Solution :

1. Pause your game (hit esc.).
2. Press Alt-Tab, so you back to desktop without quitting the game.
3. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del.
4. Choose the “Processes” button.
5. Find “Masseffect2.exe” (or something like that).
6. Right click on it, and set the priority high (I choose the “realtime” and it works fine, no more sudden lag. Maybe the “AboveNormal” or “High” would help you too depends on your CPU)

Problem #8 : Mass Effect 2 Stuttering/Skipping sound problem
Solution #1 : Turn down or disable Directsound Acceleration. If this doesn’t fix it remember to reenable it
Solution #2 :

Check your soundcard drivers as well. Most people tend to ignore those. If you have built in sound, go to your motherboard/computer (Dell, HP etc) manufacturers website and look for an update OR conversely, uninstall it, reboot and see what windows comes up with instead OR uninstall it, reboot and reinstall from the website or CD (even if there isn’t an update).
Check and make sure you don’t have AntiViri running ( or SpyBot S&D etc). If you do, disable it (them).

Solution #3Go to Start, then Run, then type in DxDiag. Find the audio/sound tab(s) and change the acceleration from full to a lower setting such as basic acceleration.
credits: CodeR3d Solution #4“Don’t know about you guys, but I have the G15 keyboard. And when I was running LCD Misc, it caused the game to stutter. Completely exited all of the G15 apps and the stutter is solved on my end! Good luck to everyone else!”

“X:\Programs\Mass Effect 2\Binaries\MassEffect2.exe” -nomoviestartup
credits: Kheldrion (in gamingnewslink comments)

Problem #14 : Mass Effect 2 freezing on the main menu
Solution : Freezing in the main menu was can be caused by Zone Alarm (firewall) denying MassEffect2.Exe accest tp internet. Allowing it to access the net can fix the problem
credits: Andrzej (through gamingnewslink comments)

Problem #15 : Mass Effect 2 error message during install “A required Setup file is missing [Z:\\\\\\\\data\\\\\\\\english.rar]”
Solution :

1. Copy ME Disc 1 using an image burner (used Daemon Tools Lite and saved it as a .ISO not .mds)

2.
Finish copying Disc 1 and then repeat the process for Disc 2 (my disc 2
appeared to quit at about 50%, and disc 1 was only about 2.67 gigs big).

3.
Virtually mount Disc 1 (using Daemon) and let it install, leaving Disc
2 inside the tray after burning (I can’t say if you should or shouldn’t
burn disc 2, but mine was in the tray and I did not have to mount the
.ISO from disc 2 so you do the math).

4. It should run through, no disc swaps.
5. After install put in Disc 1 and play. Confirmed. No errors. Succesfully connected to cerberus network and started game.

Installing game (have tried both C: and D: drive partitions, running 64-bit so installing in programfiles(x86), error comes up during last 90% of movies extraction:
Unable to load file. Installation failed.

Please help! Waited so long and I am really sad at not being able to play this!

  7. Vittorio — January 27, 2010 @ 11:34 am

The Dialogue is virtually non-existent in game. I tried getting all new drivers, everything pretty much. What the hell is going on?

  8. Justin — January 27, 2010 @ 11:46 am

Game doesn’t seem to be compatible with Steam. Can’t verify the integrity of Game cache through Steam, nor launch the game. Steam’s launch window doesn’t even pop-up when you try and launch it. And the Game cache validation window doesn’t even load fully (as you can hover over the taskbar icon and see it’s not fully loaded) plus it gets stuck at the top-left of my screen which means it’s not totally initialized. I hope they make an update soon to fix this.

  9. Justin — January 27, 2010 @ 1:01 pm

Ah, you can disregard what I said earlier. I have now fixed all my issues by simply running the game as administrator (doing this by going to the properties of the game’s exe).

Ok, are you guys experiencing major slow down (the frame-rate goes extremely) choppy after Shepard went into peculiar point of location or open area? Maybe I can help.

(Currently, I’m using Windows XP SP2 and ME2 works beautifully.)

And now, I’m thinking about disabling the multi-core blah blah. It’s definetly a CPU setting problem.

  13. Shadow — January 27, 2010 @ 5:48 pm

There is a fix for those who freezes after new game. The loading files are not compatible with mostly solo core computers due to the loading files are 720p. You have to find and replace those loading files with a modded version.

I hit a critical freeze when I activate the galaxy map during the part of the game, “The IFF is almost complete”

  14. Ninja — January 27, 2010 @ 5:49 pm

“A data error has occurred, installation aborted” – occurs during installation, usually after the cutscenes have been unpacked, not sure what exactly is going on since it gives no further explanation.

  15. Somedude — January 27, 2010 @ 5:59 pm

    @Shadow.
Know where I can find those modded loading files?

  16. wth — January 27, 2010 @ 6:25 pm

as a renegade soldier after 20 hours of gameplay the game goes into black screen after the reaper iff has been installed (everytime even tried reinstall and keeping saves), dunno if its my system or the game release itself but pretty damn annoying!

so if any1 could confirm they got past that point or completed the game as a renegade would be awesome!

  17. EC — January 27, 2010 @ 9:30 pm

My game can’t even start, I’ve installed the game successfully however I can’t start it after pressing the shortcut. It says disk authentication error. I’ve tried inserting the disks through the two drives but that doesn’t work. The game itself is obviously open since after the error box closed when i press no , the main menu for the game pops up for a second and closes itself again. Please help!

    Thanks in advance

Problem solution #7 sadly doesn’t seem to Work on my computer. I Have “Intel core duo quad”, and tried to do as said, but that made the problem even worse. The game started to freeze even more often. But thanks for the advice anyway! It was worth to try!

Game worked fine until I was finally able to connect to Cerberus Network Server some 24 hours after buying teh game. After the game updated/installed all of the DL content to ME2 (Armor, Normandy Crash Site, Merc. Character) game will freeze, then lock up and crash to desktop whenever I try to adjust weapons in ANY weapons locker or right before a mission.

Had anyone else experienced this problem?

Been having a Stuttering problem, can run the game maxed settings, But it stutters for 15-20 seconds every 3-4 seconds. However during that short time i’m running a smooth 30-45 FPS, I have no idea how to fix it. I’ve updated just about every driver, Lowered ingame settings etc.

  35. Rivian — January 28, 2010 @ 8:18 am

For those who experiencing performance issues, free application like Game Booster 1.3 could help you to subdue the problem. You can find the download link, here:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/317222466/Game_Booster_1.30.rar

(the software is in Rar, no viruses or any other malacious software)

    Hope it helps.

  36. surfsimply — January 28, 2010 @ 8:33 am

Having same problem as #14, installation aborts because of a “data error”. Using Windows 7, 64. Game installs on Vista laptop, so it’s not bad disks. Tried installing from HD, in XP compatibility mode, and other things. No luck. Suggestions are more than welcome.

  37. CodeR3d — January 28, 2010 @ 9:55 am

My computer freezes shortly after I select the gender of the character to be made. A loading screen appears after this selection, but then locks up and the computer appears to stop processing. There are no apparent problems with video, but I turned the video options very far down to be sure. Sound was causing some skips in the opening cinematics, but was fixed by changing the level of sound acceleration.

System Specs: 2.4 Ghz AMD Turion 44-ML, XP 32 bit, 2 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS 256 MB, with all updated drivers (Alienware Laptop)

  38. Guller — January 28, 2010 @ 10:56 am

Figured out the Stuttering during the opening scene seems to be related to Bink video systems. Every time a bink video is played the game will start to go into stutter mode, I’ve also noticed the majority of people with this problem are on AMD systems single, duo, triple AND quad cores are all affected it seems. There’s no known fix other than to sweat it out and save the game and reload and it’ll fix itself.

  39. Phil — January 28, 2010 @ 11:11 am

Just did the Single core fix and got past the loading freeze. But now, during the first video, it freezes every 2 seconds for about 2-3 seconds non-stop. The sound is perfect though.

  40. CodeR3d — January 28, 2010 @ 12:15 pm

Thus far, I have fixed my freezing at the loading screen by downloading a single core no intro fix (can be googled). However, the cinematic following new character creation is lagging with extreme pauses (similar to Phil #38 above, etc). The sound does work flawlessly though. I’m looking into a way to fix this problem.

  41. 93D — January 28, 2010 @ 12:45 pm

I seem to be getting intermitted freezes that can last for 0.5-3 seconds. Usually happens during combat (or maybe that’s when I notice it most). Also happens sometimes when I try to run.

in case this is related to hardware, i have a ati 5870 and a core i7.

  42. wth — January 28, 2010 @ 1:55 pm

there is a workaround for the black screen after reaper iff has been installed tought id share it, just go to gamecopyworld find mass effect2 and download the save file it make u start after that mission as a paragon soldier..

Still having problems with the voices in Mass Effect 2,they are very low,and hard to here.Music, sound effect’s all ok.Just voice’s are to low,and sometimes none at all.The Game run’s great otherwise.Shouldn’t this game run in a 7.1 audio environment? Will they have a patch to fix this low voice problem on 7.1 audio systems, and Realtek on board sound?

    Running on;
    Windows XP Pro Sp2
    Athlon 64 X2 4400+ cpu
    Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939

ATI X1950 PRO 512mb AGP Video
    Realtek On-board AC97′ALC850 8 channel audio

  45. Ogre — January 28, 2010 @ 3:55 pm

Error: Mass Effect 2 load screens take an exceptionally long time on multi-core systems. (45s to 1m+)

Fix: Alt-tab when not in a loading screen, Ctrl-Alt-Del to open task manager. Scroll down to MassEffect2.exe, right click and go to Set Affinity. Turn off all but your first core in the list, click Okay. Wait about 15 seconds, Set Affinity again and turn the cores back on. same problem as poster #3 (aybee) and poster #19 (Burek).

there are strong trails left in the options screen and other menus that don’t disappear, and the game crashes right after the first sequence, where you are about to select class etc.

let’s try to find a common point, i have a 9600gt video card, and 2gb of ram on vista 32 bit. i have the latest drivers etc, tried all the common solutions.

If you replace all the original “load” files with these from the fix,you wont get to finish the game, and it will hang at that IFF mission and you wont be able to play any further, just replace the files i told you about!

If you already replaced all the original load files with one from the fix,do this:
Insert your DVD1,go to the data folder, and then open up movies cab and extract only the file that have “load” in front of them!
Then replace the fallowing files, with the files from this fix!
replace the original files with these:
    oad_f01
    load_f02c
    load_f02d
    load_f03
    load_f03b
    load_f05
    load_f06
    load_f08
    load_f08b
    load_f08c
    load_f08d
    load_f09
    load_f09b
    load_f09c
    load_f09d
    load_f14
    load_f15
    load_f80_ESN
    load_f80_INT

I’m having a problem with sound. Every time I load the game, the BioWare and EA screens have sound, but most (but not all of the time) the game will not have sound after that. I don’t think this is a driver problem since sometimes the game will have sound and I’ll be able to play, but more often than not, I’ll lose sound after the EA screen.

  57. CodeR3d — January 29, 2010 @ 6:03 am

For those of you with sound problems, the first thing I would suggest is: Go to Start, then Run, then type in DxDiag. Find the audio/sound tab(s) and change the acceleration from full to a lower setting such as basic acceleration.

Had the same Problem starting the game. After choosing male/female/import game froze. Found the following workaround: Create a shortcut to the game exe, then changing the command to
    “X:\Programs\Mass Effect 2\Binaries\MassEffect2.exe” -nomoviestartup
you simply add -nomoviestartup to the command

this lets you skip the intro movie. Worked perfectly fine for me. My guess is that I´ll run into another movie sequence sooner or later, freezing the game again, but at least i can start playing the game, hoping that they´ll fix the issue in the meantime.

  64. BladeRy — January 30, 2010 @ 12:56 am

I am out of my mind with the stupid stutter problem after animations. I can ply the game solidly with 30+ FPS, and 50+ while walking around. I am amazed how good this game goes with old hardware. But every time i see a animation my FPS slows to shit.I get 1-2 sec gameplay and 5-6sec game freeze, only way to fix it is to save and reload the game, and here we go..40+ FPS again. Ingame animations go smothly, i guess there is a problem how this game uses stupid Bink movies.

    Exactly the same as #62.
I used the fix of #48 Vetrelec as I’m running on a single core AMD 3500+.
Bink videos run smoothly, then it freezes 5-6 seconds with about 1-2 seconds gameplay, and as soon as there is a reload, it runs perfectly smoothly, with details maxed.

    I’m sceptical…

  66. Delmain — January 30, 2010 @ 3:07 am

I’m getting the loading screen freezes and the intermittent crashes during regular gameplay. The worst place I’ve gotten both so far is Korlus. When the game is going to lock up on a loadscreen, I get two different actions. When I’ve got the game on fullscreen, the video for the loadscreens will play for about 5 minutes just looping and then stop. The audio stops after about a minute and a half. If it’s on windowed, the video will stop after about 30 seconds and the audio will loop for a long time, but the mouse will appear on the mass effect window in the waiting animation. About a minute after the video stops, windows will error out that MassEffect2.exe has caused an error and is no longer responding.

    Computer stats:
    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz
    8GB DDR2
Nvidia GTX260 896MB VRAM (Drivers updated to 196.21)
    Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (6.1.7600)

  67. Delmain — January 30, 2010 @ 3:22 am

Oh, and I just tried the green loading screen fix just to see if it impacts what happens at all. It doesn’t, same behavior just with a green square instead of the video. It still freezes and the audio does the same thing it was doing before. That officially puts me at having no idea what the heck is going on.

“I hit PLAY and nothing happens.” (Windows XP)

    FIX (for me):

    1. Install Directx 10 for Windows XP
    here: http://www.techmixer.com/download-directx-10-for-windows-xp/

    2. Run Windows Automatic Updates manually and make sure you have WIndows .NET 3.5 Framework.

DOOOOOOOOD those of you who have the freaking Freeze Movie problem, (Loading freeze, lag after movies etc) Just create shortcut to desktop for your masseffect2.exe (NOT LAUNCHER), right click it, and press PROPERTIES, there should be target slot with something like this “C:\Program Files\Mass Effect 2\Binaries\MassEffect2.exe”, Just type in -nomovies in the end of the freakin Target, and the game goes flawlessly! It must look something like this “C:\Program Files\Mass Effect 2\Binaries\MassEffect2.exe” -nomovies (Don’t copy the freakin target from me cuz I don’t know for shiz where you installed your freakin game :D ) SIMPLE AS ALL HELL

  85. sccrmania1 — January 31, 2010 @ 7:46 pm

Location specific Mass Effect 2 crashes:

Certain locations in Mass Effect 2 will crash (Perhaps only on systems just meeting or below the system requirments). No known fix at the momment but I have put together a workaround:

-Resume from the last save before the location where it crashed
-Move up to the area before it crashed
-Save to a new save slot
-Continue to the crash area, game will crash
-Open Mass Effect 2 and load up the save you made
-The area should no longer crash.

This workaround is irritating as it doesn’t always work 100% and I have had to do it several times, but it may help.

    Problem: Yellowing screen

This problem start immediately in the main menu, making it very hard to read. So.. I just installed Mass Effect 2 and this is my problem :

The game works fine except that the camera won’t move at all. My mouse works in every other ways (shooting, aiming, doing stuff in the menu), but it won’t move the camera. Won’t let me chose dialogues option either.
Of course I just started the game and obviously I cannot pass the very first mission.

Since you just solved some mouse issues (and I may actually use your tips once I get it to work), could you guess what my problem could be?

I have a DualCore 6850 with 2Go Ram, Geforce 8800 GTS, Windows 7 32bit premium, and I use a Logitech MX Revolution as my mouse.
I use dual screen for my computer (may be related.. who knows)
I have the last Nvidia driver, DirectX11 (I did also install DirectX9c just to be sure)
    I run MassEffect2.exe as administrator.

I’m taking any guesses at this point.. shoot.

    About Freezing Intermittently:

This happened to me during the combat missions, the screen at some point freezes and the pixels gained different colors and the sound glitches. I have changed the drivers video, chip set, audio and still nothing. I thought that the game deserves a path and than I came with the idea to run a benchmark (3Dmark vintage) and of course the video card test revealed that it has artifacts. So, in my case the the Freezing Intermittently was because of the damaged video card. For those who are experiencing the same problem have a test with a benchmark, you’ll never know. I have replaced the card and everything is going well. Cheers!

  101. Tom — February 2, 2010 @ 2:07 am

I was suffering from the error “Mass effect 2 has stopped working” on Vista on startup. I tried various suggestions but nothing worked. Eventually managed to fix it, can’t guarantee it will work for everyone but might help some of you.

For me, I think the problem was related to having 2 DVD drives and some kind of DVD copy protection system that the game ships with, can’t be sure but just my suspicion due to the fact that no other discs give me errors with my drives.

Firstly, I was getting an error on disc swapping during install if the 2 discs were in separate drives (“Please insert disc 2″). Ignored this at first but after installing and trying to run, an error came up saying please insert the disc. Swapped the disc into the other drive which seemed to bypass this before just crashing on a black screen.

Uninstalled, then re-installed and only used my primary DVD drive to install both discs from (rather than having 1 disc in each drive, probably didn’t make a difference but tried it nonetheless). Tried to run – “Please insert the disc” (It’s already in there you B*ST*RD!!!), downloaded a nocd crack and game works fine.

I won’t post any links to possible illegal files and wouldn’t normally suggest it but it bloody annoys me that a brand new game won’t read properly because of lazy/incompetent publishing, probably due to some system there to stop pirating, the irony being it’s the pirates who have allowed my £35 product to work.

However, the cinematic following new character creation is lagging with extreme pauses (similar to Phil #38 above, etc). The sound does work flawlessly though. I’m looking into a way to fix this problem.”

I did update my sound drivers lately (Realtek), my Nvidia 275 GTX video cart is also updated as of today. Latest DirectX 9.0c for Windows XP SP3 is also installed. I have set sound to basic or no acceleration (at none, the sound has a distortion in it, with basic it works nice). Has anyone found somethings that I can try?

Your installation problems section should be updated with this information please:

    http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/766531/1

My specific problem as stated on here #24, #45 and #67 was that the second DVD would not continue the installation and I was left with pressing RETRY forever. I thought I had that worked out by simply extracting all the .RAR files to the correct folder since I was able to run the game and when I inserted DVD 1 it was recognized as a legit installation. However this way of doing things gave me graphic problems in the options menus and crashed my game after the Lazarus scene right before the character creation every time.

The fix as stated on the Bioware forums in the link I provided is to image both discs as .ISO, which can be done with a program such as Daemon Tools Lite. You then mount the first image and it brings up the installation menu and should run through the entire installation fine with no second disc insertion. As the solution says on the forums though, you might want to have DVD 2 in the drive when you’re doing this. I noticed that when I did it there appeared to be activity on my drive when it was suppose to be going through the second disc image instead.

After it was all done everything was up and running fine. Hope this helps some people out. Good luck.

    FYI – system specs include:
    Windows Vista 32
    AMD Phenom II X4 965 3400
    nVidia Geforce GTX260
    all updated drivers

I have exactly that problem. I get passed the dialogue with joker and edi, telling me to take the shuttle then it cuts out and nothing… just darkness. I can hear faint sounds of the crew still though, weird.

  108. Scorpion — February 3, 2010 @ 5:02 pm

For everyone having install issues, the resolve is really simple. Just copy everything from the disks into a folder, from both disks. You’ll end up overwriting the language files, but that’s okay. It will continue the install through to the end.

I was having the issue of it not installing but rather than it just saying insert disk, my computer locked up. So I ripped the disks and it didn’t help at all. I then ended up extracting the ISOs to a folder. Copying them from the disk directly into a folder of both disks combined in 1 folder is exactly the same.

Another issue involving game stutter for some of you that have Nvidia cards, I found a trick that Helps but does NOT cure it. Before I was having it lag every second for just a split second. Really annoying as it made the game aggravating to play. If you go into your Nvidia settings and change the Maximum Pre-rendered frames to 8, it helps quite a bit. Now I get the skip every other second rather than every second. It makes it a lot more playable, but damn is it annoying.

I had the solve fixed before in the past but I forgot what I did exactly. Since it did it with all the Bioware games. Jade Empire, ME1, etc. I think it had to do with just one driver.

For anyone tempted to update their Nvidia drivers to 196, I strongly recommend against it. I’m Running W7 and it caused some seriously instability. 195 is a good alternative. And even when I had the system stable, 191, 195, 196 and the beta versions inbetween did not fix any of the lag.

I’m running a Nvidia 9600 GT (2GB) on an AMD 4200 X2 on the Asus Crosshair motherboard. Running AC97 onboard sound.

I’m going to tinker with more of the other options, including sound to see if I can fix it. I hope what I posted here helps someone.

I guess you probably already know this, but there is an interesting thread going on in the BioWare forums about single cpu’s freezing and lagging movies. Lots of stuff have been discussed here, but there is something about a Coalesced.ini in BioGame\\Config\\PC\\Cooked. This might be responsible for a lot of problems.

Check the forum for more info.
    http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/905917/2

Page 1 has the info already discussed here, but page 2 comes up with the .ini and several other fixes for duo and multi cores.

  110. SwedishChef — February 3, 2010 @ 7:24 pm

I was having the same problem with the second disk not detecting during the install. I got it to work though. I copied all the files from both discs into seperate folders on the harddrive. Then I created the folder within my Program Files directory (Mass Effect 2) All the .rar files from both discs were then extracted into that directory. It should sort it’s own folders when extracting so don’t panic. Run the launcher then close it quickly. Note sure why or if it makes a difference but I was following someone else’s steps to try and get this to work. As long as the launcher comes up you’re all good. Not sure where this next file goes but there should be a “Mass Effect 2_code.exe” file somewhere in there. I think it was the Data directory. Run that file and input your code. After it closes rerun the launcher and you should be good to go.

    Happy shooting peeps :)

Well… looks like i’m not alone… maybe if i comment here, it will get a feedback. Ok, first i have problem with loading screen after i import my ME1 save character, glad it was solved after read social.bioware.com forum. Afer a while load looks normal, nothing seems problem, but its still far from end problem, when opening conversation the lagging that abnormal, its so frustrated rate in game, the weird is scene when Joker and ship got shoot, that scene smooth running then suddenly damn lag again. I try with all low setting and still no luck. I realize about single core CPU but I believe its not my rig spec, i use AMD 3800+, 1.5 GB RAM, 9500GT 512MB. Hope the patch release soon…

Okay. Completely fixed all problems on my end.

Don’t know about you guys, but I have the G15 keyboard. And when I was running LCD Misc, it caused the game to stutter. Completely exited all of the G15 apps and the stutter is solved on my end! Good luck to everyone else!

    1. copy original movies(load*.bik) back to the …\BioGame\Movies\ directory
    2. run the game (do not press any key)
    3. wait for play the movie (trailer)
    4. load your game

Problem: Can’t install/ will not read 2nd DVD of Colectors Edition.

    Solution:
Step 1) Create folder C:\ME, Step2) Copy all the contents of DVD2 into folder,
Step3)Copy all the contents of DVD1 into the same folder overwriting files (accept all defaults when coping including overwriting of files),
Step 4) Leave DVD1 in DVD drive, but run the install file from within the folder ME.

    For Single Core Users:
I beat the game yesterday despite my single-core platform. The workaround is to use -nomovies on your shortcut targeting the masseffect2.exe file (not the launcher!). There are examples above in this forum.

When you need to go into the citadel, replace all of the original movie loading files with the single core fix files temporarily and boot the game without the -nomovies. This will play the Citadel movie and get you on it. I recommend you keep those settings as your on the citadel. When you get off the Citadel, restore your game to the “normal settings” meaning enabling -nomovies.

After the IFF mission, there is a point where the game will black screen after the galaxy map. The only workaround which proves effective is to replace the following load files: load_f01.bik, load_f80_ESN.bik, and load_f80_INT.bik with the single core fix files. Then boot the game without the -nomovies. This will play the movies after this point if you did it right. Unfortunately, the game will give you a lag bomb after the first movie. You can’t save for a short time after this movie due to it being a “special scenario” let’s say. You’ll have to play through this scenario with the lag, but it won’t last too long so just man it out. When its all done (about 3 movies) and a few minutes of horrendous lag, you can save again. Save, then reload the game with -nomovies enabled.

Hope that helps. You miss out on the endgame movies, but there is likely a way to get around that. Either way, you can play the game and see all the ingame cutscenes (which comprise almost the entire game anyways).

I have the same exact problem as skwareballz. I’ve tried changing my graphics settings, both in game and forcing it from the Nvidia control panel. Nothing seems to work.

The laser will reactivate after positioning the first mirror, and the game will crash approximately 2 seconds after becoming visible.

For those on vista 32 bit with a realtek soundchip try:
    http://downloads.guru3d.com/Realtek-3D-SoundBack-Beta-0.1-download-1996.html

Yes it’s very old and beta but I had some of the described problems,
specificaly with the game crashing after the operation of shepard
at the beginning of the game, after installing and utilizing
3d soundback the game no longer crashed at that point.

The program adds a number of dll(s) to the game dir
    - dsound
    - realtek openal wrapper
    - ini file with nr of buffers and voices
It does not need to run in the background the dll’s
    are called through directX.

It’s excact function seems similar to alchemy of creative
and allows backward compatibility with directsound dx9
functionality that’s been dropped with vista.
    See:
    http://forums.creative.com/t5/Windows-Vista/Audio-in-Windows-Vista/m-p/302341

Note: the topic of hardware acceleration.

According to some sources Realtek HD audio is not supported
by ea (does not mean the the game will not work, but could not work properly)

The unreal engine or it’s audio parts (fmod, wise, etc) seems to
be more directsound driven (for example distance of source and it’s relative volume)
this could be the reason that, at least with me, the problem was
fixed and in general the audio experince was generally better.

If you want to find out if audio is the probelem you
can also switch it off in the:
    C:\Users\yourname\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect 2\BIOGame\Config\GamerSettings.ini

    DisableAudio=False
    to
    DisableAudio=True

If the game no longer crashes at a specific point then
there is a reasonable chance that it is audio related
(not 100% because texture lod settings can trigger frame rate
issues which in turn *can* manifest in audio problems)

    Tip:
Use realtek loudness equalization (in the hd manager of realtek)
if you want in general louder audio.

On a side note rise of the argonauts which crashes a lot on
my system (laptop acer) has become a lot more stable, was
crashing a lot on the fmod audio dll.

I, and many others, using Nvidia cards have a problem with the blue lightning effects used by praetorians and the reaper core. Looking at the eyes of the bugs while they’re firing, or the core while it is opening or closing makes us crash with “this program has stopped responding”.

The current workaround for this is when fighting the praetorians do not look at them. Fire with heavy weapons or a sniper rifle only when they’re not looking at you or using their beam. With the reaper core, look away from the doors until you hear them be fully open then fire the Cain hw or anything hard hitting you can. As soon as the door begins to close again look away.

midgame. Since then, it’s crashed everytime. I tried reinstalling the

Im having the same problem that people have repeated, with the Black Screen after the IFF has been installed, and the response is to reload the old files. The only issue I have with this, is that Ive got the Deluxe Digital Edition copy, so I dont have the CD to just copy those filed back to their original directory. Also, in order for the game to run, I need the single core fix, which replaces all the loading screens with a green screen. Without that, the game just freezes up during the initial Continue Game load. Any way to get those replacement files from a DL?

    solution to problem #10

    from http://www.overclock.net
“The nice guys over at SCC-TDS have found the bug and have just released a fix for it
    The link: http://scc-tds.net/games-fixes/69285…tml#post796717
    Thanks for the help! ”

Said solution is a file BIOG_UIWorld.pcc which you should place into \MassEffect 2\BioGame\CookedPC folder.
This file didn’t exist there before, not on my installation anyway.

Before that my game would crash on the first loading screen (with Shepard scull) before you can even save for the first time. It also solved all “blurry” interface issues.

I tried everything else – new drivers, PhysiX, fiddling with nVidia controls, enforcing AA etc. Nothing affected anything but this file solved everything. Hope it helps someone.

Note: my PC is Win XP SP3, 8800GTX
I run MassEffect2Launcher as-is without any modifying arguments (don’t use -nomovies or anythig else)
I did not have any sound or stuttering issues prior this fix and my .bik files all intact.

I obviously only just started to play (because before I couldn’t pass over damn scull ;) so can say nothing about “in game” issues.

At this point the game is physically impossibly to play with how horribly slow it is running. It’s nearly impossible to navigate through the menus because of how slow it is running, and even getting into the game it’s still just as bad. Ok, so this is weird: I was doing the mission with the Reaper IFF and made it all the way to the iff, but decided to hack the wall safe first. Messed up and tried to reload – except I couldn’t. The reload takes literally forever, and now so do all my other reaper ship saves. I can reload a pre-iff save, but I can’t enter the reaper IFF mission anymore – loading it up takes forever as well.

    Three words: WTF?
