gamepad starts to work ok.
Have got the latest drivers and tried reinstalling the game.
Is there a problem with using Logitech dual action gamepad or is it just me?

I can confirm that Shift will start up until the test lap in Win 7 Rc 1 Build 7100 but upon load the tesp lap Game will Lock up I needed to Ctrl alt del out and it has the game crashed error.
Some of the EA Staff know about these issues they simply will not do anything about it at this stage guys maybe if management let them work on shift some more it might happen in next patch until then there is nothing that can see that can fix these issues for good until *Decompiling takes place*
Just bought the game. Was looking forwared to playing it. But, Like so many others I discovered that while loading the test lap/map? it crashes. No explanation , Nothing.
Now I’m running vista 64bit and have encountered this kind of problem before and mostly it boils down to the game or somepart of it not liking working with/on 64bit systems(guestimation).
Some people have reported that it’s the max ram which kills the program.
So looks like this is the 5th game I’ve bought this year that hates 64bit( So it seems).
I’m fairly sure it’s not my hardware at fault, apart from the max mem thing.
If I’m wrong about the 64bit thing then let me know.

My Shift crashed at the ’safety warning’ screen. I contacted EA support. 8 days later, I got this, I quote -
“I understand your problem and I would like to inform you that there are many problem for windows vista 64 bit with some of the EA Games. I request you to please try the game running in vista 32 bit in its compatibility mode. Then you may be able to run the game better.”
That’s it, it would appear that I have the wrong operating system !!! How long has 64bit computing been around?

Solution found! i have found out why my keyboard did not work at all for the game and this may help others too. If you have a program that allows you to block block certain registry actions such as comodo security suite and you have blocked an action the game tries to do with hook.dll, it would describe this action as possibly being like a keylogger(which it is not). i originally blocked this action but when i set it to allow and now my keyboard works just fine.

i got a loading problem i think. A few hours ago, while scrolling in my car list, the game wasn’t loading my toyota corolla :s weirdly, it did load other cars. So i picked my toyota corolla for a quick race to see what happend. And the game crashed, i had to ctrl-alt-delete and shut it down. Afther a while i continiued gaming and when i started up my game and had to select my profile. It says loading complete but then.. it says loading prifile elements and it won’t go further :s any help plz, i just bought a Zonda R and i don’t wonna lose my account :s

The intro videos repeat several times, and everything runs smoothly until I get to test drive then its all choppy. I canged the graphics to low, and vsync I turned off. I don’t know what else to try.
If I need to upgrade a part what would need to be upgraded? Thanks in advance.

I am installing NFS Shift there is a error on my vista.
It shows error with voiceover.fsb please check if you are able to open this file, and when i check this file it shows the size of 0 kb. and the game doesnot install i left it overnite incase if it installs.please help me

-3gb Ram
-nvidia geforce 8400 gs 512MB vga (version 60.86.4A.00.13)
Everything is working fine till the carrer bigins:S
when they mark to me to GO 2 secondes later the game crashes with the following error:
This application has failed to start because MSVCR100.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.
I think it’s something related to the directX because when i try to access the dxdiag.exe the same error occured.
So please can anyone help with that!! Cz i want to try this game!!!

The game works perfect for me however it opens and runs in a window and the Maximize button in that window is not active (I have Windows VISTA). Thanks in advance

This is whats wrong with my game, the problem is that i click on Shift.exe and the game starts and shows the the loading part it tries to load then goes about 1/5 of the bar nad then goes back to 1/6 and then automatically exits the game and goes back to my desktop. I am using a laptop and the requirements are met, but im not sure about my video card, due to the reason that i do not know where to check it

i am playing nfs shift on PC. i have 1 gb ram xpsp3 n nvidia 9500gt card game was running perfect untill i reached nfs world tour now game slows down 2 much its running but v slow like 10fps what could b the reason?

I am having a different problem. When I select Career mode there is a movie that play that cannot be skipped and I believe there is the test lap after that movie. However, for me, the movie keeps playing over and over again, it does not take me to the test lap.

I am having random game freezes in my Win7 OS. Win XP is even worse. When in XP I get BSOD’s. I get into about 2 sometimes 3 races and the game will freeze. my GPU,CPU are not Over Heating and both stay in their rated operating temps.
All drivers are up to date.
I have a NVIDIA GeForce 7950GT, CORE2 6600 2.4, on windows seven 64-bits, I also have the latest drives.

i have solved the problem. took out my ati dx 9 card and replaced it with a nvidea dx 10 card.
Hi, when i started the game its only appear first screen (need for speed shift ) after that loading only black screen appear and that game do not responding no more, i can’t close it, i use task manager to close it :S, i re-installed 10 times, still the same problem any idea!!

just lower your video card config, and usually, IT IS NOT THE IN GAME CONFIG BUT THE CATALYST/CONTROL PANEL CONFIG of your graphics card, try ENABLING some graphics features(anti-aliasing for example) or better to enable the “let the app decide” option on your vid cards.
@persons w/ black screen problem:
first, be sure that your pc meet the minimum requirements, especially the vid card requirement. vid card requirement does not only point to the total dedicated ram memory it has, but also its features, like its chip clock speed, memory clock speed, pixel shader version(most important to hi-end games, w/0 the right required version, YOUR PC WILL NOT RENDER 3D GRAPHICS), and so on. the most probable cause of a black screen is that your vid card does not have the required pixel shader for the game(for NFS shift, it must be pixel shader 3.0).
if there’s something wrong to what i said id gladly be corrected so please say so.

it has the game requirements fulfilled to run nfs shift

My software engineer made my ‘C’ drive 25 GB & the rest of the drives are 100 GB or above
can this be the problem coz i dont know if the game needs more space on the C drive…it has 7-8 GB left after installing the game

If you are getting an error (black screen) Go to your documents and setting and open the NFS SHIFT folder, open graphicsconfig file using notepad, change your screen settings and refresh rate to what you are using on your video card. remember to make a backup of the original file first.
that’s all I had to do and worked perfect.

I have a problem that some levels cannot be played.
like the levels from the second car class with your own car, the tracks with other cars I can play.
Everytime I start a level the loading screen appears(normal),
but it just keeps loading.
