The graphical and gameplay complexity of bioshock doesn’t come without flaws. Aside from having high system requirements, some people who still meet or exceed the Bioshock system requirements still can’t run the game because of bioshock startup errors or bioshock mid-game crashes. Listed below are the collected bioshock errors along with the corresponding solution. If the problems the bioshock problems you encounter are not listed below or the ones listed do not work, feel free to scroll further down and write all about it so you can notify me and I’ll help you find a workaround for that error.
Problem : I tried running Bioshock but it wont startup for me. I meet the minimum/recommended system requirements for bioshock but i still can’t run it.
Solution : Bioshock will have problems running on older video card drivers. Make sure y0u are using the latest one. Also, download the latest DirectX redist version here if you still haven’t done yet.
Solution #2 : for ATI users who experience problems starting up Bioshock, you should try to download the hotfix from ATI here : ATI: Driver Hot Fix
Problem : i get this error message “Bioshock.exe – This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem” or this one Bioshock C++ runtime error.
Solution : The CD should have a copy of the C++ 2005 redist package. Download Microsoft Visual C++2005 Redistribution package (x86) if it is not in the Bioshock CD.
Problem : Bioshock gives the following error:- The instructions at “0×78147440″ referenced memory at “0×00000000″. The memory could not be “written”.
Solution : BioShock requires virtual memory to run properly. If your virtual memory settings are not correct, you may experience stability problems.
To configure virtual memory:
On Windows XP
- From the start menu, open Settings/Control Panel.
- Double click the System icon.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- Click on the Performance/Settings button.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- Click on the Virtual memory/Change button.
- Select the drive that BioShock is installed on.
- Select the “System managed size” radio button in the “Paging file size for selected drive”.
- Click the Set button.
- Click OK multiple times to return to the desktop.
On Windows Vista
- From the start menu, open Settings/Control Panel.
- Select System and Maintenance.
- Select System.
- Select Advanced System Settings.
- Click on the Performance/Settings button.
- Select the Advanced tab
- Click on the Virtual memory/Change button.
- Check “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives”
- Click OK multiple times to return to the desktop.
Problem : Black Screen on Startup error. When you start the game it hangs at a black Screen
Solution : 5_day_forecast – “For me, codec conflicts were causing me to be unable to even launch the game for an entire day. Another poster figured out what was crashing the game (a codec GOMplayer installed that didn’t agree with BIoshock’s audio system), and since I uninstalled the conflicting software it’s been smooth sailing.”
Problem : While playing Bioshock, The Atlas radio audio or generally all speech is quiet.
Solution : If you experience reduced volume voiceovers during game play while the master volume is turned up, go into the Windows Volume/Playback Controls and set the Wave volume to max. This can be found in the Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Volume Control.
Problem : Bioshock AutoPatcher Time out error
1) pick an ip+port from http://www.publicproxyservers.com/page1.html.
2) open internet explorer (even if u use firefox etc) and insert that ip and port into proxy setting.
3) make sure http://www.2kgames.com loads (patcher will probably connect if you can get this).
4) download a file thru internet explorer or something to make sure the proxy server is a decent speed.
5) start the installer for bioshock and when it gets to the patcher pray that the server isnt blocked.
Problem : Bioshock runs slow on Vista with a DirectX 10 Card.
Solution : Download the hotfix from ATI or run the game in Directx 9 mode here. To Bioshock in Directx 9 mode, On Windows Vista you can right click on the icon in the Games explorer and choose Play-Dirext9. On Windows XP, and probably Vista as well, create a shortcut and add -dx9 after the exe name.
Problem : Bioshock crashes in the middle of the game, sometimes with a Blue Screen of Death.
Solution #1 : Disable High Detail Shaders in the Graphics Options
Solution #2: Re-Install the latest DirectX 10 and the latest ATI / NVIDIA Drivers (whatever you are currently using) .
Problem : Bioshock wont start. I get stuck at the Bioshock logo or after it.
Solution : this is an audio device initialization problem so you need to twink the audio settings in bioshock’s default.ini
Edit your default.ini. Put a semi-colon in front of AudioDevice=FMODAudio.FMODAudioSubsystem, and add the following line right after it:
AudioDevice=D3DDrv.D3DAudioDevice
After edits, that part of the config file should look like this:
;AudioDevice=FMODAudio.FMODAudioSubsystem
AudioDevice=D3DDrv.D3DAudioDevice
Problem : Bioshock sound stuttering / audio stutters.
Solution : this is an audio device initialization problem so you need to twink the audio settings in bioshock’s default.ini
Edit your default.ini. Put a semi-colon in front of AudioDevice=FMODAudio.FMODAudioSubsystem, and add the following line right after it:
AudioDevice=D3DDrv.D3DAudioDevice
After edits, that part of the config file should look like this:
;AudioDevice=FMODAudio.FMODAudioSubsystem
AudioDevice=D3DDrv.D3DAudioDevice
Problem : Nvidia series 6 and 7 can’t run Bioshock well.
Solution : once in the release folder, open “default” in notepad and scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen. Change the script line “HighDetailShaders=True” to “HighDetailShaders=False”. Do this because the Shadow creater drivers in the game do not work well with series 6 or 7 Nvidia cards EVEN IF you update all your card drivers.
If you do this “fix” it should fix all the crashes in-game and load crashes due to the fact that the Level3 shaders are on by default. Also, the game will not look near as nice as it should, however it IS stable and the framerates are quite good for me. It’s a band-aid fix, I know, until 2K Games hopefully releases it’s patch. I hope this helps most people still having trouble.
Problem : Instant crash when running Bioshock.exe on windows XP AFTER the game working fine for some time( So you have saved games etc)
Solution : Manually delete (or move) the WHOLE “bioshock” folder in “my documents” on windows XP (this is your saved games folder etc).
Now run Bioshock.exe. The game should run.
You will lose your progress but you can play again from the start.
Problem : After clicking the icon, or launching from the DVD autoplay menu, there’s a little BioShock splash screen for a while, and then nothing. Still at the desktop, no extra processes running, nothing happens even if you leave it for half an hour. Also tried rebooting, and with and without the beta Radeon drivers. I’ve played the Bioshock demo before and it worked well, but the retail Bioshock wont work well.
Solution : ” Tom Francis ” – I’ve got it working. The solution: uninstall the game, then uninstall the demo, then delete all registry entries, then reinstall the game without the demo. I tried this last because I didn’t want to use up one of my limited reinstalls, but it didn’t seem to need to activate a second time.
Problem : No Sound with Realtek Onboard Audio, new drivers available.
Solution : cj31016 – “Realtek released version 1.74 drivers today. Although I think it’s dated the 22nd or something in the device manager. Anyway after upgrading to these new drivers, I tinkered around more with the game settings and FINALLY with EAX turned off, Reverb turned on, running in Stereo sound (although I have a 7.1 setup), and in XP compatability mode…..THE GAME WORKED!!! YES!!! I won’t complain about the widescreen issue since I can at least play. Just wanted to share my story with others having similar issues. You may wanna give that a shot. I got the realtek drivers from their site…. http://www.realtek.com.tw”
Problem : XBox360 version of Bioshock game pauses every 10-15 seconds.
Solution : This seems to be a problem with the hard drive caching system on in the XBox 360 system software, and we are working with Microsoft to identify a solution for this issue. We have confirmed that the hitching goes away if you clear the hard drive cache.
To clear the hard drive cache, you must hold down both the RB and LB gamepad buttons while the game is starting. This must be done IMMEDIATELY after the console is rebooted (or the game is launched from the dashboard) and the buttons must only be released AFTER the red 2K Games logo appears.
NOTE: do not attempt to clear the hard drive cache by holding the “A” button during loading. While that works for Oblivion, Bioshock uses different button combination to clear the cache, and holding “A” will not work.
Problem : AVG Reports Bioshock.exe is a Obvustat.JXR virus infected file.
Solution : Warning: If you are not comfortable with uninstalling/replacing/disabling features of your virus checker, you may choose to wait until AVG release an update to their virus definition files rather than following the steps in this post.
Possible/Workaround Solution #1 : Disable the Resident Shield feature of AVG, you will still need to restore the bioshock.exe from the virus vault as in Possible Solution #2 as well, if Bioshock.exe has already been picked up as a virus.
Possible/Workaround Solution #2 :This problem appears to be caused by a false positive reported by AVG, the reported solution involves uninstalling your AVG virus scanner and using another, in the case below Avast (http://www.avast.com/).
Restore the bioshock.exe from the AVG virus Vault as follows:
- Go to the AVG control panel
- Select the Virus Vault
- Click the open button.
- Right click on the file you want copy back (bioshock, exe)
- Select restore file.
Uninstall the AVG Virus Checker and replace it with the equivalent free Avast virus scanner.
If you cannot restore the bioshock.exe from the virus vault, uninstall AVG, install Avast, then re-install Bioshock. This has been reported as not using up one of your activations.
