List of Fixes For DragonAge Origins (PC) Errors

Update : Since there are so many ways for this game Dragon Age crash. so before looking into the solutions below, try this solution posted by Odess81
Just disable full screen play. It should boot no problem. After you’re in the game, you can manually reconfig the full screen mode

Problem #1 : Dragon Age crashing to desktop on random intervals
Solution : If you are an ATI user (specially those who use Catalyst 9.9 drivers), downgrade your video card driver to Catalyst 9.7. There are issues with running Dragon Age on ATI Catalyst 9.9 and should be fixed with the next Catalyst update
credits: destroy 733

Problem #2: Dragon Age error message “Error: Could not connect to EA Core”
Solution: Open up the EA Download Manager and enter your serial number for the game there to activate it. I did that and it works fine now.
credits: Nanobent
Solution: Your firewall or anti-virus may be preventing EADM/EA Downloader from connecting to it’s server. Disable your firewall and anti-virus then try again
Solution: Reinstall EADM/EA Downloader

Problem #3 Cannot register to Dragon Age Social site problem (Cannot download Dragon Age DLC, toolset)
Solution : Known issue with no available workaround yet. So far, we know that this is an issue with EA and not Bioware… greedy bastards at EA should burn in hell.

Problem #4 Dragon Age error message “we could not activate Dragon Age on this computer” appears when trying to activate the game.
Solution : Click on the “Enter product key” button and type in your product key again. This is because EA has it’s own thing going with the activation process of Dragon Age and inputting the key on Steam/Direct2Drive is just for the sake of adding the game to your profile.

Problem #5 Dragon Age “Unauthorized” message/label on downloaded content (Unable to play content error)
Solution you need to be logged in to the profile that purchased the DLCs in order to play them

Problem #6 Dragon Age randomly freezes in game
Solution See solutions for Problem #1

Problem #7 Downloading Dragon Age DLC/Content files and it the download process froze (marked by exclamation point beside the DLC). How can i restart it?
Solution

1.Select the content on the Download Progress tab and click Download.
2.If there is no Download button available, follow these steps:
a.Re-start the game. From the Game Launcher, click on the Configure button.
b.In the Configure tool, click on Repair and then Clear Download Cache.

Problem #8 Dragon Age crashes during/after conversations
Solution No known workaround

Problem #9 EADM does not work on Windows 7
Solution No known work arounds yet as of this posting. here’s what EA said about this issue

Prior to the release of Windows 7, the current EA Download Manager application (version 5.1.0.4) had been developed, tested, and released for Windows XP and Windows Vista (32 bit). Upon further testing, we discovered that the current version of the EA Download Manager may not be fully compatible with Windows 7. As a result, a fully compliant version of the EA Download Manager is in active development.

While we apologize for any inconvenience this delay might cause, please know that we vest an enormous effort in ensuring broad compatibility across multiple games and platforms. Our rigorous QA and development process helps ensure the outstanding gaming experience you’ve come to expect, and the production process for the EADM is no exception.

“The installation of Dragon Age: Origins has failled.

      A data error occurred”

It seems at 15.4% through extracting campaign_movie3.rar to finalbattle.blk there is some sort of an error. I downloaded the game via Comrade, from D2D about 2 hours ago… After having preloaded, and removed the file. This happens on any drive I have used.

Dragon Age froze just after killing the giant rats in the pantry, with the sound looping. I had to hard-reset.

Installed Dragon Age: Origins without any problems. I have promo codes installed and that did not present any problems either. I create my character, select stats, talents and difficulty. When I press play the icon at the bottom turns once and then stops. It says loading at the bottom but it really freezes. I have rebooted and did everything that I can think of but the problem remains.

      Update:

Rar Details: A Data error occured.

Um, it shouldn’t be a problem with my hardware. What do I do about this?

Game installed and runs fine, for about 10 minutes tops then I crash to desktop.

I’m running Windows 7 x64 and it would appear that the problem is actually on ATI’s end. I would assume that most people with ATI cards and Windows 7 x64 are having the same problem.

Dragons Age freezes/crashes during intro sequence/character creation page. I have a Radeon HD 4870 x2 video card, core 2 quad 2.4 ghz, 8 gb ram on win 7 64 bit. I originally had catalyst 9.10 driver installed, but rolled back to version 9.7 as recommended, but this has made no difference to me. I would love if someone could please help me! Should I have gotten an NVidia card instead, as this is not the first time I have had a potentially graphics-related problem since I got my Radeon?

      Thanks in advance,

      Mark

      My Specs:

Intel C2D E7300, XFX 9800 GT, Asus P5QL-Pro, 4 GB DDR2 RAM, Windows XP SP3. Everything updated to latest drivers.

Apart from the one random crash to the desktop I got after playing for about 4 hours, I got a weird glitch after the Joining ritual. Graphics was all messed up. Polygons were stretched so far out they covered the entire screen. Textures were missing as well. I did a quick save and went into the main menu, reloaded my game and it was fine. No overheating issues since I was playing at night and an electric fan is directly feeding my PC cool air coming in from my window. Played at night so the weather was pretty cold.

After I downloaded and installed Dragon Age on PC it doesn’t work. I was able to go to the menu where you can change video card settings etc but when I hit play it says “There is a problem with your game’s setup. Please reinstall your game” I reinstalled 2 times updated my video card it still doesn’t work. I’m running on Windows 7 64bit.

AWC.dll error – The game has failed due to a misconfiguration. Please install your game again and try again.

    30. G — November 4, 2009 @ 9:25 pm

During the Cinematics, there isn’t really any sound. There’s talking from the main characters but not from anyone else. There’s also no ambient noise coming from the surrounding parties or people. For example; a charging army makes no noise. Is that intentional?

    31. Trevor — November 4, 2009 @ 10:32 pm

I’m running into the awc.dll error that Aleksei mentioned above. Downloaded the game from Impulse, no errors or anything but when I try to start the window pops up saying “The game has failed due to a misconfiguraiton. Please reinstall and try again”. I’ve re-downloaded/re-installed three times now and no changes.

After leaving the origin story, any time I walk across the bridge to the gray warden camp the game crashes to desktop, at exactly the same place every time. A windows error message saying “dragon age has stopped working” pops up. Event viewer reports a memory violation.

I was able to get past this by saving just before the step that crashes me, and loading then moving forward instantly. However When I left the camp into the woods, I crashed again. This looks to be something happening at these specific spots, as I can spend hours in the origin areas with no issues.

Also of possible note, the game seems to max my CPU out at 100% no matter what it’s doing, even in menus.

crashes during installation with “data error” message. This is my second copy of the game, I got it to install on the second try, was pumped, and then couldn’t get the game to load, kept getting the black screen crash. So, I uninstalled, and now it crashes in the first few seconds of installation. I know I’ve seen a lot of other messages from people who are getting the “data error” message, so it must be a fairly common compatibility problem.

I can’t even install the game! When trying to put it into ANY installation path Vista gives me the message directly below the scroll box

The install folder specified is in or is a folder reserved for special files.

What in the world does that mean? I’ve never had this problem before when installing any games. I’ve tried creating a new folder, placing in an old one, renaming an old one, replacing this games folder with another game’s. No idea what I’m doing wrong!

Dragon Age (Retail) crashes while launching PC Standard edition. I installed yesterday and played flawlessly. No issues launching or in-game. Today I can’t launch the game. It crashes right at launch.

I had this issue with the Character Creator too when I first downloaded it. It worked fine first few days and then it started crashing when I tried to launch. Worked fine after a reinstall. But I’d rather not reinstall the game though.

“After leaving the origin story, any time I walk across the bridge to the gray warden camp the game crashes to desktop, at exactly the same place every time. A windows error message saying “dragon age has stopped working” pops up. Event viewer reports a memory violation.

I was able to get past this by saving just before the step that crashes me, and loading then moving forward instantly. However When I left the camp into the woods, I crashed again. This looks to be something happening at these specific spots, as I can spend hours in the origin areas with no issues.”

      Exact same issue with me.

Just passed through it without a crash. (After 5 or 6 reliable crashed at that exact spot).

I turned off autosave and slowly marched through it, saving every second to try to get past it like you did.

And.. I just walked through.. no problem. Could be a problem with autosave? Though I’m not sure if it autosaves right there.

A fix that worked for me:

      First – specs
      AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.1GHz
      4GB RAM
      Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 1GB
      MSI 790GX HDMI ATX
      Windows 7 x64 Professional

I was getting a lot of crashing due to my video card at first so I rolled the drivers back to Catalyst 9.7.
I was still crashing so I ran it in a window and watched my resource manager, CPU was maxing out at 100% like many others have stated. I went to the task manager and removed one of the cores from the affinity menu. CPU dropped to around 53% but the game is stable now (at least in the human origin story, haven’t tested others)

I think we still need to wait for a patch but this workaround might work for some other people on 64 bit dual core systems that are experiencing crashing. 53-60% CPU usage is still pretty high and I wouldn’t recommend playing it for extended periods of time, but I got about 2 hours in(past origin story and over the notorious bridge of crashing).

      Best of luck!

    60. Sean — November 6, 2009 @ 1:19 am

I am not sure whether this is related to the EADM issue not working on Win7.

I am running Windows 7 RC 64bit, and I cannot download any of the DLC. It does not even show up in the in-game menu, no matter what I do.

This is because the “Dragon Age: Origins Updater Service” is unable to start, even when I try it manually through services.msc. Manually starting it causes it to instantly report the following error: “Windows could not start the Dragon Age: Origins Updater service on Local Computer.

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.”

Manually uninstallting and reinstalling the service using the “installutil.exe” is possible, but it does not resolve the problem. The service simply cannot start, and therefor the in-game DLC downloader cannot detect the available DLC.

Graphical tearing/artifacts game runs perfectly fine otherwise. Nothing is overheating according to two different temp monitors. I can play for however long I want but some textures have square holes (character models) while floor/wall/door textures are stretched or missing. No settings affect this, forced vysnc or tripple buffer have no effect other than “smoothing out” the missing pieces.

    72. Akira — November 6, 2009 @ 9:37 pm

For those who are having “data error” during installation, just extract the files .rar at “date” folder to some directory on your hard disk with other files from the “data”.

Then just run the daorigins.exe from the folder “bin_ship” that have been created.

I haven’t seen any solutions to the Data Error problem that’s been running around, where you try to install the game and you get an error that a file is corrupt; the installation then deletes itself.

This appears to be a problem with the CRC error checking algorithm, NOT the files. I fixed it this way:

      1) Take the game CD, and make two ISO images on your computer. I used Nero.

      2) Mount the ISO images at the same time in virtual drives. I used DaemonTools.

      3) Manually unrar the contents of the first disc into a folder for the game. Use winrar, which does NOT delete on a corrupt file, but instead keeps going.

      4) Manually unrar the second, with orders NOT to replace existing files.

      5) Manually copy over the remaining files from the main directory on the CD, that weren’t in any rar file.

      6) At this point the game worked for me. I’m not aware of any problems down the road, but I’ve barely started playing. Remember, you need the disc in the drive to play!

I have played the game for a while when it froze and said
“Dragon age: origins has stopped working”. It crashed when i was leaving Flenneths hut with Morrigan. It said, “Area transition: World map” then it asked me about “Gather your party and venture forth?” I pressed yes and thats when it crashed. Now i tried that 10 times over and every time it crashed. So i played to the same location with another character and the same exact problem!
I have updated the game to 1.02a(or something) and it did’t fix it.
      Windows vista 32
Nvidia card(so it’s not the ATI problem)
Got 3.2gig ram so it can’t really be an issue there!

      Please help me!

I have what i think is the same problem as Mark (an early post ) i get part way through the character creation screen when my system starts buzzing rather violently (I traced it to the PSU which bewildered me) Anyway, it buzzes, skips a bit then i get a blue screen- doesnt last long but i think its a memory leak of some kind. Then the system crashes and doesnt stop buzzing till XP boots up again.

      Im running
      XP (SP.3)
      8800GT card (fully updated)
      Q6600 Quad CPU 2.4
2Gb Overclocked Team Elite Ram (up’ed clock timings)

I ran it a few times, once with a system monitor on and noted the first two CPU cores go off the charts before the fatal crash.

      -The buzzing is most worrying.

Thank you Greatly for any help you can provide : )

I’m having the same problem as Zamou. During the character creation screen, the whole screen is tinted in red. In the game, the portions of the screen turn red, green, and blue. The portions of the screen that are blue are not transparent. I can’t play the game because of this.

When I try to install the PC version of DAO on a 2nd computer (my laptop) from the install disk it won’t accept the cd-key. It says it’s invalid. It used it fine on my desktop computer. Will this game only allow it to be installed 1x???

    102. mikeg — November 9, 2009 @ 3:39 am

The game keeps crashing before crossing the bridge to go to the signal tower with Alistair after the Joining. I have gotten to the big battle cutscene once. It usually won’t even play that scene before it crashes. After this crash happens, any saves in Ostagar are borked and cause the same game crash. I can reload back to Morrigan’s mom, but never any saves in Ostagar.

Why would every Ostagar save I have get corrupted just because the cutscene keeps failing after the joining? This is just insane. It has happened after every new install I performed. Just this one pat of the game. All other cutscenes have been fine.

I can load the saves with Morrigan, redo her cutscene with mommy, go back to Ostagar, finish my business there, and then go to Duncan and do the Joining…and the game ALWAYS crashes before I get to the bridge en route to the tower with Alistair.

Hi, I bought the game via steam and dl’ed/installed.

During the install there were no complications. Now whenever i startup the game, a c++ progress window pops up and im told that steam needs to be closed for installer to finish, my option are: cancel, try again or ignore.

If i press cancel the game will start and i can play. I’ve done so for 2 days without any problems. Now suddenly i can’t even play for 10 mins without a gamecrash. I’ve experienced different types of those. Game crash at startup (intro movie just once) mostly its ingame not doing anything particular the screen freezes, some GFX pixel errors shows of screen and the game continues to run in the background cuz i can hear they keeps fighting and dying or talking, whatever i was doing, but the screen is still frozen. The only way i can get out of this is by manually rebootin, nothing else works (not happy).

I tried installing newest GFX drivers and also the ones that came with my gfx cards but nothing works. And i really don’t want to delete game and reinstall by dl’ing the 15gbs AGAIN. The odd thing is that it ran flawless the first 48h.

For me it take almost a day to make it work. Even that way it freezes once.
After several hours I realize that the game crash if I configure the Graphic Detail other than LOW.
I thought it was Windows 7, then I install in WinXP and the same. With Graphic Details set to other than LOW it freezes in the first screen change after about 30 sec.

At work so can’t go into a lot of detail.

Win7, Evga geforce gtx275, intel i5 cpu, 4gb ram, ASUS Maximus formula III(packaged with a soundcard, soundblaster i think)

In cutscenes the audio lags behind the video. Voices stay in time with the cutscenes, but clashing swords and other sounds of war (think after-tower cutscene) are not heard immediately. The gap between the video and the sound seems to worsen the longer the cutscene goes on.
Note: Setting graphics settings as low as they go does not help

    113. Shreav — November 10, 2009 @ 9:14 am

I have found a minor solution to help with the ‘crash on loading’ issue. When you start up the game, go into settings/options and lower all your video settings to a minimum, and disable vertical sync and effects.

From experience, this allows the game to load whatever save I want and once in the game, I just pop up all my video settings again.

Cannot install from DVD disk onto W7 (64bit). Installer fails while trying to extract files. Only way to install is to copy data files to hard drive, unpack and manually copy into /program files(x86) folder. Game will play but unable to install any patches as patch installer cannot find original game files.

Anyone else have the game through Steam and seem to get a crash any time Steam wants to run a “News” update? I can’t tell you how many of my DAO crashes were followed by seeing a box in the taskbar for some Steam “news” advertising game deals or new releases.

If I had just known that Steam would not only force me to run its program constantly in order to access DAO, but crash the game with regularity, I’d have bought it on disc or through another download site and spared myself the frustration.

The first day or two playing, everything was fine. Then, the game started crashing, so I updated all my drivers. Now, my sound isnt working. I had to rollback my driver from the microsoft to an Asus driver, which is my motherboard manufacturer. So my sound works, though my game crashes several different ways, hardfreeze, error message, and blue screen.

      Hi everyone,

      Problem:
Installation always crashes, at random points. The screen freezes, and after while goes into blue screen of death:
      KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR
      stop: 0×00000077 (0xc000000e,0xc000000e,0xc00000001,0×0087A000)

      Specs:
      OS: Windows XP pro SP3
      CPU: Intel core 2 duo E6750 2.66ghz
      RAM: 2GB
      Video: GeForce 8800GT 512MB
24 GB HD space available (maxtor 80 gb, a little old, two partitions)
      ESET NOD32
      Spybot-sd
      No firewall (windows firewall disabled)
      Daemon tools lite 4.35.5.0068
      Power iso 4.6

      What I’ve tried:
      -at least 50 installation trials…
-versions: Skidrow, skidrow repack, Warg, a 4.9 repack
      -run setup with administrator rights
-set the install process’ affinity to only one core
-boot the computer without the antivirus/antispyware/any other process that would not be required/disabled the local connection/
-Changed the virtual memory space allowed
      -I desintalled Sandboxie software
-I prayed (one time the installation went up to 65/70%)

The last version I have is the 12gb Dragon.Age.Origins.MULTI5-WARG. I would prefer a french version but I would go even with a chinese one!

      Plz some help me :)

My problem is the same as #13 #39 #76 #124 #126. and i havent seen a solution to it.

I’ve found a SOLUTION to the “Problem #8″ – Dragon Age crashes during/after conversations.

It’s simple: Just turn the sound hardware acceleration to zero. Go Control Panel -> Sound Settings -> Advanced, slide the control all the way to your left.

It works great for me since the game was crashing like hell and now it runs as smooth as vanilla ice cream…

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

Nah… After a smooth gameplay the game is crashing after the grey warden joining ritual dialogue. Just as Duncan says we’ve a meeting with the king and we answer. I’ve tried to play again a million times but still it crashes at the same point. Trying to update game now…

I’m having a similar problem to others on this post—install seemed to work fine (and re-install), and I can configure, but, once I go in to New Game, the spin-y, tribal tattoo-looking thing comes up, “Loading…” flashes a few times, and then BAM…the whole thing crashes. I get the generic “DAO has encountered a problem and needs to close” message, but the error signature is as follows:
      AppName: daorigins.exe AppVer: 1.1.9363.0 ModName: daorigins.exe
      ModVer: 1.1.9363.0 Offset: 0007cd37

Graphics card? 3-D problem? REALLY want to play this game. Arg.

Running Windows XP SP3, DAO 1.01, 2.2 GHz Dual Core, 4GB Mem, GeForce 8600M card. Helps?

    161. Zamav — November 17, 2009 @ 4:14 am

      Here’s a post I made on official forums;

      ——————————
I made a post before about ATI Catalyst 9.10 fixing my problem, but it didn’t last long and I’ve been trying to isolate the issue ever since.

Here’s my problem. Game just freezes after random amount of time. Requires a hard reboot everytime. So far it has only happened while walking or while in combat. Haven’t got anything while in dialog, loading or checking codex/journal/character sheet.

At first I thought it was ATI drivers because EA support already had a solution for 9.9 users. I switched back to 9.7 as suggested but it didn’t made any difference, then I upgraded to 9.10, which allowed me to play without any problems for a fair amount of time. It didn’t stopped freezing though, as it started 2 days after.

So, here’s what I’ve tried so far:

      Rolled back to old drivers
      Installed latest drivers
Tried every single graphic option combination
      Underclocked both GPU and CPU
      Tried changing Affinity
Closed every single program on the background
      Disabled Anti-Virus and Firewall
      Uninstalled all unnecessary applications
      Defragged the Hard Disk Drive
Unplugged all USB hardware including Keyboard and Mouse (switched back to PS/2)
      Decreased the Sound Acceleration
      Disabled Sound
Uninstalled Sound Card and tried onboard sound
Checked overheating and both CPU and GPU is solid

As you can see I tried lots of things. Until 2 days ago, when I though I needed a format to completely isolate the issue and started uninstalling random things for the sake of trying it, I uninstalled my codecs. I wasn’t expecting anything because I was using filters and I had absolutely 0 problems with them in the past, including with some games that had well known codec problems. Since then, I’ve been playing the game pretty much crash/freeze free for the last 2 days. I already have VLC so I don’t really need WMP (I like it better though but thats my opinion).

If anyone else is having same issues with me, I suggest uninstalling all video and sound codecs for a try.
      ——————————

      and follow up;

      ——————————
Apperantly that wasn’t the cause either as it started freezing after 3 days and now I can’t even play for 20 minutes without freezing.

Reinstalling graphics driver somehow gives me some time before freezing again completely. I’ve formatted my HDD and I only have bare minimums installed and game still gives me the same issues.

      Its really frustrating.
      ——————————

Only thing I didn’t mentioned was, I bought the game from Steam, so exe is modified so it can only be launched via Steam. But that couldn’t be the cause as there are lots of other people that aren’t having any issues at all. I’m at a loss here really.

Dragon age crashes at random intervals to the desktop, however I’m now at a scene were it crashes at the same point consistantly and am basically at a full stop with the game.

Windows 32 bit Vista SP2, Phenom 3.0Ghz chip, 4 Gigs Ram, GForce 8800 GTS 512 vid, all drivers updated, game fully patched.

    166. Corry — November 18, 2009 @ 2:09 am

Dragon Age seemed to install fine. I get the menu where I am asked to Config, Visit Website, see Support sites, (yada yada) and Play. Selecting every other option works correctly, but pressing play begins a loading process that resembles full screen loading for any game and then I get a Blue Screen of Death that forces my PC to restart.

I am running a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit with an nVidia GTS 250 video card. All my drivers are up to date.

      Youhou!! It’s aliiiiive :D

Hum. Well, this follow post #146.

(excuse my english, I am not a native speaker)

My problem was that the installation crashes each time, but randomly. I tried then to extract myself each folder, and if crash, each of its file. Like the install, some extraction crashed. After many trial, I was able to extract all the files. At that point, I was able to run the game, but it crashed each time I launched a new game.

Then, I tried one more installation and it worked. The game is installed and I was able to run a new game.

The problem was at the level of extraction. I dont know where this problem is from, because I never had that before.

If someone has the same problem, just try many (many) times, it may work.

      gl all

Game seems to crash quite frequently. At first, it was during the first scene, it would cause the computer to restart. After I freed up hard disk space, ran RegCure, defraged, and optimized my hard disk, I tried again. This time, it played until my character went into the woods to start his joining ritual. It proceeded to crash when he walked to a specific point near then entrance of the forast. I rolled my ATI driver back to 9.7 from 9.11 and it did it again. Then I re-installed the game and this time it played past that point, but later in the forest it froze again with the sound looping. This is getting frustrating.

I found a workaround that worked for me on the physx issue (problem 11). I’m running an ATI card so downloading an Nvidia driver was a no-no for me. Instead I downloaded the .dll file ‘physxcudart_20.dll’ and placed it in the dragon age bin_ship folder. This did the trick. I had to do it for the toolset as well.

Running the Steam copy of DAO found that going to C:\Users\YourUserName\Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age\Settings and deleting the DragonAge.ini file before running the game stops the crash from occuring. However this will wipe all of your settings and is only a temporary solution.

I haven’t got any problems with the game until after i defeated the broodmother and traveled to anvil of the void. The area just wont load, it gets stuck on the loading screen. I let it run for 30 min and tried it with or without the dwarf in my party.
I dont think the problem is my pc as the rest of the game runs smoothly, doesnt crash and no insane loading times i hear people complain about.

Is there a know problem with that area or any know fixes?

is there really isnt a solution to dragon age crashing and freezing? i tried almost everything, and still it doesnt work. i downgraded my drivers, turned of gpu accelaration, turned of windows firewall and nothing relly works. i play the game for 2 minutes and it freezes, most of the time it freezes during conversations or during actual gameplay like walking or fighting. i use windows 7 32-bit, 9800 gf gtx, 3 gig ram. the similiar thing was also with mass effect, but here like you cant find a solution.

When I load the game it loads fine, but when I get to the game play the 3D models all turn black and I can’t see anything. The game still plays fine, I just can’t see any of the rendered graphics. all menus work fine. And this just happened today, i have been playing the game fine until now.

Windows 7 RC build 7100 crashes and reboots frequently while playing dragon age.

    193. Xelous — November 27, 2009 @ 6:01 pm

At death, selecting to resume from last save can result in the loading page freezing mysterioiusly.

Alt+Tabbign at this point shows up a Visual C++ Runtime LIbrary error stating, error in call to pure virtual function R6230.

Looking this up it states that this is a programming bug whereby the game has been told to call the base constructor of a class (which it has inherited from in the class tree) but for which no overridden version of the constructor with the provided parameters exists.

This results in the system crashing: My game is patched to v1.01b with the correct drivers & C++ Runtime LIbrary as specified.

It is an Intel Core 2 Quad E8600 processor, with dual Nvidia GEForce 8800 GT Cards, 4 GB of RAM.

This is the latest in a line of bugs I have with Dragon Age, I’m wondering if it received any testing at all to be frank.

My copy crashed to black screen no matter what i tried until I turned off the run in full screen option in the game options. I went from not being able to make it through character creation to playing for 3 or so hours without a crash. It kinda sucks to have to play in windowed mode but at least i can play it

DAO often crashes to desktop at random intervals. All latest drivers and updates for all hardware and software have been installed with no change. This is not the Steam version.

First, I like to say for those who have ATI cards and run Windows Vista/07 will have more problems than if running an Nvidia card. I had so many problems on an ATI card on Vista until I decided to go with Nvidia, granted the card runs nice and fine on Vista so long I do not over clock it. But the ATI BAH! Even in stock mode the card gave me more random crashes than I can count. You can if you have an ATI card check out this link and glance at the older posts, you may find something that may help:
      http://www.driverheaven.net/vista-radeon-display-drivers/133188-vista-7-3-display-driver-atikmdag-stopped-responding-error-56.html

I solved my crash problem with the ATI crashes by switching over to Nvidia card.
Now for those that are experiencing problems with Nvidia cards I done some testing and found out with the game Dragon Age I had to lower the graphics to the Performance level through the Nvidia control panel. Ever since that the game didn’t crash for hours. Before this manipulation it crashed on me sometimes after a movie and sometimes randomly while entering the journal or entering a room etc…
Now I can finally play this dam game without worry about saving the my progress every dam step.

I don’t know if this is the right place to post this or not. I just found a solution to my crashing problems. If your game is crashing constantly, try turning off “Frame Buffer Effects”. It may work for some of you.

Yikes. After reading these comments I’m scared to keep playing. My system is finicky enough as is…

Anyway, I downloaded the game from D2D.com a few days ago. Managed to get it installed just fine. Playing on the lowest settings possible gets rid of the odd starburst character model graphic problem for me, but any time I exit the game after playing for a while I get a blue screen flash and my computer reboots.

Running Windows XP with whatever the latest service pack is as of 11-30-2009.
Video drivers and such are all up to date as of today as well.
AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+
      2 Gigs of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT video card

I’m actually curious what kind of system this game was tested on that made it seem stable enough to release to the public.

The game randomly crashes. Sometimes with 100% Speed of the graphiccard-fan (it’s the only one not manually controlled) and soundloop, sometimes a sudden restart. Lately I was able to play for about 3 hours without an error and then receiving only an Visual C(++) runtime error which only crashed the game but not the whole OS/Computer. Right now it seems to be between 5 and 20 minutes before a crash occurs.

The intro stories seem to work without any crash (except the one of the dalish-elves) ….

      Hardware:
Core2Duo E6400, 3GB Ram, ATI 3870 and enough fans to keep temperature at a maximum of 41° (CPU) / 55° (GPU) when playing.
      ATI Catalyst Drivers testet: 9.7, 9.9, 9.10, 9.11

      Hello,

      I have an ATI 5870, Catalyst 9.11 on a C2Q 9550, Asus P5Q Deluxe, 4GB Ram, Windows 7 64 bit.

I was having intermittent crashes in Dragon Age (every 5-15 minutes) until I turned off Catalyst AI, as well as disabled ATI HD Audio under Device Manager. This fixed it (one or the other, or both. I am happy that my problem was solved so I didn’t do any more tests to determine which one fixed it for me).

Exactly this issue, much the same as sean had. Yet I’ve not been able to find a way to fix it

I am running Windows XP64, and I cannot download any of the DLC. It does not even show up in the in-game menu.

      Hi,
I experienced the same problem as Aaron (see: 139. Nov 14th 2009) – crashing especially when talking to party members in- and outside the camp without any message, forcing me to reboot over the “reset”-botton of the “tower”. That occured after I opened my EA account in the camp an run the game in the state of “logged in”. After I logged out before resuming the game, this problem did not occur again – so far (I continued playing for about 2 hours without any problems – so far). Maybe this can help.

¡¡ DATA ERROR FIX (Temporary fix i think)!! Tested & playing

Lot of people have the “An error ocurred, data error” when try to install the game, and i can see that always when try to decompress any file at 99% the installer obtains an CRC error(Maybe beacause EADM with W7 dont works fine), well, the instructions:

01:Copy the CD Game files to an empty folder.
02:Test what .rar file have a corrupted by CRC file ^^.(I can see that a lot of people have corrupted only the file “textures.erf” which is into the “core.rar /package/core/data” file), but can be other.
03:Try or Buy a program like “RAR Repair Tool 4″, and repair (decompress) all files into the corrupted rar to another folder.

Ok now we have one folder with original files, and other with extracted corrupted files (the rest can be delete, we only want the corrupted files fixed).

04:Create a new folder, following the estructure of folders that the corrupted “.rar” file has.
05:Decompress all the files (without corrupted), into this folder.
06:Copy fixed files into this folder, as they are into the corrupted .rar.
07:Re-Compress this folder and rename it like the instaler folder.
08 make a backup of original corrupted rar, and paste our fixed rar.
      09: Run setup.exe or autorun.

The idea if u cant understand me (my english is horrible), is rebuild the corrupted rar with fixed files.

I have been playing lot of hours without any problems.
Is so long method, but is easier than download 7-8Gb another time.
If u want to download it again (i recommend this), now u can play some time before the download will finish.

I hope you can play now.

      (Sorry 4 my english lvl)

      2046 MB Ram
      DirectX 9.0C (4.09.0000.0904)

      Problem:

A minor problem is that somegimes lines will appear in my game and I have to exit to the main menu and load saved game to get rid of them. The game doesn’t crash and is playable, but it is still very inconvenient.
The big problem I have is sometimes my game just outright crashs with a studdering sound to the desktop. My desktop (which is at 19200×1200) then gets reset to default size and I have to change it back in the NVidia graphics panel. When I load the game a resolution message pops up near my system tray saying that the game is in a different resolution then my desktop etc… I was having the same problem when I was trying to play Borderlands but updating my NVidia drivers had fixed my crashing in that game.

For those having issues with installing. I suggest manually copying the files from the disc (Extracting all of the rars) to the respective locations. It can be done, takes some time, but you can do it. All the info you need to do this is written within’ the rars and the .cfg files. Good luck.

Game freezes (locks up computer) on startup. I don’t see any splash screen or error messages.

Solution: Disable your DVD drive in device manager, download the crack, works perfectly.

      ASUS Crosshair

      4 Gb DDR 400
      Nvidia 8800 GTS 640 Mb
      Ageia PhysX
      Creative X-fi Fatal1ty

      My problem was :
A lot of random crashes and freezes ingame in XP pro an X64

Solution for me (crashes rarely now):
disabled 1 of my cpu’s = taskmanager (crtl+alt+del), look for DAOrigins.exe, right mouse button, select “Set affinity” and then deselect one cpu.

I found this solution on another forum, I hope it may help more people out there ! Still runs very smooth, even with one cpu disabled :-D

I currently have the steam version, and when when it gets to the main menue, it looks great. But then when I click “new game” it crashes.

    251. Anonymous — December 28, 2009 @ 2:07 am

I’ve been getting the Data Error failure ever since this game came out. originally i was running my system off of one 750 gig hard drive, and now i have that plus a 2 tera. so instead of installing to my main drive i installed to the newer bigger drive and *poof* no error during installation.

Of course i immediately thought my old drive might be dying so i tested it, but it was ok. so it seems to me that when you download this game, or otherwise install it from a file on your system and not from the cd, it confuses the crap out of the bioware installation program unless its reading from one drive and installing to another.

Issues with crashing back to desktop. Generally after a conversation, occasionally at any load screen. Generally this would also accompany some weird texture issues. Mostly they were black. The machine would also respond very sluggishly most of the time right before it failed.
Tried going back with nvidia drivers. Seems like the earliest was 190.65. Driver didn’t seem to fix anything.

Ended up turning down the texture detail to medium instead of high and this has fixed 99% of the issues I was having. Graphics detail is still at 100%. This is with the steam version of the game. Funny, because I run crysis with just as good or better settings (full 1920×1200, no aa, everything set to high except a couple (texture detail being one) set to Very High.).

The problem did not start until I updated my GPU drivers to the newest available 195.82 (with Physx). The game ran fine, albeit with low framerate under the 176.xx version drivers. After updating to the 195.82 drivers, the game undergoes a crash to desktop very often. The fault module is always MSVCR80.dll.

While I am aware that the physx requires a GPU with 32 CUDA cores and 256MB Dedicated Memory, the 195.82 drivers have the physx component integrated.

I suspect that the game undergoes a CTD due to the GPU lacking the memory to calculate the C++ under the physx system. Can you confirm this and/or provide an alternate explanation/solution?

      Thank you in advance,
      DX

I played dragon age at around 5 and I’m at the temple in the mountains where the Urn or Ashes is supposedly located, it played perfectly well except for the long loading screen when I first got there, but its now 9 and I’m trying to play and its telling me “unable to open file. File may have been corrupted.” I tried loading the auto-saves before that point and it still doesn’t work but it works when I load way back to the dwarf parts. And it crashed twice on me when I closed the game and re-tried the auto-saves. I can also switch characters perfectly fine, but I don’t want to spend all those hours doing what I already had done.

DragonAge crashes to Desktop frequently and with no warning and error box appears: Dragon Age: Origins has stopped working. Send error report to MS? It’s a long shot since it could be anything causing these crashes, but hopefully this helps… What’s notable is that once the game crashes once, the likelihood of it crashing again increases until I reboot Windows.

This is a long post but hopefully you can make some headway and pick up where I left off and offer some ideas since Bioware/EA is not. I purchased and installed Dragon Age Origins for PC a few days ago. I played for about an hour or two and then stopped. I resumed today only to discover that every time I load a saved game a black screen appears and the game freezes and it freezes my computer. Either that or my computer just reboots on its own. If it becomes locked I can’t do anything so I have to reboot each time. I can get to the main screen every time and I can go through all the options but as soon as I try to load any game the loading screen comes up and either it freezes or reboots. Sometimes it goes further and my game actually loads and after about a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes of me moving around and doing things it reboots or locks up. It will also lock up sometimes before during and after cut scenes. I have different saved games (some as far as the wilderness) and I tried each one, thinking it was a problem with the game saved. Some saved games play for a while but then either lock up or it reboots. Its a shame because what I did play of this game it was really good. Kind of like a tease.

I did some research and apparently this is a pretty common problem. Not just on PC’s but consoles as well. Im not surprised there are so many posts on here and throughout the internet about problems with this game. Don’t believe me. Do your own Google search. If you are not having problems consider yourselves one of the luck ones.

I thought maybe it was my video card going bad so I troubleshot that. My video card is working fine. My computer specs are well beyond what is recommended (I built it myself).

      Here are my specs:
      OS: Windows 7 64Bit SP1 – all updates installed
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 3870 Driver v9.12
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450
Sound Card: SB XFI Fatality Pro Driver v6.0.1.13
      RAM: 4GB
Hard Drive: 551 of 596 GB free

I have tried everything I can think of. I have no problems with ANY other games that require hardware acceleration.

Here is what I have done in order (I tried playing after I did each item):
Uninstalled Dragon Age Origins and rebooted a total 5 times throughout this whole process
      Re-installed Dragon Age Origins
Tried different saved games – some go on longer than others but eventually they all freeze or reboot.
Tweaked the settings on Video options – turned everything off and or down to low, changed resolution and everything in between
      Installed Dragon Age 1.2 Patch
Re-installed current ATI HD 3870 Video Card Driver Patch for Win 7
Ran 2 different video card testers – a video card stability tester and a burn in test – both where good
Ran other Games at the highest settings to see if they had problems to – Sins of a Solar Empire, (Tried Crysis and CC&C 4 before) – no problems
I even started all over from the beginning and after a while it did it again
Tried the other CD reader – I have two
      Disabled Sound
Disabled my ATI all in wonder TV Tuner Card
      Checked BIOS for I/O conflicts
Ran in compatibility mode as administrator
Not sure what to do next.

The only thing I can think of since all my other games work is Bioware’s “configuration Utility” is trying override or change things and its messing things up. Also, I think it’s a little unusual the game created a folder and is saving games under users\my user\my documents\bioware\dragonage\characters. I have never seen a game create and store files in my documents, but maybe this is normal and the way Bioware designed it. Maybe it has something to do with the way the game is trying to save and retrieve saved game files. Also, I wonder if this game was developed to run with a Quad core PC. I dont see why not but most people have duo or single core processors. Not Quad cores. Maybe there is a problem with the coding.

Bioware/EA tech support for this game has been abysmal. I have emailed their tech support back and forth everyday now. Their responses in this order where: manually uninstall the game by deleting the folder (as opposed to going to add/remove programs or the in game uninstall), my saved games might be corrupted (they told me how to copy and paste the character save folder – thanks, and currently to run it as adminstrator and in compatibility mode. What a joke. Regardless though I hope Bioware can get this fixed (or I stumble across something). I really want to play this game!

      Solution to the awc.dll error:
Create a shortcut to EAAccessInstaller which is found under Dragon Age\Software. ( or, your_dragon_age_folder\bin_ship )

Edit the shortcut properties, Target line. After the existing text enter

      /s /dir C:\(Your Folder)\Dragon Age\bin_ship

Addition to the awc.dll error (The game cannot launch because of a misconfiguration. Please reinstall your game and try again.) solution
If it won’t help, try launching eacoreserver.exe within dragon age\bin_ship directory. Also, you can try to change the shortcut from the previous comment not to the bin_ship directory, but to your dragon_age_dir.

I’ve done both three things, worked for me after launching eacoreserver.exe file.

With Windows 7, went to Denerium market with PC (human mage), Allistar, Zevran, and dog. Cant get back to world map even after Weylon says to look for Bro. in Callendar Docks. Also , there is no “star” showing where players are to move.

I entered the “new game” after the installation and there was no problem. I took a look around at the game and exited. there were two dark strips on the top and bottom of the desktop, I re-entered the game the top of the screen was fluttering like the distortion in the old video cassette players when you fast forwarded. I have the latest VGA and Sound card driver installed. my system is Intel Core Duo 2.4 (3 megabites of cache)+ Asus Geforce 9400 gt, 512 megabite of memory+ 2 GB of RAM+ windows xp service pack 3

      Windows XP/Nvidia GeForce 8800GT, driver 181.22

I’ve played through Dragon Age with occasional crashes, all of which were fixed with a reboot.

However, I cannot get through the final battle with the archdemon without a crash, whether the video settings are at maximum or minimum. Rebooting only leads to another crash.

Games crashes at the start, ‘failed to detect a supported video game’
i do not understand why its doing this…

    293. Scorp — January 29, 2010 @ 1:26 am

I checked through the posts and found a repeating events for nvidia 8600 and 8800 users. I myself have 8800gtx video card and experience the same problem as posters from no:
      26. – the way he descirbed it was totaly the same as my case
      69.
      77.
      94.
      137.
      144.
      206.

Basically: Game will play anywhere between 5-25 minutes, including character selection if making a new one. It will crash at any part of the game, selection, dialog, fighting. I will get a quick split second blue screen and then my PC will restart. (auto restart can be turned off to see the details of the BSOD text) but blue screen usually does not write a specific error as you get with stuff like: “irql_not_less_or_equal” etc.

I forgot to mention I also have AMD 6000 x2 like most of the posters I wrote in my previous post. So maybe this is a connection of some sort to. =]

dragon age fails to authenticate the disk??? i tried both disks. are you even meant to play with the disk???

    296. Christophe — February 2, 2010 @ 8:36 pm

      Lorenz..
i got that msg to , disk one has to be in the disc drive to allow the game to run…

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
EVGA GeForce GTX 275 896MB SC

      Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Dragon Age\bin_ship\DAOrigins.exe

pop up after hr of play says the program has stopped running
and theres the faulting application path..

oh and Lorenz, uninstall the game, reinstall only using disc one, leave disc 2 alone, and run with disc one in the disc drive

    298. FotF — February 4, 2010 @ 10:28 am

When I press play, It says “Failed to authenticate the disc. Please insert the correct disc and try again.” O_O I’m PRETTY sure I have the right disc in…is there another way for my to play?

DAO kept on crashing without warnings or error messages. Only after I underclocked the FSB and PCIE bus and turned off Anti-Aliasing did it stop doing that. My ATI HD4650 cannot be overclocked with these settings without stability issues either. I’m using the newest version of CCC, and downgrading it would likely have been both messy and unnecessary. I believe unstable RAM/VRAM is to blame for game crashes, but I’m not certain. Try underclocking anything and everything.

Also of note is that there’s a memory leak, but on 2 GB of RAM you’d have to play for a rather long time or switch zones a lot in order to have your computer crash from that.

For others having difficulty with the game, you can also try setting the affinity for DAO to a single processor. Some people have found this to be an effective solution, but it didn’t work for me. Your mileage may vary.
